Read transcript
I can't stay in Paris. I'd be a threat to everyone I love here because I know the secret identities of Ladybug and Cat Noir.

Luka Couffaine, Migration

"Migration" is a Season 5 episode of the series, Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. As based on the series' production order specifically, "Migration" is the 13th written and produced episode of Season 5. It is also the 117th written and produced episode of the series, overall.

Synopsis[]

There are many sides to Luka. Sure, he's Juleka's twin brother, but he's also like a big brother to his friends, including Marinette and Adrien. They both like to seek his advice, as Luka always has an inspiring quote to give them. Lastly, Luka is the guitarist of the band Kitty Section, and the son of a celebrity. And this side of Luka's will pique the interest of label owner Bob Roth, who's ready for anything to make money! But Bob Roth underestimates Luka, who's ready for anything to defend his values and his friends.

Luka piques special interest in Bob Roth.

Plot[]

The episode starts off with Marinette rushing to the Couffaine houseboat Liberty, where she awkwardly greets all of her friends. She then rushes off to Luka, stuttering over her words, and then finally says that she needs to talk about the new stickers that she designed for Kitty Section. Luka then smiles at her, and creates an excuse to allow him to talk to Marinette in private. Then, while the two are in Luka's room Marinette starts talking about her problems; she admits that she struggles to find the right words when she's with Adrien, but also struggles with herself. Marinette pauses for a moment and then covers her face with her hands, stating that she's the worst because she is talking about her love life to Luka when she broke his heart. But Luka then proceeds to look down at his guitar, and then kindly reassures Marinette. The conversation ends with him saying "You know where to find me".

While Marinette is leaving the room, she sees Adrien, holding a keyboard, walking towards her. As they both greet each other, she attempts to walk past him, but ends up being stuck in between Adrien's Keyboard, and the wall. For a brief moment, the camera changes to Luka's perspective, but Marinette and Adrien quickly fade into the costumes of Ladybug and Cat Noir; reminding the audience that Luka knows the superheroes secret identities. After Adrien tries talking to Marinette, Marinette hurriedly runs away, still feeling "unsafe" around Adrien. Adrien then enters the room, stuttering over his words, just to say that he believes his keyboard is faulty. Luka smiles, and then the scene changes to a similar scene from earlier, except this time Adrien is sat opposite Luka, in Marinette's place. Adrien starts by thanking Luka; because of him, he found his "inner tune" and his love for Marinette, but he was scared that Marinette still couldn't find hers. Luka then reassures Adrien, and the conversation ends with him saying "You know where to find me".

Out of nowhere, the window behind Luka pops open, with Jagged Stone behind it! Jagged Stone stutters over his words, and then finally states that he has a "super important question about um this guitar pick". Luka smiles and then the scene changes to a similar scene from earlier, Luka is on the bed, and his father is sat opposite him. Jagged Stone then admits that he wants to become a better father, but he has no clue how to. Luka then reassures him, saying that all he needs to do is spend time with his family. The conversation then ends with Luka saying "You know where to find me, Dad". (do you see a pattern)

A familiar voice starts shouting Jagged's name. Luka's father then proceeds to exit through the window, after realising that Penny was looking for him. Penny then enters the room, in a rush, stating that she needs to find jagged because Bob Roth wants him to be recording for a new album. Luka then smiles, and the scene changes to the two sitting on the bed, facing each other. Penny then admits that she is in love with Luka's father, but she has no clue why. She then states a long list of childish things about Jagged, and why "he's a walking disaster". Luka then reassures her, saying that love is always unexplainable, and that's probably why she's confused. But when Luka is about to say "you know where to find me", Bob Roth interrupts him and starts shouting at Penny, bombarding her with questions regarding Jagged's whereabouts. Penny then admits that she is looking for Jagged, and she expected to find him with his son. Amazed by the fact that Jagged Stone has a son, Bob Roth walks towards Luka, laughing at the fact that "only a fool" would have a kid with that "good for nothing".

Unexpectedly, Anarka appears behind Bob, saying that the "fool" would be her. Angrily, she stated that Bob had boarded her ship without permission, and the setting suddenly changes to a cartoonish scene where Bob Roth is thrown off of the boat into the Seine, whilst wearing a duck floatie. The scene quickly changes, and the band Kitty Section start rehearsing one of their many songs, but now the focus is drawn towards Luka entering the surface of the boat, the former then proceeds to look at Adrien and Marinette, who are sitting by themselves, separate from the group. Like the scene from earlier, Marinette and Adrien slowly fade into the costumes of Ladybug and Cat Noir, again reminding the audience that Luka knows the identities of Paris' beloved superheroes.

