Description[]
Mainly built of cut stone from the old quarries of Paris, Notre-Dame is a religious building of Gothic architecture. Like most French cathedrals, it was built on a Latin cross plan.
Numerous gargoyles and various statues adorn the exterior of the cathedral.
Towers[]
The two towers of the cathedral culminate at 69 meters high each. Being the bell towers, it houses the bells of the building. These towers were built on the same plan, but they are not twins, the north tower is wider and thicker than the south tower.
West facade[]
The entrance has three portals with two doors each. Above these is the west rose window of the building, the smallest, which represents the Virgin Mary, the labors of the months, the signs of the zodiac, the virtues and vices as well as the prophets.
Side facades[]
The side facades were made with the construction of large buttresses that supported the walls of the nave, and also served as a drainage channel for water from the roofs.
Many stained glass windows adorn these two side facades, but especially the two large 13-meter rose windows that adorn the transept.
