- Alya, who is the occasional user of the Fox Miraculous, becomes its official holder under a new identity, Rena Furtive.
- Alya becomes the temporary user of the Ladybug Miraculous under the alias of Scarabella.
- Adrien, after temporarily giving up his role as Cat Noir, goes under the new identity of Cat Walker.
- Félix, under the identity of Adrien, becomes a temporary holder of the Dog Miraculous under the alias of Flairmidable.
- Like the seasons beforehand, season 4 features several story arcs that revolve around several characters:
- Marinette has 2 story arcs. The first one is her understanding of her newfound role as a guardian and the stress such responsibility is putting her under and how she keeps second guessing herself. She realizes however that she can't shut people out of her life for their own safety and is unable to bear this new task by herself. Over the course of the season she seems to get better and better at handling this new change in dynamic. Unfortunately, one tiny mistake has her lose everything and make her enemy even stronger. But even in her darkest hour, there are people out there who will help and support her through this new threat.
- Her second story arc revolves around the termination of her relationship with Luka and their reconciliation and reigniting her feelings for Adrien whilst understanding him more. Throughout this season she gets closer and closer to confessing that she likes him. Although she tries several convoluted plans to succeed, it slowly dawns on her that all she needs to do is be herself to him. And when the possibility of Adrien leaving is brought into effect, she decides that she is willing to do anything not to lose him.
- Adrien also has 2 story arcs as well. The main arc he has this season is observing that Ladybug seems to need him less and less on missions. Making him feel less valued to her. And after seeing the trust she shows other members of the team, he feels very out of the loop. He also realizes his usual tactics for his feelings towards Ladybug are not working and becoming an annoyance, so he decides to show her more of his true self than being a jokester all the time. After seeing Ladybug first hand hit her lowest point and her losing everything, he realizes that he needs to be her support and the one person who will always be with her. No matter what life throws at them.
- His second story arc revolves around him discovering how little agency over his life he has since his father decides everything for him. It's not until he is faced with the prospect of his own future that this realization finally hits him. Adrien does make it clear that he wants to think for himself and not turn out like his father. Adrien finally decides (albeit with a bit of influence) that he doesn't want to be a model anymore and wants control over what he does from now on and goes to confront his father about it. However, he doesn't get the chance to do so....Yet.
- Alya's story arc revolves around her having a better understanding of what it means to be Ladybug and how that changes your life. Beginning with Marinette telling her that she is the superheroine and the former helping the latter on more difficult missions when she is backed into a corner. She even has to go undercover when the safety of her family is at risk from Shadow Moth and it's shown how difficult she realizes lying to the people she cares about really is. She decides not to shut out the love of her life but when this ends up blowing her cover, she gives up being a hero for good. Putting the safety of those she cares about above anything else and letting go of being Rena Rouge until it is safe again.
- Gabriel's story arc revolves around the new power he has attained as Shadow Moth and how his conflict with Ladybug has evolved into a chess match with both sides having to adapt to make a move on the other. As episodes progress, Gabriel's desperation becomes more and more apparent the more that he loses to his enemies. His desperation leads him to create a risky scheme to guarantee his enemies will make a mistake. Which ultimately leads him to (not the way he intended) finally claim his first victory and gain the powers of 15 other Miraculous in exchange for the Peacock Miraculous. Losing his identity as Shadow Moth, but becoming the most powerful he has ever been!
- Luka's story arc focuses on him discovering that Marinette keeps secrets from him which leads to their relationship coming to an end because of the secrets. Luka still wishes to remain friends with Marinette and they reconcile, but it wasn't long until Luka finally discovers the secret Marinette was hiding and said knowledge allows Luka to save the universe.
- Kagami's story arc revolves around her terminating her relationship with Adrien after the latter lied to her. Then realizing how meant for each other he and Marinette truly are. The rest of her appearances in the season revolve around her helping Marinette to get her feelings across.
- Chloé's story arc revolves around her bitterness about her sister's arrival and subsequent popularity and how it adds to her anger over her expulsion from Team Miraculous and her inability to manipulate her parents into sending her to New York, thus worsening her personality and her treatment of others even more. Because of this, she starts to slowly lose the constants in her life.
- Juleka has a less significant story arc. For the majority of this season, she ends up just mumbling her words. It wasn't until she becomes a superheroine that she is finally able to speak up for herself.
- Felix's story arc revolves around him discovering exactly what his uncle is hiding after he becomes suspicious of him being Shadow Moth. Once he confirms his suspicions, he returns to take his uncle's miraculous for himself and as much knowledge about them as possible. Through discovering his comatose aunt, a case of mistaken identity and a shady trade that signs the death warrant of all of Paris, Felix is able to travel back to London as the new owner of the Peacock Miraculous. Although his ultimate intentions for all this still remain unknown.