Out of nowhere, Bob Roth appears on the edge of the boat, and he, unexpectedly starts clapping at Kitty Section's performance, and then offers the group to sign a contract with him. The group suddenly pauses, but then Luka bravely speaks up, stating that Bob Roth had already offered them a contract, but he never went through with the deal. Unconvincingly, Bob tries to say that he never forgot about the deal and that he was just waiting for the right time, but before he can finish, Anarka comes and throws him off of the boat, with the same scene from earlier. Luka then confronts his mother, kindly saying that she should try to give him a chance.

Moments later, Bob Roth walks back on board the ship, agreeing with Luka, on how "everyone deserves a chance", and "anyone can change". To prove his point, he admits that he wasn't very honest in the past, but now he has changed and wants to sign a real contract with the group. He starts to rant about how this new contract will "fill their pockets", and "protect them no matter what". Out of excitement, the members of the band start happily squealing about how they are to have their first album with a record company. The scene quickly changes to a short montage of each band member happily signing the contracts, until Bob Roth interrupts them and says "You're all fired except for Jagged Junior" while putting on a diving suit. In confusion, Luka stated that he would never work for both without his friends and that he can't force him to do his work.

With a cheeky smile, Bob replies saying that he obviously can, and that's what the contracts were for. Without a moment to pass, each member of the band stares at their contracts, as each of them gasps in unison. Without a care in the world about what is going to happen next, Bob starts to tease and mock the group, and the former says that "they should've listened to the old pirate", and "never should've signed". He then proceeds to put his swimming goggles over his eyes, and puts his thumbs up, signaling to Anarka that he's ready to get thrown off the boat. The cartoonish scene from earlier then appears, proceeded by the group reading over the contract, and realizing what they had just done. The scene quickly zooms into Luka, who is quickly reading over the contract, and he proceeds to admit that everything is his fault.

In Monarch's lair, with Monarch evilizing a megakuma to send to Luka. The scene changes to Luka, almost getting akumatized via his guitar. To avoid the akumatization, Luka immediately tried to resist, only to destroy his guitar to completely resist. Out of confusion on why he was resisting so strongly, Monarch soon finds out that Luka knows the secret identities of Ladybug and Cat Noir. Determined, he decided to akumatize Bob instead, who was frustrated because Luka refuses to work with him. Now transformed into Gold Record with the power of the Horse Miraculous as Pegasus' Voyage, that he teleports back onboard the ship and attempts to hit Luka with his record, but Rose jumps in the way and was hit instead. Rose, now as a record begins to sing he love of all her friends. Gold Record sends to Rose's record to space. Gold Record then hits Anarka with his record and she turns into a record and starts singing as well. Luka tells all his friends to hide below deck, except Marinette, whom he tells to hide in the cabin. Marinette transforms into Ladybug. Gold Record then also sends Anarka's record to space.

Now below deck Adrien starts worrying about Marinette and whether she's been captured. Luka tells Adrien that he can't help Marinette, but Cat Noir can, heavily implying he knows Cat Noir's identity and proceeds to place Adrien in the closet to hide. Gold Record teleports below deck and attempts once again to hit Luka with his record but this time Juleka jumps in the way and thus was transformed into a record and starts to sing. All the teens stare in awe as she sings, but Gold record still sends her to space. The villain almost hits Luka with the record but he was pulled out of the way by Ladybug.

Cat Noir falls out of the closet and Gold Record takes another throw at Luka but hit a rubber duck toy, which transformed and Gold Record sends it to his record wall. Gold Record then proceeds to chase Cat Noir around Paris via teleportation and continuously tries to hit him with his record. He hits a pigeon with the record then continues to pursue Cat Noir.

Ladybug and Luka are under a bridge and as she uses her Lucky Charm, and asks Luka if he's willing to risk himself to defeat the supervillain. Luka obliges, but also warns Ladybug that if he's caught he'll reveal everything. She brushes off his concern and Luka then proceeds to call Ladybug "Marinette" but she fails to notice until he calls her "Marinette" a second time, much to her shock and horror. She asks if he knows Cat Noir's identity too, then realizes the full risk, but moves forward with the plan regardless.

