“ | If you don't honor your contract, Gabriel, I will make your dream disappear... just like you tried to do with mine! Don't ever forget again that you owe me everything! | ” |
—Tomoe Tsurugi, "Perfection" |
Tomoe Tsurugi[5] (剣 巴 / Tsurugi Tomoe in Japanese order) is a major antagonist of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, serving as an unseen character of Season 2, a supporting character of Seasons 3 and 4, and one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Chloé Bourgeois and Lila Rossi/Cerise Bianca) of Season 5. She is also a cameo antagonist of Miraculous World: London - At the Edge of Time.
She is a world champion fencer and the mother of Kagami Tsurugi who formed an alliance with Gabriel Agreste.
In "Ikari Gozen", after Kagami disobeyed her by choosing to participate in the Friendship Day games, Hawk Moth akumatized Tomoe into Ikari Gozen, a giant centaur samurai supervillain in order to punish her daughter.[6]
In "Multiplication", it is revealed that Tomoe is the CEO of her own tech company called the Tsurugi Industries and that she was aware of Gabriel's secret identity as Monarch, and was a willing ally to him. They developed technological rings called Alliance rings that would allow the latter to give the Miraculous superpowers to his akumatized villains without the need to give them the Miraculous themselves. To test the Alliance rings, she let herself be reakumatized into Ikari Gozen, while holding one Alliance ring, she received the Mouse Miraculous superpower to multiply herself and become Ikari Dozen. After the success of the experiment, Tomoe and Gabriel give public access to the Alliance rings. She also received a Magical Charm from Ladybug to prevent her from being reakumatized.
In "Pretension", after Argos kidnapped Kagami, Tomoe put on five Alliances and asked Gabriel to reakumatize her so she could recover her daughter, seeing that also as a chance to retrieve the Peacock Miraculous. She was akumatized into Matagi Gozen, a new version of her previous akumatized form Ikari Gozen, receiving the superpowers of the Bee Miraculous, Rooster Miraculous, Mouse Miraculous, Horse Miraculous and Tiger Miraculouses through her Alliance rings. She also received a new Magical Charm after her first one got destroyed.
In "Re-creation", with Gabriel's sacrifice, Tomoe took over the Agreste brand in honor of "continuing his legacy", after Ladybug exonerated her by lying to the public she and Gabriel were forced by Monarch to create the Alliance rings, both for Adrien and Kagami's sake.
Appearance[]
Physical appearance[]
Tomoe is a slender Japanese middle-aged pale-skinned woman of average height with long black hair with dark blue that is arranged in Chignon style.
Civilian attire[]
Tomoe wears a red barrette on her hair, a white long-sleeved shirt with a Cheongsam collar and the Tsurugi family crest on her upper sleeves and on the back below the neck, a back band around her waist, flowing deep festive red culottes pants, black sunglasses, and black high heeled dress shoes. She uses a shinai as a support cane for her blindness.
As Ikari Gozen[]
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe had an appearance reminiscent of a classical Greek centaur as her lower body resembled a horse, complete with four legs and four hooves. Unlike the other centaurs, she didn't have a tail. As a living suit of hollow samurai armor, her skin was the same metallic red as the rest of her body with light brilliant amber eyes with almost invisible yellowish white pupils, partially covered with a helmet reminiscent of the one that Riposte beared; albeit with a large horn that looked like Oni-Chan's rather than a winged emblem and bearing the Tsurugi family crest on her chest.
Because the Tsurugi's car was transformed along with Tomoe in the akumatization, she appeared to be very mechanical and vehicular, especially in the lower half of her body. Its appearance evoked a high end car, inspired by a Tesla Model S, with tires at the joints, headlights at the front hips, and exhaust ports throughout. Ikari Gozen wielded her akumatized bokken in her right hand. She also had the ability to see as she was able to locate her daughter repeatedly and recognize her as the hero Ryuko.
As Matagi Gozen[]
Tomoe's appearance stayed the same, but she was armed with a bow and arrow along with her sword and rode a red and black dog/horse with yellow eyes just like her.
Personality[]
Tomoe seems to be a very strict and kept woman who is very aware of her environment. She can be wise and informative towards others as well, advising the less open-minded Gabriel Agreste to not give into fear in "Backwarder".
