"The Cake Race" is the ninth episode of Miraculous Chibi.[1]
Synopsis[]
Marinette is making a special birthday cake for Adrien, but is challenged by Chloe who also makes a birthday cake for Adrien as well. So who is going to win a race to make Adrien happy of his birthday party?
Characters[]
- Marinette Dupain-Cheng
- Adrien Agreste
- Chloé Bourgeois
- Tikki (animatic only)
- Civilians (alternative version only)
Trivia[]
- The webisode was created for a Miraculous Chibi playset.[2]
- This is the first physical appearance of both Marinette and Adrien in their civilian identities and not their superhero identities. However, Adrien did appear in pictures during the original run of the chibi series.
- This is the first appearance of Chloé in the chibi series. Before the release of this webisode as well as the chibi series being revived, a concept art of her was first shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2017.[3]
- The interior of the bakery is reused from Miraculous: Tales from Paris. Angie Nasca, the character designer, also worked on that web series.
- Both a variant of Mr. Cuddly and the Bee Miraculous make cameo appearances in this webisode.
- Chloé can be seen blowing a bubble from her bubblegum before the helicopter is about to land near her. This is a reference to her Quantic Universe counterpart where in both "Stoneheart (Origins - Part 2)" and "Animaestro", Chloé chewed on a piece of gum and blew a bubble before she was about to conduct a scheme that involves sticking her gum onto a chair.
- Even though the webisode contains cartoonish gags, it's surprising that neither of the cakes that Chloé and Marinette were carrying got damaged on their way to the Agreste mansion until the end of the webisode.
- On November 23, 2023, Esther Brustlein, one of the two storyboard artists, uploaded an animatic of this webisode on ArtStation.[4]
- The animatic revealed that Tikki was originally going to appear in this webisode. She was going to make a brief cameo appearance watching Marinette add the finishing touches to the cake, but that scene was cut for unknown reasons.
- There was going to be a scene where Marinette looked at the picture of the cake on her phone. The animatic revealed that the name of the cake Marinette wanted to give to Adrien is called "Gâteau d'Amour", which means "Love Cake" in French.
- While it wasn't specifically stated, it's implied Chloé ordered her cake instead of baking one herself unlike Marinette did in the animatic.
- Originally, the scene where Marinette fantasizes herself giving Adrien the cake and getting kissed by him in return isn't included in the animatic.
- Chloé was originally going to blow a bubble from her gum before she noticed Marinette was about to bring an identical cake to Adrien.
- In the animatic, Chloé was going to throw her sunglasses, Mr. Cuddly, a lipstick tube, a comb, and a hair roller at Marinette. But in the final version, she only threw Mr. Cuddly and a round hairbrush.
- The Bee Miraculous was originally not going to appear in this webisode.
- There's an entire scene that is changed for the final version.
- In the animatic, Marinette was going to catch one of Chloé's hair comb and throw it back to her. The hair comb was going to slice through one of the strawberries on Chloé's cake and cause it to land on top of her hair.
- In the final version, Marinette noticed a water pipeline outside of a store ahead of Chloé. So, she took out the Bee Miraculous from her purse and threw it at the pipeline, causing water to leak onto Chloé's hair.
- On December 2, 2023, an alternative version of this episode was released.[5]
- Although there isn't any alternate ending like "Panic at the Park", the alternative version features minor changes to the background.
- In the original version, the streets of Paris seem empty except for a few cars when Marinette presses multiple pedestrian call buttons to slow down Chloé's limousine.
- In the alternative version, more cars, background characters, and pigeons are added to make the city more populated to the viewers. Even though the background characters didn't move at all, the cars can be seen moving around the streets and the pigeons are seen flying in the background.
- Despite the changes made for the alternative version, the original version can still be viewed from a compilation video.[6]
- This is the second time in the franchise of celebrating Adrien's birthday after The Bubbler from the first season of the original series.
Errors[]
- Note: The following errors didn't get fixed in the alternative version.
- In some scenes, the floral design on Marinette's shirt is on the right instead of on the left:
- This is also seen on the title card.
- When she screams after noticing Chloé carrying an identical cake.
- Before she vandalized a car wash sign to trick Chloé into thinking it was a hair salon.
- When she is running down the hill and angrily glaring at Chloé in her limousine.
- During the scene when she presses a pedestrian call button.
- After she drew a helicopter landing area on the street near Chloé.
- Marinette's purse is missing from the title card.
- When Marinette vandalized the car wash window, her purse wasn't layered around her arm. And before she does the vandalization, her purse is on her right arm instead of her left arm.
- When Marinette notices Chloé carrying an identical cake after leaving the bakery, she's standing on the crosswalk. But when she screams in horror, she's suddenly standing on a sidewalk across from the bakery.
- When Chloé turns around and notices that Marinette has an identical cake to deliver to Adrien, her ponytail gets cut off and her eyeshadows are missing.
- Marinette left the Tom & Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie at the beginning of the webisode. However, after that scene, the bakery can later be seen in the background of the webisode multiple times when Marinette and Chloé both race to the Agreste mansion.
- Chloé is only seen with her purse when she first appears in this webisode and when she and Marinette start racing toward the Agreste mansion. After those two scenes, her purse disappears for the remainder of the webisode.
- When Chloé is seen throwing Mr. Cuddly at Marinette, her purse can be seen disappearing and reappearing for a few frames.
- When Marinette and Chloé begin their race to the Agreste mansion, they are both suddenly running down the street. But in the very next scene, Chloé is suddenly running on the sidewalk.
- Right after Chloé blows a raspberry at Marinette while the former is in her limo, they are both heading down the hill. But for the first eight frames, the background behind Marinette has large chunks of the buildings cut off while the camera is swiping down the hill to get to where the Agreste mansion is.
- Before the chewed-up gum that Chloé threw lands on the sole of one of Marinette's shoes, Adrien's party hat is missing.
- Marinette's purse is on her right arm instead of her left arm when she trips to the entrance of the Agreste mansion.
- In the shot where Chloé calls her limo over, most of her right arm is missing.
- In the alternative version that was released on December 2, 2023, none of the background characters are moving.
