—Tomoe Tsurugi, "Sublimation" | ||
Tomoe Tsurugi[7] (剣 ともえ / Tsurugi Tomoe in Japanese order) is a major antagonist in Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, serving as an unseen character in Season 2, a minor character in Seasons 3 and 4, one of the three secondary antagonists (alongside Chloé Bourgeois and Lila Rossi/Cerise Bianca) of Season 5, and the secondary antagonist of Season 6. She is also a cameo antagonist in Miraculous World: London - At the Edge of Time.
She is a world champion fencer, CEO of Tsurugi Industries and the mother of Kagami Tsurugi who formed an alliance with Gabriel Agreste. She is also secretly a member of The Kingdom, a secret evil organization that is searching for the Ladybug and the Cat Miraculouses. Within the council, she is known as The Machine.
In "Ikari Gozen", after Kagami disobeyed her by choosing to participate in the Friendship Day games, Hawk Moth akumatized Tomoe into Ikari Gozen, a giant centaur samurai supervillain in order to punish her daughter.
In "Multiplication", it is revealed that Tomoe is the CEO of her own tech company called Tsurugi Industries (also known as the Tsurugi technologies) and that she was aware of Gabriel's secret identity as Monarch, and was a willing ally to him. They developed technological rings called Alliance rings that would allow the latter to give the Miraculous superpowers to his akumatized villains without the need to give them the Miraculous themselves. To test the Alliance rings, she let herself be reakumatized into Ikari Gozen, while holding one Alliance ring, she received the Mouse Miraculous superpower to multiply herself and become Ikari Dozen. After the success of the experiment, Tomoe and Gabriel give public access to the Alliance rings. She also received a Magical Charm from Ladybug to prevent her from being re-akumatized.
In "Pretension", after Argos kidnapped Kagami, Tomoe put on five Alliances and asked Gabriel to reakumatize her so she could recover her daughter, seeing that also as a chance to retrieve the Peacock Miraculous. She was akumatized into Matagi Gozen, a new version of her previous akumatized form Ikari Gozen, receiving the superpowers of the Bee Miraculous, Rooster Miraculous, Mouse Miraculous, Horse Miraculous and Tiger Miraculouses through her Alliance rings. She also received a new Magical Charm after her first one got destroyed.
In "Re-creation", with Gabriel's sacrifice, Tomoe took over the Agreste brand in honor of "continuing his legacy", after Ladybug exonerated her by lying to the public she and Gabriel were forced by Monarch to create the Alliance rings, both for Adrien and Kagami's sake.
In "El Toro De Piedra", Tomoe, using her alias The Machine, meets with the council and says she has no explanation provided about the final battle between Gabriel Agreste and Bug Noire. She proceeds to remind the council about the desired success for the Perfect World Project. She is entrusted with carrying on Gabriel Agreste's mission, with Nathalie Sancoeur as her shadow.
In "Yaksi Gozen", it's revealed that she had allied herself with Cerise before Monarch's defeat. After getting into a big argument with Kagami, Tomoe is convinced by Cerise to let herself akumatized by her into Yaksi Gozen, another new version of Ikari Gozen, as part of Chrysalis' plan to capture Félix and seize his ring to control him against Ladybug and Cat Noir. She is also revealed to have been the one to use the Peacock Miraculous to bring Kagami to life, with her lost sight being a consequence of the use of the damaged Miraculous.
Appearance[]
Physical Appearance[]
Tomoe is a slender Japanese middle-aged pale-skinned woman of average height with long black hair with dark blue that is arranged in Chignon style.
In "Yaksi Gozen", when removing her sunglasses, it is revealed Tomoe has cybernetic prosthetic eyes with dark blue pupils due to losing her eyesight after using the Peacock Miraculous.
Civilian Attire[]
Tomoe wears a red barrette on her hair, a white long-sleeved shirt with a Cheongsam collar and the Tsurugi family crest on her upper sleeves and on the back below the neck, a black band around her waist, flowing deep festive red culottes pants, black sunglasses, and black high heeled dress shoes. She uses a shinai as a support cane for her blindness.
As Ikari Gozen[]
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe had an appearance reminiscent of a classical Greek centaur as her lower body resembled a horse, complete with four legs and four hooves. Unlike the other centaurs, she didn't have a tail. As a living suit of hollow samurai armor, her skin was the same metallic red as the rest of her body with light brilliant amber eyes with almost invisible yellowish white pupils, partially covered with a helmet reminiscent of the one that Riposte beared; albeit with a large horn that looked like Oni-Chan's rather than a winged emblem and bearing the Tsurugi family crest on her chest.
