Plot[]
In La Plage, Cerise is seen writing in a book. In her lair lie multiple stacks of books, hundreds in total, while Nooroo is paralyzed on the table, forced to watch.
In Marinette's room, Alya recaps the events of Gabriel Agreste's time as Hawk Moth, Shadow Moth, and Monarch, including facts such as that he was an adult male. Marinette, visibly shaken, adds that he wanted one wish, on the way akumatizing 212 people, and panics that she handed out all of the Miraculous to their separate holders, which she believes could be dangerous due to the possibility of one of the holders being akumatized. Alya reassures her that that is very unlikely to happen as they now know how to deal with their emotions better. As the sun rises, Marinette remembers her and Alya's movie date with Adrien and Nino respectively, but Alya, exhausted from staying up all night, suggests cancelling. Marinette, worried about the prospect of messing up with Adrien encourages her to come, and doesn't give it up.
Later, at a tram stop, the date has not been cancelled, and Alya and Nino handshake. Marinette tries to imitate them, but accidentally pokes Adrien. The four get onto the tram, and Alya and Marinette make faces at each other and copy each other's motions. Suddenly, the tram comes to a stop; there's a crack in the road. Alya and Nino transform into Rena Rouge and Carapace, both using their respective powers to get the tram back on track and to make sure traffic stops and goes at the right time. A few civilians congratulate and compliment these heroics.
In an alley, Carapace and Rena Rouge transform back, making a plan to leave Marinette and Adrien alone, which would also make time for them to investigate more about the new Butterfly Miraculous holder. Marinette frantically texts Alya upon noticing her and Nino's absences, but Alya brushes it off. Marinette is visibly nervous that she has to be alone with Adrien, which Adrien starts to notice at a point, but tries not to worry about it.
Adrien and Marinette wait in a line to enter Le Sorbonne to watch a movie, but Marinette looks around, noticing couples showing affection to each other in various ways. Marinette tries to imitate all of these, but ends up accidentally holding a stranger's hand. Adrien points out Ryuko's appearance, which Marinette uses as an escape to transform into Ladybug. Ryuko jumps down to a building on fire, but when she is about to use her Rain Dragon, Ladybug interrupts and uses her Lucky Charm to summon a hose to put out the fire. Later, Ladybug de-transforms back into Marinette and sneaks up to Adrien. Adrien asks where she went; she makes up that she went to get drinks, but there were none. Marinette sees the Café Crème and takes Adrien over to it.
Meanwhile, Alya and Nino are interviewing multiple people that have been akumatized by the new Butterfly Miraculous holder, both times getting no new information. Alya feels discouraged, but Nino reassures her that they'll get somewhere. At the café, Marinette orders pistachio shrimp cookies like a nearby couple is having. A young girl, Maya walks to the table to show Marinette her drawing, which Marinette acknowledges, redirecting her to the other table. Maya shows the other table her drawing, but the woman there shoos her away. Marinette sees the woman at another table rub her leg against her partner's leg, so she tries to copy them, but accidentally kicks Adrien. Adrien mentions seeing Miss Hound, so Marinette runs away once again.
Miss Hound travels to Mrs. Michelle's location, where her cat is stuck in a tree. Miss Hound is about to use Fetch to get the cat down, but Ladybug interrupts and uses her yo-yo to get the cat down. Miss Hound finishes her word, instead teleporting the cat to herself. Ladybug commends Miss Hound for her interrupted work, then notices Polymouse. Adrien, still waiting for Marinette, is approached by Phong, who asks where Marinette went. Adrien responds that she tends to come and go, and Phong awkwardly leaves him be. Adrien decides to join the superheroes and makes sure to pay for his meal. However, his payment is swept away by the wind.
Cat Noir joins Polymouse watching her superhero work being completed by Ladybug, although Polymouse was perfectly capable of completing the task herself. Ladybug gets a ball from under a truck, and then jumps up onto a rooftop. Cat Noir checks on her, finding her erratic behavior suspicious and pointing out that she has a team for a reason. Ladybug tries to excuse this by saying that her role as Guardian of the Miraculous requires her to check up on the team members in case of anything going wrong.