- Jagged Stone has a mini-story arc where after the reveal that he is Luka and Juleka's father, he devotes more time to finally bond with his children and reach some form of reconciliation with Anarka.
- According to Thomas Astruc, this season features a "bomb" in every episode that are the "equivalent impacts of Cat Blanc".[90]
- Commemorating a hundred episodes of the show in total, the episode "Ephemeral" is said to be a must-watch for every fan.
- The following could be considered important plot points:
- "Truth" - Hawk Moth fuses the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculous, becoming Shadow Moth. Jagged Stone is revealed to be Luka and Juleka's father. Marinette and Luka also break up.
- "Lies" - Kagami breaks up with Adrien.
- "Gang of Secrets" - Marinette reveals to Alya that she is Ladybug, and Trixx uses his power without a holder for the first time.
- "Mr. Pigeon 72" - Marinette discovers that she can create Magical Charms to prevent people from being re-akumatized, while also gaining a new, upgraded suit.
- "Psycomedian" - While not having a significant impact on the story, for the first time, Ladybug gets her mind influenced by the titular villain in a permanent timeline, leading to Cat Noir taking charge. A new character based on an actual person is introduced and akumatized, namely Harry Clown who is based on Franck Dubosc.
- "Furious Fu" - Master Su-Han is introduced, some lore on the Order of Guardians is revealed, and the fact that every guardian should have a staff that tracks the boxes at all times, and Master Fu has one.
- "Sole Crusher" - Chloé is revealed to have a half-sister, Zoé Lee, who grew up in New York, Kaalki uses her power without a holder for the first time and Marinette tells Zoé (while she was akumatized as Sole Crusher) that she'll will always be there for her, which continues in future episodes.
- "Queen Banana" - Zoé becomes the new wielder of the Bee Miraculous, and Chloé ends her friendship with Adrien, which is false.
- "Gabriel Agreste" - Gabriel learns about the Magical Charms after Ladybug unawarely gives his sentimonster one while learning about the hidden potential the Miraculouses have and have not been recorded on the grimoire. Also, Félix begins to suspect that Gabriel is Shadow Moth.
- "Mega Leech" - Mylène becomes the wielder of the Mouse Miraculous.
- "Guiltrip" - Rose is revealed to have an unknown illness and becomes the wielder of the Pig Miraculous.
- "Crocoduel" - Juleka becomes the wielder of the Tiger Miraculous, the rest of the gang learns that Jagged Stone is Luka and Juleka's biological father, and Marinette becomes friends with Luka again.
- "Optigami" - Marinette allows Alya to keep the Fox Miraculous at all times and Shadow Moth realizes that Alya is in a special position with Ladybug.
- "Sentibubbler" - Alya tricks Shadow Moth into believing that she can never again become Rena Rouge.
- "Glaciator 2" - Cat Noir decides to try and cease his constant flirting with Ladybug after discovering how much it irritates her. Meanwhile, Adrien learns that Marinette is in love with someone, but remains unaware that it's him.
- "Hack-San" - Alya temporarily becomes the wielder of the Ladybug Miraculous, and Cat Noir discovers that Ladybug told someone her identity.
- "Rocketear" - Nino reveals to Adrien that he and Alya are Carapace and Rena Rouge, respectively. Also, Alya starts her new role as Rena Furtive and entrusts Nino with this information.
- "Wishmaker" - Luka learns the identities of Ladybug and Cat Noir. Also, Alec stops pretending to be someone he is not and starts being his true self.
- "Simpleman" - While not having a significant impact on the story, Marinette decides to try to stop using complicated plans to tell Adrien how she feels about him.
- "Qilin" - While not having a significant impact on the story, more of Sabine's personal life is revealed. She also gains an akumatized form for "Dearest Family"
- "Dearest Family" - Gabriel Agreste is able to find a way to destroy Ladybug's Magical Charms, allowing him to re-akumatize those who have received one ever since "Mr. Pigeon 72". Tikki uses her powers without a holder for the first time, which leads to the in-show debut of Astrocat.
- "Ephemeral" - This episode marks the in-show debut of Cosmobug, and the transformation sequence for Astrocat and Cosmobug. It also answers the question of "what would happen if Ladybug and Cat Noir found out about each other’s identities", but with Ladybug discovering Cat Noir's identity first. It is also revealed that if anyone wants to make a wish with the Miraculous, they would essentially erase the current universe and create a new one, but without knowing what kind of new universe they would create. Also, Sass uses his power without a holder for the first time.
- "Kuro Neko" - Adrien renounces his Miraculous, but is convinced by Plagg to use the Cat Miraculous under a new alias and appearance, becoming Cat Walker. At the end of the episode, Adrien becomes Cat Noir once again. Also, Nathalie begins to walk around again with mechanical support.