When she mentions Gabriel being more blind than she is, Tomoe doesn't always believe in friendship as she believes forging bonds with another can end sour or disappointing, but she was willing to change her ways in letting her daughter make a new friend. Despite being a stringent parent towards Kagami, she refuses to allow her daughter to be harmed, especially through her silver family ring, as seen in "Perfection".
But as of her actions in "Multiplication", she has proven herself to be as blind as Gabriel and just like him, she has put her daughter in a situation that she never should've been in.
Tomoe has a pretentious and sanctimonious attitude about Kagami being under her control, saying she has the ideal behavior and is too perfect for her to control. Tomoe holds Kagami up to high standards; she pressures her daughter into not only being perfect but to suppress her emotions and will chastises Kagami for allowing her feelings to control her. She doesn't take it lightly when Gabriel tells her she doesn't have her daughter under her control, despite her self-righteous belief. Tomoe is willing to force Kagami into obedience and even wanted Gabriel akumatize her when Kagami escaped from London in "Representation".
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe became much more violent and ten times more strict and furious as she regularly performed large sword strokes without care for collateral damage and knocking aside several cars. Her aggression was so that she showed no hesitation to anything, even combating her own daughter, attempting to stomp her several times under her hooves. She believed she was well within her rights as a mother to act out and punish her child as she deemed fit for disobeying her. She was also rather confident and prideful, declaring herself "as elusive as the wind, as powerful as the flood, as swift as lightning".
In "Multiplication", her akumatization this time was voluntary but she still remained with her altered personality so as not to bring suspicion to her enemies. Her personal goal along with Monarch's was to test the Alliances rings but from the heroes' point of view, she had an opposite goal from Bakerix which was to destroy everything that was considered old.
As Matagi Gozen, due to being voluntarily akumatized, her personality remained the same as her civilian form and her personality as Ikari Gozen. She also had multiple objectives, which were to take the Ladybug, Cat and Peacock Miraculous from their respective owners, take revenge on Argos for kidnapping her daughter and also recover her at all costs, even needing to hurt her with the Venom shots.
Abilities[]
As a civilian[]
Tomoe is a very skilled champion in fencing and kendo, surpassing her prodigious daughter's prowess. She has heightened senses and is able to sense the mood of those near her even though she is blind. Although blind, Tomoe easily navigates her environment with the help of her other senses, gadgets such as a smart phone, her bokken as a cane and the assistance of her Tesla-inspired self-driving car named Tatsu. As the CEO of her own technology company, she is well-versed at running and leading a business, doing partnerships, and creating a wide range of electronical products.
As Ikari Gozen[]
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe had a gigantic size. With this strength, she was able to knock aside large heavy objects like cars with ease and create large heavy stomps with her hooves, all while still being rather nimble and dexterous, able to gallop like a horse or donkey, leap large distances and wield her sword with one hand. On her akumatized form, it would also appear that she was able to see well.
Using her strength and size, Ikari Gozen was able to easily able to grab ordinarily sized people like Kagami and Cat Noir in order to gulp them down whole and trap them inside her stomach. The cage inside her stomach still heavily resembled the car it was made from, complete with seats and seat belts that she could freely manipulate, as shown when she was able to restrict Cat Noir's hand when he was about to use Cataclysm.
In "Multiplication", she received the power of the Mouse Miraculous, Multitude, through her Alliance ring.
As Matagi Gozen[]
As Matagi Gozen, Tomoe retained the same abilities as Ikari Gozen except that she got the powers of Sublimation, Venom, Multitude, Voyage, and Clout, thus making her more powerful. She could also scale up walls as she ran up the side of the Eiffel Tower.
Relationships[]
Kagami Tsurugi/Ryuko[]
As Kagami is her daughter, Tomoe is very strict with her and teaches her how to be a fencer; holding her to great expectations and is currently training her to be her perfect successor in the family's traditions. She puts her daughter to attack her to see how she practices despite her having empathy and a fear of hurting her mother. In "Oni-Chan", she doesn't want Kagami to be distracted during the lessons, reminding her that no cell phones were allowed during practice. She also teaches her Japanese history about female warriors like Tomoe Gozen during a period that females were rejected and tries to encourage her with that. Despite her strict parenting with her, she cares deeply for her and asking where she is.