In the café, Maya attempts to show Phong her drawing, but her father dismisses her efforts. Feeling hurt, she goes to the bathroom to cry. There, an Ultrakuma slips in after her. In Maya's mind, the new Butterfly Miraculous holder, Chrysalis, begins to speak to her. However, instead of introducing herself or revealing Maya's villain name, like Hawk Moth, she approaches the situation differently. She pretends to empathize with Maya's feelings about people not appreciating her drawings. Through this connection, she persuades Maya to become an akumatized villain known as The Illustrhater.
Alya and Nino are discussing the fact that they still haven't found anything, when the Illustrhater flies past. Rena Rouge and Carapace are hesitant to transform as it would technically be against the rules, but transform anyway. Civilians get stuck in a tram due to the Illustrhater's drawings, so Rena Rouge and Carapace help them out of the tram and get them to safety. Rena Rouge frantically calls Ladybug, who is helping take out the trash with Cat Noir. She explains that someone has been akumatized and urges Ladybug to be there as soon as possible.
The four superheroes attempt to approach the Illustrhater, who continues to make drawings that they dodge. Eventually, they hide in a house, where they come up with a plan to trap the Illustrhater, including Carapace's Shell-ter and a Lucky Charm, which is an empty art supply box (Carapace goes to get art supplies for the plan to work). They attempt to carry the plan out, but when Ladybug wraps her yo-yo around Carapace's Shell-ter, the Illustrhater draws a door, foiling the plan. Instead, they try to talk to the Illustrhater to trick her into giving up her akumatized object. They also try to figure out information about Chrysalis, including her gender or her name. Chrysalis tells the Illustrhater not to say anything about her, or she'll stop Maya from drawing.
The superheroes notice the Illustrhater avoiding their questions, and tell her that there are multiple voices, which the Illustrhater still tries to deny. Eventually, she grows annoyed with the constant questions, and yells at them to stop bothering her. Just then, Carapace comes with the now filled art supply box, and Ladybug offers her art supplies to the Illustrhater. Chrysalis tries to warn her that this is a trap, but when Rena Rouge summons a Mirage, she ignores that warning and hands over her akumatized object. Ladybug knocks the akumatized object out of the Illustrhater's hands, and Cat Noir Cataclysms it, transforming the Illustrhater back into Maya. After Ladybug does her Miraculous Ladybug, she asks Maya if she remembers anything about her akumatization. Maya only remembers everything leading up to the akumatization, but nothing following. Ladybug gives Maya a magical charm, and reminds her that she can resist the voices. The superheroes look through Maya's sketchbook, and compliment her drawings. Ladybug sees one of her, and after asking Maya if it's supposed to be her, Maya decides that she can keep it as a reward for saving her.
In Marinette's room, Alya is disappointed about not having any information regarding the new holder of the Butterfly Miraculous. However, Marinette reminds her that they do know a few things: the new holder is changing their voice, they won't reveal their identity to their victims, and they want to keep their true intentions hidden. She also reflects on her own erratic behavior from earlier and realizes that she can rely on her team after all. Tikki gives Alya a Kwagatama and officially makes her Marinette's deputy, which is meant to be used in case something happens to Marinette. Alya responds that she hopes she will never have to use it, as that would mean something has happened to Marinette. They share a hug, supporting each other in this challenging time.
At the theater, Marinette and Adrien are sitting together. Adrien wonders if Marinette no longer wants to be his girlfriend, but she reassures him that she is also afraid of being in a serious relationship. Adrien admits that this is new for him as well, but expresses confidence that they can navigate it together. They hold hands, and soon Marinette falls asleep with her head resting on Adrien's shoulder. Adrien relaxes into the moment, resting his head on Marinette's shoulder as he closes his eyes.
At the café, Cerise/Chrysalis, writes in her notebook. Only her hands and legs are visible, highlighting that she was the first person to reject Maya's drawings earlier. She closes the notebook and walks away, blending in like any ordinary civilian. In a voiceover, Cerise declares that she is both everywhere and nowhere, like a chameleon. She insists that the heroes will never learn anything about her, about us, or about them; they won't get anywhere.

