“ | Every good fight is worth fighting. We shouldn't be influenced by our chances of winning, but whether or not it's the right thing to do. Remember, Marinette, you gotta know when to step in. That's the only way you can change things in life. | ” |
—Socqueline Wang, "Derision" |
Socqueline Wang is a minor character of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. She is a student at Lycée Claude Monet and a former schoolmate of Marinette Dupain-Cheng. She sometimes helps out at her family's arts and crafts supply shop.
Appearance
Physical appearance
She looks similar to Marinette Dupain-Cheng, with longer hair and ponytails. Like Marinette, she is half Chinese, half French, and has blue eyes and a light skin-tone.
Civilian attire
She has black square-shaped glasses and wears a black sweater and a red-black plaid shirt, bright pink jeans and red sport shoes with white laces.
In the flashback in "Derision", it is shown that last school year, when she was in the 9th grade, she wore a dark blue shirt and white sweater and black jeans with the same sport shoes.
Personality
Socqueline is an energetic teenage girl. She is a fan of Adrien Agreste, and is even ecstatic when she learns that Marinette is in the same class as him. She is also a fan of Ladybug, as she dresses up as her and pretends to be her, unaware that she puts herself in grave danger. Her greatest desire is to help Ladybug and Cat Noir. She is not fond of her former classmate Chloé Bourgeois, and would always defend Marinette whenever she bullied her.
In fact, it's showed in "Derision" that Socqueline was basically the only person at school who was not afraid of standing up against Chloé, who, in turn, was intimidated by a girl older than her precisely because she didn't fear her. Just like Adrien learned, she too looked beyond knowing that force, intimidation nor status can only go so far.
Abilities
Socqueline is a very talented gymnast, being a champion in the Grand Prix Gymnastics three years in a row. She also practices taekwondo. Socqueline is also very clever as she was able to hide her Ladybug identity from Marinette very skillfully. While not as good as Lila, she is adequate at acting or deceiving people.

Relationships
Friends/Allies
Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug
Marinette and Socqueline have been friends since at least they both were studying at the Collège Françoise Dupont, with their respective mothers being friends with one another. In fact, Socqueline is the closest thing Marinette has to an older sister.
Unlike Marinette, who lacked confidence, Socqueline was full of it, and wasn't afraid to stand up against bullies. Because of that, as showed in the flashback in "Derision", she was the only person at school who would defend Marinette against Chloé. However, because she was one year older than her, she became worried for her friend as there would be a time when she would not be able to defend her from Chloé, as she would graduate and move to another school, wanting Marinette to learn how to stand up for herself.
Socqueline would also advised Marinette to be careful with Kim, knowing the latter's crush on the boy, and warning her to be wary because of his careless attitude. This caused her to follow Marinette during her date with him, allowing her to be present when Kim played a cruel prank on Marinette after being manipulated by Chloé. She is able to prevent Chloé from publishing the video of Kim's prank by breaking the phone it was on, but that earned her a two-week suspension due to Chloé threatening Principal Damoclès; Socqueline ended up missing the end-of-the-year party and graduation. She told a remorseful Marinette that she doesn't regret what she had done and inspired her to stand up for herself.
After Socqueline's graduation from Françoise Dupont, she and Marinette kind of drifted apart, as they went to study on different schools on the next school year. However, their friendship remained intact, as seen when they ended up meeting each other again in "Jubilation". Despite Socqueline's initial worry about leaving Marinette to deal with Chloé all by herself, but she is relieved and proud of Marinette when she learns her friend learned how to stand up to her.
However, despite being good friends, they both have different views about what is the right thing to do when it comes to helping Ladybug and Cat Noir against Monarch. Socqueline is unaware that Marinette is Ladybug, so she disagrees with the latter's statement that the best way to help the superheroes is to not take unnecessary risks, as that would also force them to take risks as well.
Socqueline is a great fan of Ladybug and admires her work and Cat Noir's greatly. Because of her admiration for them and her eagerness to help, she would many times dress up as Ladybug and perform many good deeds. After becoming a target and a hostage for Darker Owl, Ladybug makes her see that the best way for her to help is to not place herself in unnecessary danger. Nevertheless, Socqueline will always help the heroes in their plans, like she did in "Transmission" and "Perfection".Denis Damoclès
Mr. Damoclès and Socqueline seem to have a rather good relationship as seen in "Jubilation", even after the latter no longer studies at the former's school. This is shown when she helps him while pretending to be Ladybug whenever he ends up in trouble while performing his good deeds as The Owl. Inclusive, Mr. Damoclès is shown to buy supplies (like materials to do his owl mask) from her family's shop. Socqueline also seems to be encouraging towards Mr. Damoclès' superhero work, even if sometimes her encouragement may cause the opposite effect at the wrong time (like when Mr. Damoclès was feeling down about being The Owl).