Luka begins playing guitar on the Eiffel Tower, drawing Gold Record's attention. Ladybug messages Cat Noir not to intervene as it's "part of the plan". Gold Record teleports behind Luka, and finally strikes his initial target, who transforms into a record and begins to sing. Ladybug uses her pencil lucky charm along with a make-shift miniature bow and shoots Gold Record's record out of the his hand and directly toward Cat Noir, who then cataclysms the record just before Luka's song reveals their identities. Ladybug purifies the megakuma and uses her Miraculous Ladybug, returning everything to how it was.

At Liberty, where Ladybug attempts to give Bob his magical charm, but he takes the contract papers for Cat Noir who recovered them after he call the magical charm "a trinket" as he drops it, refuse to take it. Bob proceeds to try to take advantage of "Jagged Jr" so that he can make lots of money and attempts to use Ladybug and Cat Noir to protect him from Anarka. The two superheroes leaves and Anarka throws Bob off the boat once more.

Back in Monarch's lair, where he declares he'll get Luka to reveal the heroes' identities then shifts back to the boat, where Luka rips up the contracts. He then tells the Kitty Section group that he cannot stay in Paris because he knows Ladybug's and Cat Noir's identity, Marinette and Adrien try to reassure him that Ladybug and Cat Noir will keep him safe, but to no avail. He tells the group not to worry about Kitty Section because his sister, Juleka is so talented. Anarka tells Luka he can't leave without an adult, then Jagged jumps in and says that he will go with Luka. Anarka doesn't believe Jagged is willing to give up all his fame for his son, Jagged tells her that he already has and that he tore up his contracts. He asks for a chance to be a real father to his son and Penny offers to help Luka with his schoolwork. Anarka agrees to let Luka leave.

Trivia[]