Plot Developments[]
- It is shown that Ladybug allows all of her superhero friends to use their Miraculous to help people on their own as long as it is not to fight against an akumatized villain.
- It is also revealed that some of Ladybug's superhero friends have already unlocked their ability to use their powers infinitely as well, as shown when Carapace used his twice in a short period of time. In "Revelator", it is revealed all heroes unlocked their adult powers under Ladybug and Cat Noir's guidance.
- Nooroo now has black wings and Cerise paralyzes him whenever she writes down her secrets in one of her notebooks. It is unknown if Nooroo is redesigned or this is a result of his strict treatment by Chrysalis.
- It is revealed that Chrysalis can make sure that her akumatized villains do not share details about her with any member of the French Miraculous superhero team by threatening to remove their powers. This is to further leave the Miraculous team in the dark about her true goal, which is indeed to take the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to make a wish, as shown in "Miraculous London".
- It is shown that she can partially eject an ultrakuma from the object it was placed in, to further scare her victims into submission.
- It is revealed that two people were akumatized by Chrysalis before Maya: Caline Bustier and Caroline (who is akumatized in "Sublimation").
- This means that "Sublimation" takes place before this episode, despite their production codes. The previous episode, "Climatiqueen", takes place chronologically before "Sublimation", since in that episode Adrien discovers his love for running and meets Sublime for the first time.
- Furthermore, Miss Hound has her new suit, which she gains in "Daddycop", placing the episode before this one.
- Tikki gives a Kwagatama to Alya by Marinette's request, so that Alya is able to access the latter's memories as Guardian in case anything happens to her. As such, Marinette officially makes Alya her successor, which she stated she would do in "Optigami".
- Through this situation, it is revealed that Miraculous holders can not only get a kwagatama from the kwami they're assigned too, but they can get one from any kwami whether it is by permission from the Guardian or as long as they spend enough time together.
- It's unknown if Kwamis that are held captive like Nooroo and used without their own consent or the Guardian's permission can create a kwagatama if ordered by their wielder.
- Since Tikki gave a kwagatama to Marinette in "Befana" and stated she gave one to all her previous wielders in the same episode, this makes Adrien the only one not to have received one from her not counting Gabriel due to him briefly using of her and the Ladybug Miraculous in "Deflagration" and without transforming "Re-creation").
- Marinette naming Alya, her official successor not only inheriting the Miracle Box but the Ladybug mantle, meaning she and Trixx may have to separate one day but according to adult Bunnyx in "Timetagger", Marinette is still Ladybug in her time there could be a few reasons for this:
- It could be that Marinette didn't renounce the box yet.
- Something must have happened to Alya and Marinette had to choose someone else.
- Marinette did surrender the box erasing her memory and giving the mantle to Alya as so but similar to "Kwami's Choice", caused her to resume as Ladybug.
- In the future, Marinette and the Order found a way to alter transference spell of Miracle Box allowing Marinette to keep her memories as Ladybug thereby allowing her and Alya to keep their mantles as Ladybug and Rena Rouge.
- Carapace's shield is revealed to be able to be used as a skateboard and Polymouse's skip rope is revealed to be able to be used to swing between buildings (like Ladybug's yo-yo).
- Him using his shield as a skateboard parallels his movie counterpart having the same skills.
- It's revealed that Fetch can be used on living beings.
Trivia[]
- Not counting trailers, this is the first released piece of Miraculous media that doesn't include the old animation style at all.
- Besides the new animation, the 2D animation used for calls, messages, long range communications and imagination sequences was replaced by the one used for Miraculous Chibi.
- A part of Bunnyx's transformation sequence music is used after Rena Rouge and Carapace rescue the citizens on the tram.
- It's revealed that the café known as "Le Café" in the previous seasons is now called "Café Crème".
- Cerise was shown to have been spying on Marinette and Adrien at that café, though her intentions remain unclear.
- This is the second episode that shows fire, after "Elation".