Because the Tsurugi's car was transformed along with Tomoe in the akumatization, she appeared to be very mechanical and vehicular, especially in the lower half of her body. Its appearance evoked a high end car, inspired by a Tesla Model S, with tires at the joints, headlights at the front hips, and exhaust ports throughout. Ikari Gozen wielded her akumatized bokken in her right hand. She also had the ability to see as she was able to locate her daughter repeatedly and recognize her as the hero Ryuko.
As Matagi Gozen[]
Matagi Gozen had the same appearance as Ikari Gozen, but she was armed with a bow and arrow along with her sword and rode a red and black dog/horse with yellow eyes just like her. She also had two normal legs unlike her previous form.
As Yaksi Gozen[]
Yaksi Gozen's appearance served as an upgrade to her past forms as Ikari and Matagi Gozen respectively. While she had a similar look to her past forms, her armor was more intricate in structure, featuring minor alterations; she had black markings near the corners of her torso armor, she gained additionally large and open shoulder pauldrons with points, matching the more wide and open helmet, her emblem was upside down and pentagonal in shape, and her helmet horn turned black.
She had a more robotic face with darker, angular cheeks, matching the shape of her eyes. As shown in her resisting her akumatization, her tears were light brilliant amber. She also had a charcoal gray waist area featuring a mouth made of teeth-like fangs. She wielded her bokken as well.

Personality[]
Tomoe seems to be a very strict and kept woman who is very aware of her environment. She can be wise and informative towards others as well, advising the less open-minded Gabriel Agreste to not give into fear in "Backwarder". However, she is also quite cold and holds a great deal of cynnicism towards love and friendship, even seeing that as Gabriel's fatal flaw, as his own desperate obsession in bringing back his wife has been the root of many of their strives in reaching their objective, something she is not affraid of telling him, as seen in "Pretension".
In "Yaksi Gozen", it's revealed that Tomoe's cynicism towards love and friendship is the result of many disappointments she suffered in the past, especially with the opposite gender. That was the one thing that held her back in allying herself to Gabriel to defeat Ladybug and Cat Noir when he called for her help, only doing so at the prospect of regaining her sight back and her daughter getting a "prince charming" as perfect as she was.
As a mother, Tomoe is very strict and demanding with her daughter Kagami, always holding her to very high standards and pushing her to her limits in order to turn her into a strong and disciplined person. Both to protect Kagami from disappointment and due to her past grievances, Tomoe was very controlling towards her daughter's friendships, only allowing her to be friends to those she approved of. To prevent Kagami from seeking friendships, she would always tell her forming bonds with another can end sour or disappointing. However, after noticing Kagami's determination in seeking friendships, she allowed her to do so, possibly expecting she would learn this way how disappointing friendships could be, allowing her daughter to be friends with Marinette to this end.
Tomoe has a pretentious and sanctimonious attitude about Kagami being under her control, saying she has the ideal behavior and is too perfect for her to control. This comes from the way Tomoe educated Kagami, passing the latter's entire life to teach her respect and discipline in a way that would cause her daughter to obey her without the need of using her amok to do so. She would also pressure Kagami into not only being perfect but to suppress her emotions, chastising her for allowing even a inch of emotion to come from her. She doesn't take it lightly when Gabriel tells her she doesn't have her daughter under her control, but, despite her self-righteous belief, Tomoe is willing to force Kagami into obedience and even wanted Gabriel akumatize her when Kagami escaped from London in "Representation". However, thanks to Félix, who switched Kagami's amokized ring for a fake one, that was prevented.
In "Yaksi Gozen", Tomoe's desire to control her daughter's life again drove her to try to regain the latter's ring by force after knowing she would meet with Félix, the one that disrupted the hold she had on Kagami's life, which resulted in a tempestous argument with her that forced the latter to use her powers as Ryuko to defend herself. That also motivated her to accept Cerise/Chrysalis' proposal for a plan that would both give her back some of the control she once had over Kagami, but would also allow her to spy on the Miraculers, targeting Félix instead.
Despite being a stringent parent towards Kagami, Tomoe is showed to care for her daughter, even if on her own way. This is seen how she refuses to allow her daughter to be harmed, especially through her silver family ring, as seen in "Perfection", when Gabriel sent a megakuma to Kagami's ring, putting her in danger of being destroyed if Ladybug had come to break the akumatized ring and free the amok before it could be repaired with her powers.