- "Penalteam" - Shadow Moth breaks through Chloé's Magical Charm, getting her re-akumatized. Sabrina, Marc, Nathaniel, and Ivan become the holders of the Dog, Rooster, Goat, and Ox Miraculous respectively. A new character based on an actual person is introduced, namely Didier Roustan. At the end of the episode, Chloé and Lila secretly form an alliance over their shared hatreds of both Marinette and Ladybug.
- "Risk (Shadow Moth's Final Attack - Part 1)" - Adrien is revealed to be leaving France for a trip around the world for several months. Félix finds out the true fate of his aunt Emilie when investigating Gabriel's secret identity as Shadow Moth.
- "Strikeback (Shadow Moth's Final Attack - Part 2)" - While Strikeback was going rampant, Ladybug had merged the Rabbit, Horse, and Ladybug Miraculouses simultaneously. Rena Furtive had come out of hiding and she is no longer the holder of the Fox Miraculous until Hawk Moth is defeated. Félix, while under the identity of Adrien, receives the Dog Miraculous. After Strikeback is defeated, Félix betrays Ladybug, and hands Gabriel every Miraculous in the Miracle Box in exchange for the Peacock Miraculous in which Felix is the new holder of the Peacock Miraculous and now Gabriel has all the Miraculous except for the Ladybug and Cat Miraculous.
- A new location, Swan Island, is confirmed to be visited, which first appears in "Wishmaker".[90]
- Even though it was originally announced that SAMG Animation is no longer part of the production of the series,[91] they'll animate some episodes of S4 with DQ Entertainment, Assemblage, and Artage Studio[92], making it four studios animating for this season.[93][94]
- According to the CEO of SAMG, Kim Soo-Hoon, the studio will animate only 5-6 episodes of S4 (Sole Crusher, Mega Leech, Crocoduel, Hack-San, Risk and Strikeback). Afterward, the studio will no longer work on the series.[95][96] However, the studio later had a hand in animating six episodes of Season 5.
- Symbiosis Studio, which was fired after season 3, was listed on the credits of RTS' release of "Lies", but was removed from all later releases, meaning that it's most likely an error or they had a hand in animating the episode prior to their firing.
- Indian studio DQ Entertainment animated only two episodes from season four before they went bankrupt. However, other studios that have participated in the show will continue to animate future episodes. And some former DQ Employees still work on the show.[97]
- The second official promotional poster for this season was made by Konrad Olchawa, a Polish freelance artist and a fan of Miraculous.[98]
- Season 4 was originally going to premiere in Fall 2020.[101] However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was delayed to March 2021 at Gloob Brazil.[102]
- This season will be the first to premiere on Disney+, as Netflix's contract for the show's international streaming rights ends after the third season.
- Season 4 has new opening credits compared to the previous seasons.[103][104]
- It features a re-recorded version of the It's Ladybug theme.
- It also featured all of the confirmed Miraculous wielders, provoking a further teaser from their debut episodes (Queen Banana, Mega Leech, Guiltrip, Crocoduel, Penalteam)
- It also features a redone version of the collage of Marinette's friends in the previous intros. Interestingly, some of the added images were taken from this very wiki, such as Luka's.
- Despite having a new theme song soundtrack, as well as additional new soundtracks in the episodes, the end credits theme heard from seasons 1, 2, and 3 still plays in this season.
- This is the second season where the first episode released worldwide is not the first episode in production order ("Furious Fu", which is 6th in production order).
- The first is season 2, which premiered with "Santa Claws", which is 26th in production order. However, unlike "Santa Claws", which was intended to be aired first, chronologically happens during season 1, uses the season 1 intro, and is a special, "Furious Fu" wasn't meant to be aired first and noticeably happens later in the season, featuring concepts (such as Shadow Moth and the Magical Charms) introduced in episodes earlier in the season.
- Thomas Astruc's quote about this season references Vegeta's line from Dragon Ball: "It's over 9,000!"
- Unlike the past 3 seasons, where the episodes often have no correlation to each other, this is the first season to have a serialized style, where the events of one episodes build off of the events of the previous episode.
- Unlike previous seasons, which had writers writing only certain episodes, all episodes were written by the same team (Thomas Astruc, Mélanie Duval, Fred Lenoir, and Sébastien Thibaudeau).[105]
- Similarly to seasons 2 and 3, due to broadcasting issues, many episodes of the season had their international premieres out of order:
- "Furious Fu" was aired before "Truth", "Mr. Pigeon 72", and "Psycomedian".
- "Guiltrip" was aired before "Mr. Pigeon 72", "Queen Banana" and "Mega Leech".