  • Internationally, this episode first premiered in Brazil on Gloob.
  • The episode shares its name with the concept of the Horse Miraculous.
    • The episode reveals how the power of Voyage is used for attacking, by allowing the user to appear from anywhere they can fight and attack from anywhere. Then, once that's done enough times the opponent will be totally exhausted.
    • Voyage also has one more weakness before the portal opens and something or someone can go through it gives off a sound that can alert someone to their allies or enemies' location.
    • Besides the use of its power, Voyage, there are some characters going on a migration, with that ones being Luka, Jagged and Penny who left Paris after Monarch realizes the former knows Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities.
    • The concept of migration was also applied in a few other episodes and people:
      • In "Feast", Master Fu migrated to avoid detection and then with his lover to London after he surrendered his title.
      • With Zoé moving from New York to Paris to be with her family in "Sole Crusher".
      • How the kwamis, their miraculouses and guardians migrated all over the world to protect it from crisis.
      • When it came Gabriel akumatizing different victims in various episodes.
      • Before Jagged gave up his music career he traveled all over the world for it.
    • For the ways of love for various people:
      • In "Animan", Nino had a crush on Marinette before he migrated to his true love with Alya.
      • In "Dark Cupid", Kim had a crush on Chloe, then he moved to Ondine in "Syren".
      • From "Evilustrator", Nathaniel had a crush on Marinette, then to Ladybug and Marc.
      • Like how Marinette's first crush was Kim in "Derision", she moved onto Adrien, then Luka and then Cat Noir just to get back to Adrien unknown to her that both boys are the same person.
      • And the same for Adrien as he started his love advances for Ladybug, then moved onto Kagami and then to Marinette just to arrive at the same situation as her.
    • The Horse Miraculous reminds people to be quick on your feet as well as your mind, think about others when in those situations (knowing when to run and when you can't) and be aware that the fastest way isn't always the best.
      • Max Kante as the current Horse Miraculous holder, Pegasus and with Voyage, he's the fastest of Team Miraculous as well as with his mind in calculations and numbers.
      • In "Pixelator", such as Marinette took a shortcut to do her task but it backfired.
        • Ladybug is the fastest when dealing with akumatized villains, sentimonsters and plans on the battlefield.
        • Marinette when she tried to run from her feelings out of fear of her or someone she cares about getting hurt again.
        • When Ladybug's problem piled up she ran away from Cat Noir out of fear for him but realized she should've ran to him and yet, she mentally understood and accepted things a lot faster than him.
      • Gabriel obsessively believed that the Miraculouses and the wish were quickest way to deal with his problems but he forgot that it was using the way he did he ended up right back where he started.
      • "Prime Queen", when it came to rescuing Chloe, Cat Noir easily accepted that Prime Queen's methods was the fastest as they didn't have all night to search the Metro Station system for Chloe.
      • Such as Ladybug and Cat Noir when they faced Hawk Moth they knew they couldn't run if it meant leaving everyone else behind nor he or those akumatized were going to hunt them down no matter where they went which was confirmed true in the "Last Day".
      • Despite Gabriel and Colt using the Peacock Miraculous as the fastest means to create their families it was also the most dangerous aside from the jewel being damaged they should have been aware of other considerations that could've gone wrong.
      • Gabriel ran away in fear of everyone knowing the truth and unable to control the outcome.
      • Master Fu tried to run away from his sentimonster and fear of his mistake but soon realized it was pointless to run and he had to face it.
      • Felix has he took the Peacock Miraculous and fled leaving the heroes and the people of Paris to deal with the consequences and also by extension made Duusu leave the rest of his kwami family behind.
      • By Colt, Chloe, Gabriel and Lila, because of their actions they continued to run away or be in denial from the consequences they created until it caught with them to the point where they had nowhere to go.
    • Like a horse and many other creatures including humans one of their abilities is speed but sometimes it won't mean anything if they can't move, don't know where they're going, but even if they run some might not be able to stop at least without help or become lost once they do in more ways than one.
      • "Miraculous Shanghai", Marinette ended up physical lost in Shanghai.
      • Such as Marinette in "Crocoduel", where she figured Alya's plan to get her to talk to Luka.
      • From "Wishmaker", where she and Adrien were indecisive about their futures.
      • Gabriel was emotional lost without Emilie.
      • In "Ephemeral", when Pegasus couldn't go through the voyage power.
      • In "Deflagration", as Marinette found Alya paralyzed in a small space.
  • Luka is shown to have become a major confident to many characters like Marinette, Adrien, Jagged and Penny, who ask him for his wise advice that are able to calm their hearts and clear any doubt they are having.
  • It's revealed that Jagged and Penny are dating.
    • This confirms that Jagged cheated on Anarka, which is probably why he left her family and Luka.
  • Luka is the fifth character to not get fully akumatized after being infected by an Akuma, following Chloé in "Miraculer", Marinette in "Ladybug", "Elation" and "Derision", Sabine in "Ladybug" and Félix in "Gabriel Agreste".
    • He is almost akumatized into Silencer, his first akumatized identity. If Monarch had managed to successfully akumatize Luka, it would have been the second time he'd have turned into Silencer.
  • This episode sets yet another consequence from the events of "Miracle Queen", as Hawk Moth/Monarch knew that Luka was the current Snake Miraculous holder as Viperion, and is fully aware of Second Chance (as revealed in "Party Crasher"), so it's possible Monarch guessed that Luka knew Ladybug and Cat Noir's identities from the erased alternative timelines from "Wishmaker".
    • Following from the events of "Sentibubbler", this episode is the second time where a team member is put in danger because of Chloé's actions.
