The Resistance is a clandestine group formed by Gabriel Agreste with the purpose of opposing the dictatorial rule of the Supreme over the world. It exists in the Re-Verse, an alternative reality to the Quantic Universe.
History[]
At some point in the past, an evil being known as the Supreme came into possession of the Mother Box and used its Miraculous to become the ruler of the world. He kept the existence of the magical jewels a secret from the general public, and established a regime in which any form of mutual aid is considered a crime (so as to prevent rebellions). However, sometimes he entrusts Miraculous to a few select people of the world whom he considers powerful. Gabriel Agreste, a successful and world-famous fashion designer, was once one of the Supreme's allies, but in order to obtain something he wanted more than anything, he stole the Miraculous of the Butterfly and the Peacock from the Supreme. He then entrusted the Peacock Miraculous to his wife, Emilie Agreste.
However, Gabriel and Emilie misused the Miraculous, which somehow resulted in Emilie's death. Realizing the wrong in their actions and wishing to redeem himself, Gabriel used the Miraculous of the Butterfly and became the superhero Betterfly, with the goal of freeing the world from the tyranny of the Supreme by showing people that if they work together, they can revolt, that a better world than theirs is possible. Later, at some point, a couple of teenagers, Alya Césaire and Nino Lahiffe, along with an AI called Maxkov, joined Betterfly to support his cause, and so the Resistance was born.
Meanwhile, in order to retrieve the Miraculous he had lost, The Supreme recruited two teenagers, Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste (Gabriel and Emilie's son). He took advantage of their suffering to lure them to the side of evil, as Marinette's life was a constant nightmare due to Chloé Bourgeois's bullying, while Adrien was still deeply hurt by his mother's death and unable to move on. He entrusted them with the Miraculous of the Ladybug and the Cat respectively, and gave them the mission to find and defeat Betterfly, and return the stolen Miraculous to him. They became the supervillains Shadybug and Claw Noir.
After some time, Shadybug and Claw Noir managed to find the secret headquarters of the Resistance and broke in to defeat Betterfly once and for all. Fortunately, the Resistance was already aware that the villains were onto them and had devised a last-resort plan: they would travel to a parallel universe where the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous are used for good and seek help from their holders. To accomplish this, Betterfly used his superpowers to kamikotize Alya into Ubiquity, a superhero with the ability to exist in all universes simultaneously. She had the power to take control of any version of Alya Césaire from any universe, as well as using her body as a portal between any two universes. She connected herself to the Alya from Ladybug and Cat Noir's universe and opened a portal to allow Betterfly to reach them. However, Betterfly was not the only one to cross it, as Shadybug and Claw Noir were able to force Ubiquity into opening the portal for them as well and followed Betterfly through it.
Shadybug and Claw Noir managed to hunt Betterfly down and almost defeated him, but Ladybug and Cat Noir intervened and the three heroes managed to escape. Shadybug and Claw Noir later allied themselves with Monarch in an attempt to seize all three of their Miraculous, but the heroes managed to evade Monarch's attacks and convince Shadybug and Claw Noir to renounce evil and try other ways of dealing with their problems. Shadybug and Claw Noir then became the superheros Ladybug and Paw Noir. They returned with Betterfly to their universe and joined the Resistance in the fight against the Supreme.

Trivia[]
- Interestingly, all members of the Resistance have counterparts in Ladybug and Cat Noir's universe who were also members of the group of the same name created by Nino to help the two superheroes in their mission to defeat Monarch (although Gabriel Agreste was only an honorary member, and was secretly Monarch himself).
- While the Supreme owns most of the Miraculous of the Mother Box, the Resistance holds the two most powerful ones (the ones of the Ladybug and the Cat, the only ones that would allow the Supreme to win instantly by making a wish), along with the one that allows them to act from a distance (the one of the Butterfly).
- The current fate of the Miraculous of the Peacock is unknown, as Shadybug and Claw Noir only ever mentioned their mission to recover the Butterfly Miraculous. Therefore, it might still be in Gabriel's possession, or the Supreme may have already recovered it.
- It's also unknown if the Supreme possesses the Miraculous of the Rabbit and if so why he hasn't used it to retrieve the others (unlike Ladybug and Fu, he wouldn't be afraid to alter the past, just like Monarch).
- On the other hand, it could be that the Supreme is afraid to alter the past as a result of possible creating a paradox that could result in erasing his own existence.