Tomoe also doesn't want Kagami to go through the same pain she endured, as the all point of her helping Gabriel in his quest to have Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculouses (besides regaining her sight) was for her daughter to be paired up with someone that was as perfect as her, but also easy to control, with Adrien being the ideal choice. However there was a flaw just like Chloe, Tomoe was so wrapped up in the past that she didn't or not wanted to see the differences between her and Kagami.
Where she failed to realize had she gone through with the plan, Tomoe would be acting no different than Gabriel in the case of "pulling the strings". By using Félix like that, she'd be making things dangerous for her daughter thereby her friends just to make a point, Tomoe would only be proving that she is dangerous not what she said extending to Tomoe that she also lost her daughter's forgiveness.
Tomoe is also showed possessing a great deal of disgust and hatred towards the Peacock Miraculous itself, due to the fact she had to give up on her eyes in order to create Kagami with its magic. This hatred towards the jewel is so much that she initially refused to help Gabriel fix it in order for Nathalie to help him as Mayura without any danger (even with him suggesting to use the wish to restore Tomoe's eyes), only accepting after realizing she could use this to ensure her daughter would be paired up with a "prince charming" worthy of her that could also be controled. The hatred towards the Peacock Miraculous is also extended to their holders, as they have the power to undo any sentimonster.
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe became much more violent and ten times more strict and furious as she regularly performed large sword strokes without care for collateral damage and knocking aside several cars. Her aggression was so that she showed no hesitation to anything, even combating her own daughter, attempting to stomp her several times under her hooves. She believed she was well within her rights as a mother to act out and punish her child as she deemed fit for disobeying her. She was also rather confident and prideful, declaring herself "as elusive as the wind, as powerful as the flood, as swift as lightning".
In "Multiplication", her akumatization this time was voluntary but she still remained with her altered personality so as not to bring suspicion to her enemies. Her personal goal along with Monarch's was to test the Alliances rings but from the heroes' point of view, she had an opposite goal from Bakerix which was to destroy everything that was considered old.
As Matagi Gozen, due to being voluntarily akumatized, her personality remained the same as her civilian form and her personality as Ikari Gozen. She also had multiple objectives, which were to take the Ladybug, Cat and Peacock Miraculous from their respective owners, take revenge on Argos for kidnapping her daughter and also recover her at all costs, even needing to hurt her with the Venom shots.
As Yaksi Gozen, she lets herself be perceived as wanting to keep Félix away from Kagami, even extending that to Adrien, despite the fact he only sees the latter as a friend. However, that is nothing but a façade to hide the true plan of getting control over Félix through his amokized ring and use him to spy on the Miraculers, all while earn Kagami's forgiveness after pretending to finally understand her feelings and fight off and reject the ultrakuma. Despite the main objective to seize control over Félix failed, she managed to salvage the last part of plan.
Abilities[]
As a Civilian[]
Tomoe is a very skilled champion in fencing and kendo, surpassing her prodigious daughter's prowess. She has heightened senses and is able to sense the mood of those near her even though she is blind. Although blind, Tomoe easily navigates her environment with the help of her other senses, gadgets such as a smart phone, her bokken as a cane and the assistance of her Tesla-inspired self-driving car named Tatsu. As the CEO of her own technology company, she is well-versed at running and leading a business, doing partnerships, and creating a wide range of electronical products.
As Ikari Gozen[]
As Ikari Gozen, Tomoe possessed a gigantic size and immense strength. She was capable of easily knocking aside heavy objects, such as cars, and creating large stomping vibrations with her hooves. Despite her size, she remained nimble and dexterous, able to gallop like a horse or donkey, leap great distances, and wield her sword with one hand. In her akumatized form, she also demonstrated sharp vision.
Using her strength and size, Ikari Gozen could easily grab ordinary-sized individuals like Kagami and Cat Noir, swallowing them whole and trapping them inside her stomach. The interior of her stomach resembled the inside of a car, complete with seats and seat belts that she could manipulate at will. For instance, she was able to restrict Cat Noir’s hand when he was about to use his Cataclysm power.
In "Multiplication," she gained the power of the Mouse Miraculous, known as Multitude, through her Alliance ring.
As Matagi Gozen[]
As Matagi Gozen, Tomoe retained the same abilities as Ikari Gozen except that she got the powers of Sublimation, Venom, Multitude, Voyage, and Clout, thus making her more powerful. She could also scale up walls as she ran up the side of the Eiffel Tower.
