Plot[]
As Ondine waits on the steps of the school, she decides to apply her new lip balm before spotting Kim approaching with his two fathers. After he splits from them to join Ondine, she tries to give him a kiss with her new lip balm, but he pulls the old "Got your nose" prank on her and runs into the school. Taking it in stride, she goes after him. Unknown to either of them, Zoé's ex-classmate Ray, and his two new buddies, Loïc and Nelson, plan on splitting the two up as they follow after them to begin their wicked plan.
At lunch, Ondine is sitting with Diane, Marinette, Alya, Juleka, Rose, Kagami, Mylène, and Zoé. Marinette asks Alya why she is chatting with Nino again, especially since they will be seeing each other in less than an hour. Alya explains that she knows that, but Nino just told her what he had for breakfast, and now he’s saying he’s about to brush his teeth and go to the bathroom before he leaves. Marinette is surprised to learn that they really share everything, and Alya reminds her that Nino is her boyfriend and also her best friend, so they keep almost zero secrets from each other. Startled, Marinette looks around and asks the other girls if they tell their boyfriends or girlfriends everything too. Mylène replies that she tells Ivan everything, although he is a bit more reserved, as she doesn’t know much about his family yet. However, she believes she will learn more about him in time. Juleka says she and Rose just really understand each other. Kagami chimes in, saying that Juleka and Rose are lucky since Félix is on the other side of the sea, making communication challenging. Rose asks Kagami how she manages it, which prompts Kagami to imagine her, and Félix as Argos and Ryuko using their space power-up to kiss in the sky. She quickly covers up her thoughts with video calls. Turning to Ondine, she then asks about her and Kim. Ondine admits that she has been trying to get a kiss from Kim, but he seems oblivious to her intentions due to his personality. The girls suggest ideas to help Ondine, and she ultimately agrees to write a poem for Kim to see if that will prompt him to kiss her. Meanwhile, Ray, Loïc, and Nelson decide who will get the first chance to break up Ondine and Kim, and Ray is chosen for the first attempt. He tries to bribe Kim with a new pair of swimming flippers, but with the condition that Kim can't speak to any girls, including Ondine, or he will have to return them. This approach works at first, but when Ondine reads her poem to Kim while the girls watch in secret, he can’t help but laugh at some of the words. Realizing that he has broken the terms of his deal with Ray, Kim goes to return the flippers, leaving Ondine heartbroken due to his ignorance of her feelings and her attempt to express them through the poem—despite Marinette and the other girls trying to cheer her up.
Kagami then suggests an old Japanese tradition with biscuit sticks that would have one person start on one end, their match on the other, and they would eat the stick until meeting in the middle and kissing. They use the sticks to lure Kim to Ondine, but when it comes time to do the tradition, Kim, again being ignorant and oblivious, takes the stick completely when he thinks Ondine wasn't going to finish it herself, further angering her. Meanwhile, Loïc tries his luck getting Kim to break up with Ondine before Marinette and the girls tried the biscuit stick ploy, but despite his direct, brute-force strategy, Kim is unable to be swayed, so it falls to Nelson to finish what Ray and Loïc started. Nelson confronts Kim at one point, and warns him of the threat of germs and diseases if he were to kiss Ondine, even mentioning it could send them into anaphylactic shock from an allergic reaction and turn Kim into looking like a toad due to getting warts on him just like one. This does the trick as Kim becomes fearful and hesitant to kiss Ondine. As a result, when Ondine decides, with a little encouragement from Marinette, to arm wrestle Kim, she easily beats him, but when she tries to kiss him, he freaks out and panics as he remembers what Nelson said and tries to explain it to Ondine. This is the last straw for her. Upset, heartbroken, and furious with Kim, she declares their relationship over, calling him despicable as she storms off to the restroom to cry.