    • Ironically the same thing would've happen to Chloe as she too would have to leave Paris (along on with the Bee Miraculous) on the notion that her identity was exposed or if she made her mind to stay then someone else would have to the power in place.
  • This is the second time Bob Roth gets akumatized, following "Ephemeral". This time however he gets akumatized into a new form, Gold Record.
  • Bob Roth is the second character to have refused a Magical Charm from Ladybug. The first to do so was Chloé in "Queen Banana", and Kagami became the third in "Protection".
    • When he said, "Again" and that "the Magical Charm didn't work", could imply that Bob was akumatized back in "Ephemeral" and saw for himself the Magical Charm didn't work.
  • Not counting episodes which don't have end cards, this is the third episode to have an end card in which Marinette and Adrien don't appear, following "The Collector" and "Malediktator".
    • These three, alongside "Félix" and "Multiplication" are the only ones in which Marinette doesn't appear.
    • It's later followed by "Intuition".
      • It's and the one of "Malediktator" are also the only ones out of the four to not feature Gabriel in any way.
  • This is the fourth time Monarch is listening for targets, after "Risk", "Jubilation" and "Transmission".
  • This episode bears resemblances to many episodes:
    • From "Crocoduel", the akumatized object was a record disc but unlike the former episode this one was comprised of multiple pieces combined into one and yet both records were destroyed the same way: Cat Noir's Cataclysm.
    • Then, in "Captain Hardrock", the scene where Luka and Marinette first met is reused.
    • Similar to "Silencer", both akumatizations were caused by Bob Roth.
    • Like Chloe in "Miracle Queen", Bob Roth teamed with Monarch out of selfish actions that allowed Gabriel to take advantage of the situation resulting in both Master Fu renouncing his title as Guardian and his memories to protect Ladybug, Cat Noir, and the Miraculous as well as Luka moving out of Paris to keep the duo safe.
    • However unlike Alix in "Evolution", Luka's whole family and friends knew about his departure, and shared a hug before he left.
    • Bob also repeated Ladybug's, "Here kitty kitty" line from "Reverser".
  • Luka is the second member of the French Miraculous superhero team that had to be sent away to protect the team following Alix in "Evolution".
    • Marinette voiced having Ladybug and Cat Noir willingly protect Luka, is callback to "Reunion".
  • It is revealed that Penny found out that Jagged has two children offscreen.
  • The episode refers to famous late rockstar David Bowie's song "Rebel Rebel" and several famous album covers, such as Nirvana's Nevermind.
  • Rose's song sounds similar to Toto's "Rosanna".
  • Gold Record says "In space, no one will hear you sing", which is a reference to the tagline of the film Alien. A similar reference was made by Mr. Pigeon in "Miraculous New York" and Monarch in "Intuition".
  • This is the third time that a portal destination created by Voyage has been in space, following "Miracle Queen" and "Strikeback".
  • Luka is the second akumatized victim to break his akumatized object by himself, following Penalty in "Penalteam".
    • However, he broke his before he was fully transformed, while Penalty did so when she was already akumatized.
  • Marinette and Adrien find out that Luka knows their secret identities, which he learned in "Wishmaker".
    • Similar to Rena in "Strikeback", despite Luka not knowing the identities of his other allies along with Ladybug and Cat Noir (except for Alix, Kim, Sabrina, Max and Kagami) they all know that he knows he's been hiding the secret of Ladybug's and Cat Noir's identities.
  • The way Luka and the others signed Bob's contract without reading it is similar to how all of Monarch's victims agreed to his deal without knowing what they were getting into.
  • This is the fourth time Marinette kisses Luka on the cheek, after "Frozer", "Heart Hunter" and "Miraculous New York".
  • Bob Roth says "I'll make his (Luka's) little friends' lives hell", marking one of the few times profanity is used in the show.
    • However, some broadcasters instead replaced the line with "a living nightmare".
  • This is the fifth time a character sings outside of a performance or recording, following "Princess Fragrance", "Befana", "Santa Claws" and "Deflagration".
    • Anarka, Juleka and Luka sing for the first time.
  • Luka ripping up Bob's contract is similar to how he rips Harry's script from "Psycomedian".
    • This is the third episode someone gets akumatized when something is ripped after "Reverser" and "Psycomedian".
  • At the endcard of the episode, Luka is shown in pictures describing places where he, Jagged and Penny are or are passing through. One of those pictures show a place called Pico da Neblina, the highest peak in Brazil above the sea level, located at the state of Amazonas. This means that Luka may be or may have passed through Brazil.
  • This is Bob Roth's Last appearance in Season 5 as he never appeared after this episode for the rest of the season.
  • This is the third time Tikki doesn't make an appearance, following "Gabriel Agreste" and "Guiltrip".
  • This is the fifth episode of seasons 4 and 5 not to have a polka-dotted pattern on its end card, following "Rocketear", "Penalteam", "Determination", and "Reunion".
  • When sensing Luka's despair, Monarch remarks another person is suffering due to Bob Roth's greed, likely referencing "Silencer", "Mr. Pigeon 72", "Psycomedian", and "Queen Banana".
  • This episode marks the second time that Gabriel isn't featured in the episode in Season 5, after "Determination", and followed by "Derision".

Errors[]

  • Much like in "Truth", Luka's skin tone and hair colour fluctuate greatly throughout the episode.
  • When Marinette first arrives on the Liberty, Juleka's hair is slightly deformed.
  • Marc's model quickly slides into the scene when Bob Roth appears on the boat the third time.
  • While Marinette is talking to Luka, Marinette's torso is deformed in one shot.
  • When Luka is talking with Adrien in his room, Luka's neck is deformed in one shot.
  • When Monarch taps the Horse Miraculous ring to transfer its power to Gold Record, it glows orange instead of brown.
  • Adrien and Luka somehow know Gold Record's name even if he didn't say it.
  • When Cat Noir is done talking to Ladybug on his staff, the screen disappears instantly instead of sliding closed.
  • Monarch mispronounces "hook" in his closing monologue, making it rhyme with "fluke".
  • When Monarch is akumatizing Luka, the screen gets darker for no reason.
  • When Bob complains at Luka for ripping up his contract, his alliance is missing.