As Yaksi Gozen[]
Yaksi Gozen, like her Ikari Gozen and Matagi Gozen forms, is characterized by her gigantic size and immense strength. She wields a Bokken, a wooden sword with which she can effortlessly cut through thick objects, such as cars and the walls of houses. Yaksi Gozen has the ability to shoot a yellow beam from her mouth that freezes her targets, allowing her to then open her stomach and imprison them inside. Inside, she has a cage that resembles a dark room. Similar to Venom, those affected by her beam become unable to see, hear, speak, or think, as was the case with Félix, who couldn't perceive Chrysalis even though she was standing right in front of him.
As a Peacock Miraculous holder[]
The Peacock Miraculous granted her enhanced physical abilities, a hand fan as her tool, and Amokization as her superpower, allowing her to manifest emotions of herself or others into physical form to create sentimonsters. After amokizing her ring to create her daughter, the use of the damaged Miraculous caused her eyes to start to deteriorate, eventually, causing her the need to remove them and replace them with mechanical prostetics in hopes of regaining some of her vision.

- Matagi Gozen is an altercation of Tomoe’s first akumatized villain name. The Matagi (マタギ) are traditional winter hunters of northern Japan, explaining why Matagi Gozen wields a bow. Northern Japan is also famously known for their Akita dogs, which is Matagi Gozen’s steed’s face design is based off of.
- Yaksi Gozen's name comes from the Yaksha, nature spirits in Buddhist mythology.[8]
Trivia[]
- It is revealed by Feri González that Tomoe is indeed blind as she is shown using a kendo sword as a walking stick and black sunglasses.[9]
- This is due to her having sustained eye damage from using the Peacock Miraculous.|But, in the episode Yaksi Gozen it is revealed that she is not actually blind, but uses bionic eyes to be able to see.}}
- However, when she was akumatized into Ikari Gozen, being akumatized fixed Tomoe's eyesight, returning her ability to see. However, her blindness returned when she was deakumatized.
- Despite losing her sight due to the use of the Peacock Miraculous, Tomoe had replaced her eyes with prostetics that appear to give her some form of limited vision.
- It is revealed that Kagami Tsurugi has a grandfather, but it is unknown if he is Tomoe's father or father-in-law.
- It is also unknown whether she raised Kagami alone.
- The episode "Yaksi Gozen" reveals that Tomoe has had many disappointments from the men in her life, suggesting that she indeed had Kagami by herself or that the one that would be the latter's father abandoned them.
- Tomoe is the first akumatized villain to be given by Monarch access to a Miraculous superpower through the Alliance rings.
- Tomoe is the third person shown to know of Gabriel's supervillain identity, following Nathalie Sancoeur and Félix Fathom.
- Tomoe is the fifth person to voluntarily get akumatized following Gabriel Agreste, Nathalie Sancoeur, Lila Rossi and Chloé Bourgeois.
- Since it was revealed in "Multiplication" that Tomoe knows who Monarch is, she was already aware of his secret identity in "Ikari Gozen" and gotten herself voluntarily akumatized in that episode. It was shown in "Animaestro" that Gabriel and Tomoe had been working on "Operation: Perfect Alliance" for quite some time, which supports the previous statement.
- If so, Tomoe might also retain her memory of Kagami's secret identity as Ryuko and pretended not to remember after being deakumatized, or Gabriel told her.
- Gabriel might have told Tomoe the secret identities of Rena Rouge, Carapace, King Monkey, Pegasus, Bunnyx and Viperion, following the events of the Season 5 premiere, "Evolution".
- In "Perfection", it is revealed that Gabriel tried to take away Tomoe's dream in the past, causing him to be in debt to her.
- Considering the fact Tomoe lost her sight after using the Peacock Miraculous, maybe she blames Gabriel for that, possibly either due to him being the reason why it was damaged or for not warning her about the dangers of using it.
- Matagi Gozen is the second akumatized villain to receive multiple Miraculous powers through the Alliance rings, following Kiku, not counting Safari, who was able to get other powers with the help of Genesis.
- Tomoe's role as Gabriel's accomplice to steal the Miraculouses could be foreshadowed in the episode "Feast" where after the restoration of the Order of the Guardians' temple, Tomoe is seen among the people listening closely to the news announcement.
- In "Yaksi Gozen", it's revealed she used the Peacock Miraculous to give life to Kagami, the same way Émilie and Colt did to create Adrien and Félix respectivelly.
- However, unlike them, she managed to survive, as the emotion she used to create Kagami caused her eyes to be affected by the backlash, unlike the other two who most likely had vital organs affected. When they started to deteriorate, Tomoe had them removed to avoid any complications.