After witnessing the incident, Marinette and Alya decide to talk to Ondine. However, before they can reach her, one of Chrysalis' Ultrakumas gets to Ondine first and infects her lip balm. In Ondine's mind, while she is wearing her swimsuit, Chrysalis speaks to her and offers her the chance to get back at Kim for breaking her heart. Feeling she has nothing to lose, Ondine accepts the offer and asks to be called the "Sleeping Syren". Chrysalis grants her wish, and as Ondine is akumatized—similar to when she became Syren due to Monarch's influence as Hawk Moth—her tears begin to overflow from the restroom, which catches the attention of Marinette and Alya. Soon, the tears start to flood all of Paris. Thinking quickly, Marinette and Alya evacuate their classmates and the other Miraculers to the rooftops for safety. Once they are alone, Marinette speaks to Tikki and decides to revoke the Monkey Miraculous from Kim next time she sees him, before transforming into Ladybug to rendezvous with Cat Noir to work out their plan.
Meanwhile, Ondine, now akumatized as the Sleeping Syren in the flood waters, does up her lips with her lip balm, before lying down and going to sleep, triggering a water mural of herself as a mermaid to tell her story, before sending her water knights to turn the innocent people of Paris into toads if they prove cowardly, just like with what Kim said to break her heart. Understanding this, and seeing Ladybug and Cat Noir, unable to warn them that they are walking into a trap, Kim sets off from the others to try and help, despite concern from Xuppu if he is doing the right thing. Elsewhere, Ladybug realizes that they are going to need the whole team to combat the Sleeping Syren's water forces, but as she brings out the Miraculous Call, she specifically excludes Kim, AKA King Monkey, when she sends out the call for help, still convinced she has to revoke the Monkey Miraculous from him for his behavior against Ondine. Kim later sees the rest of the team dashing across the rooftops to help, and wonders why Ladybug didn't contact him for assistance.
When the Miraculers arrive to meet up with Ladybug and Cat Noir, Miss Hound notices that Minotaurox is not alongside them, worried he might have fallen victim to Sleeping Syren's forces and was turned into a toad, but Ladybug assures them he'll be fine once they de-akumatize Ondine and reverse the damage with Miraculous Ladybug. Carapace also mentions King Monkey is not there either, but Ladybug assures them they don't need his help for this mission. Ladybug assigns Ryuko to help her and Cat Noir with getting to Sleeping Syren, while the rest of the team rescue as many of the Parisians as they can and take them to the Eiffel Tower for protection. Thanks to the efforts of the Miraculers, as Rena Rouge, Purple Tigress, Vesperia, Polymouse, Miss Hound, Pegasus, and Rooster Bold rescue civilians and take them to the tower, Carapace creates a Shell-ter to protect them there, and Caprikid and Pigella pass out towels to the civvies.
Meanwhile, Ladybug and Cat Noir power up into Aquabug and Aqua Noir, and joined by Ryuko using the Water Dragon power, they head for Sleeping Syren's location. However, as Ryuko keeps the guards busy, things take a turn for the worse when they spot Kim swimming down to help them. Distracted, Ryuko is jabbed by one of the water knights and turned into a toad herself, but the Dragon Miraculous survives, and Aquabug unifies it with the Ladybug Miraculous to become Aqua Dragonbug. She then rescues Kim and takes him back up onto a rooftop to confront him for what just happened, reverting to just Dragonbug once out of the water. Kim attempts to explain things to Dragonbug regarding Ondine, but Dragonbug chastises him and tells him that he needs to stop being so gullible and believing everything he hears without thinking for a second. Realizing she's right and that he said terrible things to Ondine, Kim is horrified, fearing Ondine will never forgive him and love him again. However, once she understands the truth of what led to Ondine's akumatization, Dragonbug assures Kim that if he explains everything to Ondine and apologizes, along with explaining how he feels about her, she'll forgive him. When he agrees, impressed, Dragonbug permits him to keep the Monkey Miraculous and allows him to assist in saving Ondine. Grateful, he transforms with Xuppu into King Monkey, and using his Uproar, he is able to remove the flood waters around Paris and clear the way to the Sleeping Syren.