As Kagami turned into Ryuko with the Dragon Miraculous, she doesn't realize that she was actually her daughter since her memory got wiped out since she was deakumatized.
In "Ikari Gozen", during practice, Tomoe got upset that Kagami signed up to take part in the Friendship Games without her permission. Later during the episode, Tomoe got angry at her for disobeying her and that she outsmarted and controlled the automatic car's A.I, as her daughter was late and was supposed to be home. She calls Kagami angrily to ask where is she, where Marinette overtakes the call, which makes her more angry and decided to ground Kagami. Later she gets akumatized which she stomps and locates them, then she gulps Kagami and puts her in the car seat inside her. After she was deakumatized, Tomoe understands her daughter's desire to make friends but warns her friendships are not what they seem to be. Sensing her daughter's frustrations, Tomoe starts to soften her strict demeanor towards her and allows Kagami to hang out with Marinette.
As Kagami being Ryuko, she is aware that she is actually Kagami and starts to attack her aggressively, which leads to Cat Noir to be captured, when Kagami wants to be gulped inside with Cat Noir as part of the plan she comments that she finally has some sense into her.
In "Lies", she's seen fencing with Kagami and is going through a lesson of not being taken by surprise and talk about Adrien. She admits to being annoyed with the constant scheduling changes with the Agreste family, unbeknownst to her that it was just a lie, so that Kagami and Adrien could have more time to see each other. Tomoe is now seen at a birthday party for Prince Ali with her daughter before she was akumatized.
In "Protection", it's revealed that Tomoe wanted her daughter to get together with Adrien to be married in the future, and was shocked when learning that her daughter broke up with Adrien and that he was now dating Marinette, to which she allowed Gabriel to akumatize her daughter to separate them, only to fail, due to Ladybug and Cat Noir's intervention. Sensing her daughter's lingering romantic feelings for Adrien again, she attempted to pressure Kagami to disregard Marinette and take Adrien for herself again. It is later revealed in "Re-creation" that she also wanted her and Adrien to be the new world's eternal icons, thus immortalizing the Tsurugi name for all eternity.
In "Pretension", when Kagami tried to convince her mother to stop seeing her and Adrien as a couple, Tomoe became angry at her and criticized her by letting her emotions control her, which got Argos (who was following and eavesdropping on them) angry and took Kagami away to free her from her mother.
This action led Tomoe to ask Gabriel to akumatize her and with the Miraculous powers she chased Kagami and Argos relentlessl intending to save her daughter and to get the Peacock Miraculous,y, and when Matagi Gozen finally found her daughter in an alley, telling her that she only wanted to protect her and yet has no hesitation in trying to paralyze Kagami with Venom, shocking her daughter, who flees with Argos willingly, and after getting deakumatized with Kagami's help, she tells her daughter that she isn't worthy to carry their family's crest ring and asks it back from Kagami, who reluctantly returns it to her, however Tomoe was unaware that Félix secretly took Kagami's ring and switched it with a fake one, and later secretly returned her real ring to her daughter.
In "Revelation", as part of her plan, Tomoe allows Gabriel to replace Lila with Kagami as the female AI of the Alliance rings and introduce their children as a couple.
In "Representation", Tomoe sends Kagami to London and with her holographic avatars presented her and Adrien as a couple in the news, regardless of Kagami's dismay. However Tomoe soon becomes furious when Kagami escapes from London with Argos and asks Gabriel to akumatize her again to find her daughter and Adrien, but he decides to akumatize himself instead. When Kagami is returned to her hotel room at sunrise by Argos, Tomoe immediately and without hesitation locks down her daughter in a solitary confinement room to prevent another escape and to keep her safe from "Operation: Perfect Alliance".
Unknown to Tomoe, Kagami likely pieced, knowing of their transactions, that her mother was in league with Monarch; helping him terrorize the city as they both were responsible for creating the Alliance rings that gave akumatized victims their powers after upon learning that Gabriel Agreste is Monarch from Felix in "Representation". It is unknown what is currently of their relationship in "Re-creation", due to Gabriel's sacrifice and her mother's announcement in taking over his brand "in honor of continuing his legacy".