During one of Marinette's flashbacks in "Derision", it was shown that, despite having a good relationship with her former principal, Socqueline was suspended by Mr. Damoclès for the rest of the school year (causing her to miss the end-of-the-year party and graduation) for something that happened outside the school out of fear of what Chloé's father, the mayor, could do. Despite that, Socqueline didn't hold a grudge on him and they continued to be on good terms with one another.
When confronted by Darker Owl, Socqueline did everything she could to help deakumatize him like tricking to reveal where his megakuma was so she could record the information for Ladybug.
Adrien Agreste/Cat Noir
Socqueline is a great admirer of Adrien, including having him as an Avatar on her Alliance ring. After learning that Marinette studies at the same class as him, she wishes she had got hold off an year just to be able to at least study at the same school as him.
Just as she is an admirer of him, she is also one of Cat Noir, admiring his work and Ladybug's greatly. Because of her admiration for them and her eagerness to help, Socqueline would many times dress up as Ladybug and perform many good deeds. After becoming a target and a hostage for Darker Owl, she is saved by Cat Noir. Despite promising Ladybug to never put herself in unnecessary danger, Socqueline would always help the heroes in their plans, like she did in "Transmission" and "Perfection".
Sabine Cheng
It is implied in a flashback in "Derision", that Socqueline forged a friendship with Marinette's mother by honoring Sabine's promise of wanting Socqueline to protect Marinette from Chloé's constant bullying.
Enemies
Chloé Bourgeois
Unlike most of the students and teachers at school during the previous school year, Socqueline was not afraid of the rich girl and would always stand up to her whenever she caught her bullying Marinette. In fact, she was the only person Chloé wouldn't mess with precisely because the former was not afraid of her. But just because Socqueline wasn't afraid of Chloé, it didn't meant that she was not out of her reach. Such as after preventing Chloé from publishing a video of Marinette falling for one of Kim's cruel pranks by breaking the phone where the video was, the mayor's daughter was able to manipulate Principal Damoclès to suspend her for the rest of the remaining school year, even if he didn't actually had the power to punish Socqueline for something she did outside of the school.
While Socqueline didn't appear in "Revolution", it is likely that she was thrown into the Chloé inhumane detention center and was freed by Ladybug and Cat Noir. It is also likely that she protested against Chloé being mayor off-screen.
Sabrina Raincomprix
Just as Socqueline dislikes Chloé, she is also shown to dislike Sabrina very much due to supporting Chloé's evil actions against Marinette. It's possible that she knows that Sabrina was being used by Chloé and doesn't see her as a great rival compared to Chloé. Sabrina overhears Socqueline and Marinette's conversation regarding Marinette's feelings for Kim and tells Chloé this to manipulate Kim into playing a prank on her. Just like Chloé, Socqueline also gives Sabrina a tense look when she breaks Chloé's phone. It's unknown how their relationship is after this.
Lê Chiến Kim
Socqueline is shown to have a dislike for Kim for him to be too much clueless about his annoying behavior, warning Marinette to be careful with him when trying to express her feelings for him. Her concern for Marinette regarding Kim is what drove her to follow her to the pool. After Marinette has her heart broken because of Kim's cruel prank, Socqueline is the one to have Kim go away before going to console Marinette. It's unknown how their relationship is after this, but she likely dislikes him even more for what he did to Marinette.

Etymology
- Socqueline's name is a portmanteau of the French word socque and the name Jacqueline.
- Socque means "clog",[4] referring to a type of shoe made entirely of wood. Clogs are traditionally protective footwear for agricultural workers, and are negatively associated with the cheap footwear of the working class, though are considered fashionable by some cultures.
- Jacqueline is the feminine form of Jacques, the French version of the name Jack, which ultimately stems from the Hebrew name Jacob. The name is thought to come from one of several roots that mean "supplanter" (one who replaces), "to follow/to be behind", or from the word for "heel" (which may also refer to her name's "clog" meaning).[5]
Trivia
- Her character appears to be based on the Ladybug PV version of Marinette, just as Félix Fathom is based on the PV version of Adrien.
- Socqueline is one year older than Marinette, having graduated from the Collège Françoise Dupont. Evidence of that is how she wished of failing a grade just to be in Marinette's class with Adrien.
- In "Derision", it's revealed she was suspended from school two weeks before the end of the school year and her graduation because of Chloé who she was trying to protect Marinette from.
- It's also implied that Socqueline is the reason why Marinette styles her hair with pigtails, as she was her protector against Chloé and hoped to get as much confidence as she has to stand up to the rich girl.
- In "Derision", it's revealed she was suspended from school two weeks before the end of the school year and her graduation because of Chloé who she was trying to protect Marinette from.
- Socqueline is the first new character to be introduced in the season 5.
- Socqueline is the third character to have their first/last name called "Wang", following Master Fu and Wang Cheng.
- Out of these three characters, she is the only female, minor, and one whose last name is Wang instead of their first one.
- Socqueline is the first person, who was not involved in their creation, to be seen owning an Alliance ring.
- She and Mireille are the only known students of Collège Françoise Dupont not to have been akumatized in any way.