Unfortunately, there was one last obstacle in the form of a water dragon guarding Sleeping Syren. When Dragonbug summoned a Lucky Charm that turned into a bag of cement, she realized how it could help them. She had Cat Noir pour the bag over the water dragon, causing the cement to mix with the water, forming concrete. She then used her Wind Dragon power to harden it, effectively immobilizing the creature. Once the dragon was taken care of, they turned their attention to de-akumatizing Ondine. Thanks to his keen sense of smell, King Monkey recognized the banana-flavored scent from the lip balm and was able to locate the lip balm tube. However, when Dragonbug broke it, no Ultrakuma emerged. Still detecting the scent, King Monkey deduced that the Ultrakuma was hidden in Ondine's lip balm on her lips. Using his Uproar ability, he summoned a pencil and used it to erase the lip balm from Sleeping Syren's lips, transforming it into a snorkel. Cat Noir then used his Cataclysm power on the snorkel to release the Ultrakuma, allowing Dragonbug to catch and purify it. Afterward, she used her Miraculous Dragonbug to repair all the damage around Paris, restoring Ryuko and the other victims to normal. As Ondine awoke, Dragonbug gifted her a Magical Charm along with some words of wisdom. The three Miraculers then regrouped with the restored Ryuko and returned to join the others. They shared a celebratory "Pound it!" fist-bump, to celebrate their teamwork and success.
However, in her lair at La Plage, Cerise refuses to admit defeat and plans to make sure she gets it right next time.
As a result, the next day, Kim apologizes to Ondine for hurting her feelings and Ondine apologizes for making such a big deal over a kiss. Kim finally musters the courage to kiss her, and realizes it wasn't so bad as the two kiss some more mundane ones. Marinette and the other girls were slighty disgusted by this and decide to give them some privacy. Later, Marinette offers the biscuit sticks to Adrien, and they are able to successfully pull off a kiss by eating their respective ends of the stick before meeting in the middle.
However, that night, Ray, Nelson, and Loïc felt frustrated as their efforts had backfired, as Loïc is stomping on a soda can on the stairs. Ray say that there are still plenty of couples to wreck. However, a dark figure with glowing yellow eyes appeared, standing on a lamppost. As the dark figure warned the trio that they would not get another chance to ruin another relationship, the dark figure jumped down toward them with unclear intentions...

Plot Developments[]
- Kim's parents make their first appearance, confirming that he in fact has two fathers: Vadim Ature, who appears to be an athlete much like his son, and Lê Cường Minh, who appears to be a physician.
- This also explains why he has two last names, as he got them from both his parents.
- One of Kim's parents calls Ondine "little mermaid", which is a reference to the episode Syren where Hawk Moth calls her that too.
- This also explains why he has two last names, as he got them from both his parents.
- It would appear Ray has his own group with two boys, Loïc and Nelson, and they appear to be very interested in causing havoc to his fellow students, especially couples, seen how dedicated they were in causing Ondine and Kim to break up.
- This parallels the trio in Season 5 consisting of Chloé Bourgeois, Sabrina Raincomprix and Lila Rossi/Cerise Bianca. Ray is the equivalent of Chloé, while Loïc is the equivalent of Sabrina (until Sabrina breaks off her "friendship" with Chloé), and Nelson being the equivalent of Lila/Cerise.
- In the post-credits scene, Ray, Loïc and Nelson are approached by Fury, a cloaked figure with a feminine voice.
- Interestingly, Fury is the superhero identity of Andy Baker, one of the main protagonists of Ghostforce, another ZAG Heroez show.
- Their personality types can be reflected on the way each one of them tried to manipulate Kim to break up with Ondine: Ray tried to bribe Kim with brand new flippers if he stopped talking with girls, showing his way to use his wealth to get what he wants; Loïc tried to force Kim to stop talking with Ondine, showing a more aggressive approach; Nelson took advantage of Kim's naive nature and manipulated him to think something bad would happen if he and Ondine ever kissed, showing a more cunning demeanor.
- It is implied that Ladybug has provided her fellow Miraculers with the same potions that enable them to power up. This is evident as Kagami and Félix are revealed to have been meeting each other halfway between Paris and London while in their space power-up forms.
Trivia[]
- Mylène references the time Ivan wrote a poem to her back in "Stoneheart".
- Mylène mentions not knowing a lot about Ivan's family, a topic that is later explored in "El Toro De Piedra".
- Marinette planned in taking Kim's Monkey Miraculous after he ended up causing Ondine's akumatization, but she ended up forgiving Kim, after she realizes that Nelson took advantage of Kim's naivety to break his relationship with Ondine, allowing him to keep his Miraculous.