In "Miraculous London", Tomoe's involvement is discovered by Bug Noire, but is let go, due to Bug Noire not wanting to make Kagami suffer without her only parent and she could reveal the truth about Gabriel, which would devastate Adrien. Kagami believed everyone is able to change and offered to talk to her about being his ally. When returning to Paris, Tomoe does not say a word to her daughter and the two walk to her car.
Gabriel Agreste/Monarch[]
Tomoe had a professional relationship with Gabriel. Her brand and his often worked together, which was shown in “Animaestro” when the two signed business documents together. However, they did also appear to be friends. In “Backwarder”, she noticed that Gabriel seemed uneasy on the Startrain and gave him some advice. Tomoe has also expressed a belief that Gabriel has many admirable qualities, although she believes that he isn’t strict enough with his son as Adrien is allowed to participate in the Friendship Games in "Ikari Gozen". In "Protection" and "Pretension", Tomoe told Gabriel to get Adrien under his control. In "Representation", she said she's not surprised that Adrien disobeyed him, indicting to her that Gabriel still did not have his son under control.
Despite not totally understood the reason for it, Tomoe was well aware of Gabriel's identity as Monarch and helped him with his plans to take the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, even developed a device that would allow the villain to transfer the Miraculous superpowers to his akumatized villains and let herself be the test subject to test it.
In "Perfection", after Kagami was deakumatized, Tomoe became furious at Gabriel for akumatizing her directly through her silver family ring and attacked on his injured arm with her bokken, stating he endangered her daughter. She warned Gabriel that if he put her daughter in danger like that again and doesn't honor their contract, she would make his dream disappear like how he tried to do with hers and that he owed her everything.
It's also revealed later on in season 5, starting from "Protection" to "Re-creation", as part of their deal, Tomoe wants Kagami to end up with Adrien for the two of them to carry on their legacies and to be the new world's eternal icons. After Gabriel's death, s he announced that she will be the new owner of Gabriel's brand "in honor of continuing his legacy".
In "Miraculous London", Tomoe's involvement as Monarch's accomplice is revealed to Bug Noire by Nathalie, but is let go, due to Bug Noire not wanting to make Kagami suffer without her only parent and she could reveal the truth about Gabriel, which would devastate Adrien and instead told the public that Tomoe was forced to work for Monarch by creating the Alliance rings. Kagami believed everyone is able to change and offered to talk to her about being his ally.
Félix Fathom/Argos[]
They first interact in "Emotion", where Félix (impersonating Adrien) greeted her formally and told her he would be honored to have Kagami as his queen on the Diamond Dance.
However, at the dance, Félix revealed himself to everyone, transformed into Argos and used his sentimonster Red Moon to snap Tomoe out from existence to free Kagami from her, as he disliked her being controlled, much to Kagami's horror, but at the insistence of her, Argos restored Tomoe alongside everyone in Paris.
Since that incident, Tomoe came to dislike Félix, seeing him as a obstacle to her goal to have Adrien and Kagami back together.
However, in "Pretension", Argos returned to Paris and kidnapped Kagami to protect her from Tomoe criticizing and controlling her, and Tomoe asked Gabriel to akumatize her to retrieve Kagami and the Peacock Miraculous and with the power of super smell she soon she tracks Félix both in his civilian and transformed self and tells Kagami she would protect from him, while calling him "a good for nothing". However, Kagami flees with him willingly after she tried to attack her and Ikari Gozen becomes enraged when Félix managed to outsmart her supersmell power and tried to attack him, only to be stopped by Ladybug and Cat Noir, which allowed Félix to escape with the Peacock Miraculous.
However, she's unaware that Félix developed romantic feelings for her daughter and that he secretly gave her real family ring back to help her to get her freedom.
In "Representation", Argos reunited with Kagami and fled with her to Paris, much to Tomoe's anger, and unknown to her, they revealed Gabriel's secret identity to Marinette (which they know she's Ladybug) to defeat her and Gabriel.