- This is the first time since "Risk" that a child is akumatized.
- According to Marinette, during Gabriel's time as the Butterfly Miraculous holder, he was able to akumatize 212 people, including the akumatizations in the "New York" and "Shanghai" specials. However, he only individually akumatized 76 people on-screen, including himself, implying that 136 others were akumatized off-screen.
- By counting re-akumatizations, including the additional off-screen ones recorded by Marinette in "Mr. Pigeon 72", and by not counting akumatizations that happened in alternative timelines (such as Cat Blanc and Ephemeral, in their eponymous episodes; and Bugfighter in "Intuition"), akumatizations that Marinette is unaware off (such as Gabriel's self-akumatizations in "Dearest Family" and "Conformation", and Nathalie's akumatizations into Catalyst in the eponymous episode and "Ladybug"), that would make around 270 akumatizations (271 if Marinette counts Cat Blanc).
- It is possible that even Marinette lost track of how many people were akumatized or re-akumatized.
References[]
- This is the first time Marinette and Adrien go to the movies as a real couple.
- In both "Ephemeral" and "Jubilation", Marinette and Adrien were both present in the movies as a real couple, but these situations are excluded due to the fact that they take place in realities that do not exist in the real permanent timeline.
- Overall, this is the second time in the permanent timeline, along with "Miraculous New York", that Ladybug has summoned three Lucky Charms.
- She had also summoned three throughout alternate timelines in "Ephemeral" and "Elation".
- What Marinette said about being afraid of messing up everything leading to her controlling impulses refers to how she was behaving in Seasons 1-4 towards Adrien due to her obsession with him and in the later season in general due to the new burden of guardianship.
- Cat Noir recognizes Ladybug's erratic behavior (most likely from "Gang of Secrets") but only tries to make small talk with and watch over her until she calms down, knowing she won't or can't give a straight answer if he directly asks her what's wrong.
- But this time, it is not only about her love life; now it's about her worrying for the whole team, referencing Marinette's worry for Alya back in "Sentibubbler".
- In Alya's room, multiple photos in the old animation style can be seen in the background.
- The images are from the end cards of "Lady Wifi" and "Animan", and the characters' Instagram accounts.
Errors[]
- During the sequence when Alya comforts Marinette, the chain of the Fox Miraculous phases through her body.
- Ryuko's Water Dragon power is incorrectly referred to as "rain powers" in this episode, from Adrien naming it as such to Ryuko herself saying "Rain Dragon" when she was about to put out the fire from the building.
- Or it's possible that Ryuko can now combine wind and water to make rain.
- When Maya tries to show Marinette her drawing before Marinette is about to transform, her sideburns phase through her ears.
- When Ladybug and Cat Noir takes off to join Rena Rouge and Carapace against the Illustrhater, Cat Noir is shown with two staffs, one on his back and one in his hands.
- During the sequence where Ladybug captures the ultrakuma, the yo-yo phases through the camera, allowing the broken inside of the yo-yo to be visible.
- When Ladybug opens her yo-yo, the light emanating from the yo-yo does not stretch behind it or blur as it moves.
- There are multiple minor errors in the post-credits scene:
- The lighting on the chairs during the zoom-in changes.
- When the camera zooms out from the café, there is a random shadow in front of the it which doesn't belong to anything.
- One background character walks through a tree trunk in the top right part of the screen.
- When Rena Rouge undoes her illusions, she says "Vanish" instead of "Reality".
- Or it could be possible that she can use more than only one word as long as it conveys the same meaning or intention.
- Rena Rouge's shadow glitches while trying to interrogate Illustrhater.
- While waiting in line for the movie, Adrien simply slides forward as the queue progresses.
- The same thing happens to Marinette as she is getting on the tram alone with Adrien.
- Miss Hound's beret doesn't have the button with the dog symbol.
- During the sequence where Ladybug uses the water hose to stop the fire, Ryuko is shown with two swords - one in her hand and another still in the sheath on her back.
- During Marinette and Adrien's date, the man who sits behind them doesn't have his pants in some shots.