- "Optigami" was aired before "Gabriel Agreste", "Mega Leech" and "Crocoduel".
- "Rocketear" was aired before "Glaciator 2" and "Hack-San".
- "Mega Leech" was aired before "Gabriel Agreste".
- "Simpleman" was aired before "Psycomedian", "Gabriel Agreste" and "Glaciator 2".
- "Dearest Family" was aired before "Gabriel Agreste" and "Qilin".
- "Ephemeral" was aired before "Gabriel Agreste".
- "Gabriel Agreste" was aired before "Psycomedian".
- Both Ladybug's and Cat Noir's transformation sequences are barely seen throughout the season, both appearing only six times. This action was later repeated in Season 5.
- Ladybug's is seen in "Truth", "Gang of Secrets", "Psycomedian", "Furious Fu", "Sole Crusher", and "Queen Banana", with her being sad in the ones in "Truth", "Gang of Secrets", and "Furious Fu".
- Cat Noir's is seen in "Lies", "Psycomedian", "Gabriel Agreste", "Mega Leech", "Sentibubbler", and "Rocketear", with him being sad in the one in "Rocketear".
- This makes "Psycomedian" the only episode in which both transformation sequences are seen.
- This season removed or a used modified background sequence for Cataclysm the most in a single season with a total of 14 times following "Gang of Secrets", "Psycomedian", "Queen Banana", "Guiltrip", "Crocoduel", "Optigami", " Sentibubbler", "Hack-San", "Simpleman" "Qilin", "Dearest Family", "Kuro Neko", "Penalteam" and "Strikeback".
- Every episode of Season 4 has a dotted pattern on its end card, except "Rocketear" and "Penalteam".
- The same pattern is seen in Season 3's "Chameleon", "Reflekdoll", "Oni-Chan", "Miraculer", "Startrain", "The Puppeteer 2", "Félix", "Ladybug", "Heart Hunter", and "Miracle Queen".
- This is the first season to have:
- Zeno Robinson as the voice actor for Nino and Max.
- Lauren Landa as the voice actor of Sabrina and Pollen.
- Alejandro Saab as the voice actor for Marc.
- This is the last season to have Philece Sampler as the voice actor for Sabine Cheng and Olga Mendeleiev before her death on July 1, 2021. Anne Yatco takes over both roles starting with "Hack-San" (Sabine) and Season 5 (Ms. Mendeleiev).
- This is the first season to have episodes where Marinette is a minor character in the permanent timeline.
- "Lies" focused more on Adrien and his relationship with Kagami.
- "Gabriel Agreste" focused more on the Agreste family and Félix's return to Paris.
- "Guiltrip" focused more on Rose and Juleka.
- "Rocketear" focused more on Alya and Nino's relationship with Adrien discovering they are Rena Rouge and Carapace respectively.
- "Sentibubbler" focused more on Alya as she tricks Shadow Moth into believing she isn't Rena Rouge anymore.
- "Hack-San" focused more on Alya as she becomes the superhero Scarabella.
- "Ephemeral" focused on an alternative timeline version of her discovering Adrien is Cat Noir.
- "Kuro Neko" once again focused more on Adrien and his superhero identity becoming Cat Walker.
- This is also the third season following Season 2 and Season 3 to have episodes where Adrien is a minor character in the permanent timeline.
- "Truth" focused more on Marinette and her relationship with Luka.
- "Gang of Secrets" focused more on Marinette and her relationship with her friends and revealing her secret identity to Alya.
- "Mr. Pigeon 72" focused more on Marinette trying to patch up Kagami's relationship with Adrien while expanding the limits of her powers resulting in the creation of Magical Charms.
- "Furious Fu" focused more on Marinette reuniting with Fu and Marianne while also meeting Su-Han.
- "Sole Crusher" focused more on Marinette meeting Zoé for the first time.
- "Guiltrip" focused more on Rose and Juleka.
- "Crocoduel" focused more on Marinette patching up her relationship with Luka while Juleka becomes the superhero Purple Tigress.
- "Optigami" focused more on the friendship between Marinette and Alya.
- "Sentibubbler" focused more on Alya as she tricks Shadow Moth into believing she isn't Rena Rouge anymore.
- "Qilin" focused more on Marinette and Sabine's mother-daughter bond.
- "Dearest Family" focused more on the Dupain-Chengs and Tikki's cravings.
- "Ephemeral" focused on an alternative timeline version of himself revealing his identity to Ladybug before getting akumatized into the titular villan.
- "Penalteam" focused more on the introduction of four new members of the French Miraculous Superhero Team: Miss Hound, Caprikid, Rooster Bold, and Minotaurox.
- Seasons 4 and 5 are tied for the second highest number of yet Lucky Charms summoned by Ladybug in a season with 30.
