—Penalteam To Rooster Bold, "Penalteam" |
Sublimation is the special superpower granted by the Rooster Miraculous to its owner.
Description[]
This superpower allows the user to give themselves any special super ability they choose. It is activated by the user speaking its name.
Miraculous owner[]
There are two seen ways of activating the power: the Rooster Miraculous owner charges the tip of the Fountain Pen with magical gold-orange energy, then writes out the intended power on the palm of their hand. The user then touches their hand to their chest with the hand they wrote on, causing a ripple of gold-orange energy to spread across their torso. The user will then gain the intended ability.[1]Or they can simply call the power, creating a magical gold-orange energy on their hand and they place it on their chest.
The ability the user is capable of giving themselves can be an actual special superpower, like super strength, invisibility, flight, or even the ability to travel across the Multiverse. Alternatively, the user can also give themselves an incredibly specific atypical physical capability, such as the ability to knit a very comfy pair of socks.
The power the holder chooses can only be used once.[2] However, as seen in "Pretension", if the user chooses a power that functions continuously, such as an enhanced sense of smell, then the ability can technically be used multiple times. Additionally, the user can bestow a condition on the power that makes it possible to use it multiple times, as seen in "Penalteam" when Rooster Bold gave himself the power to always score a goal anytime he kicked a soccer ball.
Notably, as seen in "Strikeback", "Pretension" and "Conformation", if the power the user gives themselves involves bestowing a new property onto something, then the power itself will manifest as gold-orange glow on their hands, which they can bestow on the target by touching it, at which point the glow will vanish.
Notably, as seen in "Illusion", "Deflagration", "Pretension", "Conformation" and "Miraculous Paris", if the user also has the superpower of the Mouse Miraculous, Multitude, then only one of them will need to activate Sublimation and all of the user's clones will have the chosen power granted to them as well. However, it is currently unknown if any of the clones can achieve this, or if it has to be done by the original specifically.
Additionally, if the user exists as multiple separate (but still one and the same) beings, then one can give themselves a power with Sublimation and it can be used by the other being, as seen when Matagi Gozen gave herself the power of enhanced sense of smell and the power was used by her Inuma steed.
Orikko[]
The effects of Orikko's Sublimation is unknown, but it would most certainly be unconstrained and results in some kind of catastrophe, though he would be able to restrain it somewhat.
Weaknesses[]
It's revealed in "Destruction" that Sublimation does have some limitations:
- Since each kwami embodies a unique abstract concept and a concept can only exist once in the universe, Sublimation cannot give the user a superpower that already belongs to another kwami. For example, it cannot allow the user to travel through time, as that is the essence of Fluff's power; it also can't be used to purify akumas, as that is part of Tikki's power.
- Another weakness is that Sublimation cannot bestow a superpower that interferes with another kwami's magic, more specifically any secondary magic given by the Miraculous or undo the damages caused by Miraculous superpowers (since interfering with or stopping a kwami's main superpower is the effect of Uproar and Resistance respectively). For example, the user would not be able to uncover the secret identities of other Miraculous holders, since their suits Quantum masking is part of the magic of their kwami. Sublimation also cannot heal the damage caused by the Cataclysm or awaken someone who has fallen into eternal slumber from using a damaged Miraculous.
- Finally, the effect of Sublimation can only come in the form of an ability or superpower and it cannot take the form of a wish. For example, it cannot allow the user to know the location of a specific person or object. If the user wanted a pair of socks, that would be a wish, but if the user wanted to knit a pair of socks, that would be an ability.
There are some other instances in which Sublimation was unable to solve certain problems. Although, it is possible that Sublimation actually could have done something, but these problems were simply seen as a selfish use of the power, and the heroes believe that the Miraculouses should not be used for the wrong reasons:
- Since Wang Fu never got his memories back, Sublimation apparently cannot restore the memories of a guardian whose memories of the Miraculouses were erased after passing on the Miracle Box. This is probably due to the nature of the spell used to erase a former guardian's memories, with it being possibly related to the Miracle Box itself, therefore connected to the power of the kwamis.
- Master Fu was unable to join the fight against Hawk Moth because of his old age and bad back, Sublimation was apparently unable to do anything about this. This is probably due to the fact that reverting one's age can be seen as a wish or since gaining a bad back comes with age.
In addition to the limitations of the power itself, the super ability granted through the use of Sublimation might have weaknesses of its own, In "Deflagration", Monarch used Sublimation to give himself the power of invisibility, he got covered by various condiments, making it easy for him to be seen, rendering invisibility useless.
As seen in "Pretension", the power the user grants themselves through Sublimation is not automatically infallible, and the users opponent could outwit the chosen power; Matagi Gozen gave herself the power of enhanced smell to locate Argos via the scent from a feather from his Hand Fan, but Argos broke the fan into pieces and spread them, and by extension his scent, throughout the city so Matagi Gozen couldn't pick up his actual trail.