- It marks the first time Marinette wanted to take back a Miraculous for a reason unrelated to the holder's usage of their Miraculous.
- This is the first time an akumatized villain under Chrysalis has been shown to be in different clothing in their mind while communicating with her, as Ondine is seen wearing her swimsuit.
- In "El Toro De Piedra", Raúl would also be seen in his El Toro outfit during the akumatization and in his bodyguard uniform prior to it, but he has the former after being de-akumatized.
- This is the first time Aqua Noir has received a transformation sequence.
- King Monkey's transformation sequence is reanimated in the new artstyle. Much like in "Party Crasher", Kim still starts off wearing his swimming gear rather than his civilian outfit.
- Ladybug becomes Dragonbug for the second time, following "Miracle Queen". By unifying with the Dragon Miraculous, while in her aqua form, she becomes Aqua Dragonbug.
- This is the first unification to be done in Season 6.
- This is also the second unification where the user also uses a power-up, following Cosmobugnoire (Bug Noire with the space power-up) in "Miraculous London". However, it is the first time the holder performs a unification while using a power-up.
- Cat Noir calls Ladybug "Bugaboo" for the first time since "Crocoduel" in Season 4.
References[]
- Kim uses a trash bin and a traffic sign to move through Syren's flood, like how Marinette did in "Syren".
- Marinette remembered her saddest event of seeing Adrien flying away to London in "Revolution".
- Ondine's new akumatized villain identity Sleeping Syren is also refers to what the titular villain in "Style Queen", called Adrien.
Allusions[]
- This episode references many elements from fairytales:
- Sleeping Syren's supervillain name and design is a clear reference, respectively, to The Sleeping Beauty, where the princess is placed on an eternal slumber until a prince would come to awake her with a kiss, and to The Little Mermaid, where the main character is a mermaid princess that falls in love with a human prince.
- There are also references to Disney's The Princess and the Frog, with Kim believing he would turn into a frog if he kissed Ondine and with Sleeping Syren's water knights turning people into frogs.
- The dragon, such as the one guarding Sleeping Syren, is an iconic obstacle in many fairytales.
- This may also reference Disney's Sleeping Beauty where the main villain, Maleficent, transforms into a dragon in the final battle.
- It could also be a reference to Dreamworks' Shrek, where Princess Fiona was trapped in a tower watched over by a giant dragon.
- Dragonbug makes a call out to many fairytales where the prince kisses the princess' lips without her consent.
- This is something of a contradiction to the events of "Dark Cupid", when Ladybug kissed Cat Noir to free him from the hate spell.
- If technically, the reason Ondine was akumatized in the first place was because she wanted a kiss from Kim, so in a way, permission was given.
- Kagami talking about couples sharing a "sweetheart cookie" references to Pocky Game, a Japanese party game where two people share a single Pocky stick, each nibbling from opposite ends simultaneously, aiming to reach the center.
Errors[]
- When the Miraculers fist-bump and say "Pound it" after their victory, Pegasus and Carapace are missing.
- When Miss Hound expresses concern because Minotaurox is not present, the Horse Miraculous symbol on Pegasus' zipper is missing.
- When Ladybug jumps away from the school, the shot changes right before the Ladybug transition appears.
- This was fixed in later airings of the episode.
- At the start of the de-evilization sequence, Ladybug's yo-yo isn't shining when it first drops down.
- Aqua Noir's tail fin is sometimes missing and the fins on his feet also sometimes lose their light and color.
- When Dragonbug first activate Wind Dragon, the scales from the Aqua power-up sequence are still present, but she isn't in her Aqua form anymore.
- In some shots the fountain pen holster on Rooster Bold's costume is miscolored gray, alongside the feather.
- When Ladybug throws the bag of cement to Cat Noir to use against the water dragon, he activates his power without saying a word.
- When Aquabug wants to get the Dragon Miraculous the fins on her waist clip into her body.
- When King Monkey is about to summon his Ruyi Jingu Bang in his transformation sequence, his tail clips through his body.
- In the version aired on Disney Channel, there's a dark blur effect over the screen when Ondine runs after Kim at the beginning of the episode. Due to it, she becomes partially transparent before the shot changes.