Adrien Agreste/Cat Noir[]
Not much is known about Tomoe's relationship with Adrien, but in "Animaestro" after Adrien personally greets the Tsurugis, Tomoe praises him and approves Kagami's friendship with him. In "Ikari Gozen", she didn't like how Adrien was allowed to patriciate in the Friendship Day Games. In "Representation", Tomoe replied to not being surprised that Adrien disobeyed him. It's also reveled later on in Season 5, starting from "Protection" to "Re-creation", Tomoe wants Kagami to end up with Adrien for the two of them to carry on the family legacies and to be the new world order's eternal icons.
In season 5, Tomoe despises Cat Noir and sees him as a glitch in her and Gabriel's plans to take his and Ladybug's Miraculouses.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug[]
Not much is known about Tomoe's relationship with Marinette, but in "Ikari Gozen", after finding out Kagami disobeyed her, Marinette tries her best to calm her down and not for her to punish Kagami. After she is deakumatized, Tomoe allows Kagami to remain friends with her. Despite this, she doesn't actually care that much for her personally. In "Mr. Pigeon 72", Tomoe refers Marinette as Kagami's very unique friend in a dry manner. In season 5, she starts to see Marinette as an hurdle for Kagami and Adrien to be together again.
Later on in in season 5 like Cat Noir, Tomoe despises her superhero alter ego for being a block in her and Gabriel's plans to take their Miraculouses.
Chloé Bourgeois[]
In "Collusion", after André Bourgeois refused to sign the police robots, Chloé came in angrily at Cerise's request demanding her father to arrest Caline Bustier and have her classmates repeat the school year and not go to any high school. Later in "Revolution" She and Gabriel were proud of her for banning Team Miraculous's leaders their members and Monarch. Later at the Lourve, she and Gabriel were planning to betray Queen Mayor but the Resistance and Parisians fought back. Audrey ran away from the mob while Tomoe and Gabe ran away and went into hiding, abandoning and betrayed her to be dealt with by André who grounded her and sent her away to London, UK to save themselves.
André Bourgeois[]
Tomoe and André were on good terms with each other as they are of the same social group and attended the same gatherings. However, during a meeting in "Collusion", she and Gabriel tried to convince the mayor to replace his police officers with her police robots. When he refuses, Tomoe calls him a fool for wasting hers and Gabriel's time.
Lila Rossi/Cerise Bianca[]
Not much is revealed on Tomoe's relationship with Lila, currently known as Cerise Bianca. She became the female face of the Alliance rings in "Multiplication" and presumably allowed Kagami to have her as a friend. Despite this, she didn't actually care that much for her personally. In "Emotion", when Lila was surprised that she wasn't invited to the Diamonds' Dance, Kagami compared Lila as a stone instead of a precious one, implying that's how Tomoe actually sees Lila. In "Revelation", she allowed Gabriel to replace Lila with her daughter and introduce Kagami and Adrien as a couple. Unknown to Tomoe, Lila as Hoaxer discovered Tomoe's contracts with Gabriel among his other secrets, as part of her revenge. In "Collusion", Lila/Cerise seemed fixated on Tomoe's laptop, which was picked up by her in "Revolution", and used it to infiltrate the Agreste mansion in "Re-creation".
Nathalie Sancoeur[]
Tomoe and Nathalie have presumably known each other before the start of the series, due to their association with Gabriel. They were often seen at social gatherings together and had signed business contracts with him with Nathalie as a witness. They had helped Gabriel in his goal to obtain the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculouses before Nathalie refused to help him anymore because of his obsession with power.
And in "Pretension", Tomoe becomes aware of Nathalie having little time left and Gabriel wanting to use the Miraculouses to save her as well, but Tomoe cared more about him honoring his contract with her.
Unknown to Tomoe, Nathalie was against her and Gabriel wanting to force Adrien to get back with Kagami, stating he has the right of dating whoever he wanted.
In "Re-creation", she likely realizes Gabriel used the wish to heal Nathalie at the cost of his life.
In "Miraculous London", Nathalie revealed to Bug Noire the truth about Tomoe being Monarch's accomplice the whole time and where she and Gabriel imprisoned their children in London, allowing the heroine to release them but at Bug Noire's request, Nathalie refrained from revealing the truth about Tomoe to the public for Adrien's sake.