Resistance can cancel out the effects if Sublimation is used for attacking.
In "Miraculous Paris", it is revealed that using the special superpower uses vital energy from the Kwami, but also from the miraculous holder. It's one thing for an adult holder, but for an underage holder, who is less physically and mentally capable of handling the strain, there is a security system in place that limits them to only using their special power once and causes them to detransform before it becomes dangerous. However, using the Miraculous for evil overrides the limiter, allowing an underage holder to use their powers to their full potential. As previously stated, a younger holder cannot handle the strain; dark veins of corruption will gradually spread across their body, and they will inevitably be destroyed.

Trivia[]
- According to Thomas Astruc, "Sublimation" can bestow any power that the user may need (e.g.: Flying, Super Strength, Advanced Agility, Shapeshifting). However, said power cannot take the form of a wish (eg: The ability to discover the identities of superheroes, or recreate the world).
- This is later shown in "Destruction", as the kwamis explain to Gabriel that Sublimation can't copy the power of another kwami (meaning he couldn't travel through time or use the power of creation) and can't interfere with the power of the other kwamis (meaning he couldn't discover the identities of other Miraculous holders as it is part of the kwami's magic).
- However, it appears that the user can replicate the abilities of other kwamis as long as they add some sort of limitation (such as being able to multiply objects or being able to teleport to alternate universes.
- The power being born from the concept of Pretension is shown by how the user can get any power they desire in order to achieve their goal. Not just that, but the power's limitations may be a representation of the meaning of the concept about one thinking they are better than they really are, so, even though Sublimation can get close to a especific Miraculous superpower, it can never truly replicate it.
- Sublimation is the name for the chemical process where solid matter transitions directly to gas. But it can also be from sublime, which means extremely good, very great, awesome, majestic.
- Sublimation shares some similarities with Kamikotization, as both powers can give specific powers.
- However, while Sublimation gives a power to its user, Kamikotization gives powers to another (although kamikotization can also give powers to its user, who has to detransform first).
- Another difference is that Sublimation can only give one power, while Kamikotization can potentially give the recipient multiple powers.
- Also, Sublimation gives the user whatever power they want, whereas the powers granted by Kamikotization are determined by the recipients character and/or circumstances.
- Despite Sublimation not being able to copy the powers of other kwamis, it can give a power that is similar to them, as long it doesn't share their basic core function. These powers can even appear to be an improved version of the Miraculous powers. Examples of this are:
- Rooster Bold being able to multiply objects, despite Multiplication being the power of the Mouse Miraculous, as he didn't multiply himself but an object, and the copies he created weren't smaller than the original.
- Monarch being able to become invisible, despite the Fox Miraculous allowing the user to create an illusion conceal something from view, as the invisible Monarchs were physically invisible, and if someone touched them, they wouldn't become visible again, unlike the Fox Miraculous' illusions. Akumatization could also turn someone invisible as shown in "Antibug", "Catalyst" and in "Adoration".
- Matagi Gozen being able to locate anyone through an object belonging to them, despite the Dog Miraculous locating everything the ball touches, as Matagi Gozen locates a person, not an object. Additionally, she did not have the power to directly retrieve the person in question.
- Nightormentor being able to fly, despite the Dragon Miraculous Superpower allowing the user to turn into wind and fly away, as the flying Nightormentors' body weren't turned into wind, and if someone try to tie them, they won't be able to escape, unlike Wind Dragon.
- Monarch being able to create a portal for traveling to other universes, despite the Horse Miraculous allowing the user to teleport through portals, as Monarch didn't teleport to another location in his universe, but to alternate universes in the multitverse.
- Sublimation is the ninth known superpower, after Cataclysm, Akumatization, Second Chance, Voyage, Dragon Miraculous Superpower, Liberation, and Clout, that does not require a weapon to activate.
- Furthermore, Sublimation is the twelfth superpower, after Liberation, Multitude, Gift, Resistance, Genesis, Shell-ter, Clout, Voyage, Dragon Miraculous Superpower, Uproar, and Fetch, to be used by an akumatized villain.
- However, Sublimation is the eleventh superpower, after Multitude, Gift, Resistance, Genesis, Shell-ter, Clout, Voyage, Dragon Miraculous, Uproar, and Fetch, to be used by an akumatized villain via the Alliance rings.
- In "Deflagration", though Monarch was invisible, the megakuma he released from his cane was visible.
- However, it is possible that Sublimation does not affect other biotic beings (whether magical or not) besides the Rooster Miraculous user themselves, unless they are circumstantial clones of the user.
