Max Kanté[6] is a supporting character of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. He is a former student in Miss Bustier's class at Collège Françoise Dupont.

In "Gamer", when he lost his place in the school video game tournament because of Marinette Dupain-Cheng, he was akumatized by Hawk Moth and became Gamer, a video game-themed supervillain who controlled a huge fighting robot.

In "Startrain", in order to save his mother, who was akumatized into the titular villain, and his friends, Max received the Horse Miraculous from Ladybug. When the Miraculous is inhabited by Kaalki, Max becomes Pegasus, a horse-themed superhero with the power of Migration who helps Ladybug and Cat Noir during "particularly difficult missions" in the third season and beyond.

In "Gamer 2.0", after being turned down by everybody to play his creative video game, Max was reakumatized into Gamer, with the new title Gamer 2.0, getting a new ability to create a video game in real life.

After the events of "Strikeback", Max was temporarily unable to become Pegasus after Monarch managed to steal the Horse Miraculous along with all the others contained in the Chinese Miracle Box from Ladybug's yo-yo.

In "Re-creation", after Ladybug recovered the stolen Miraculous and reforged them following Monarch's defeat, Max was given back the Horse Miraculous permanently and reunited with Kaalki.

Appearance

Physical appearance

Max is a short slender teenage boy, who has a medium-brown complexion, coily-kinky brown hair, and moderate tangelo eyes. He is the only male character in Miraculous with realistic eyelashes (all the others appear to be wearing eyeliner).

In the flashback of "Derision" he has an afro and wears blue and green shirt just like the 8th grade picture in Reflekta.

Civilian attire

Max wears black-rimmed glasses, a light green shirt, and pale, light grayish gamboge and brown checkered jeans. He also has suspenders with a light brilliant tangelo line between two grayish amber lines and silver buckles, along with pale, light grayish cobalt blue sneakers and a blue watch on his right wrist.

As Gamer

As Gamer, he had grayish purple skin and vivid amaranth eyes. His glasses became butterfly-shaped and the glass had a light green tint. He wore a black skin-tight bodysuit with a head cover over his head and neck and a small green circle on his chest and three thin green stripes around his waist, each forearm, and each lower leg.

As Pegasus

As Pegasus, Max's hair is longer, colored light brownish gray and braided in multiple locks that are tied back with a black headband, and his legs are muscular. He wears a deep brown high-mandarin-collared full-body outfit with multiple grayish tangelo outlines, dark grayish vermilion bracelets and anklets, and a small, light gray horseshoe on his chest. The Horseshoe is on his upper back when not in use. He has two wings that come from the anklets and sneakers, which resemble the wings Hermes has on his sandals.

For more of Max's outfits and designs, see Max Kanté/Designs.

Personality

Horrificator 073

Max reading of the time the film crew has left.

Max is a gamer and a fan of technology.[7] He is smart, especially when it comes to mathematics, as seen when he figures out how fast Kim needs to be to make it to Pont des Arts right before Chloé Bourgeois gets there in "Dark Cupid". He tends to be carried away with his knowledge, often over-explaining things with further detail than necessary and occasionally revealing something that was supposed to be a secret. Max is also friendly, helping his friends with knowledge and support. In "Gamer", when he loses his place in the competition for which he trained a whole year, he sportingly congratulates Marinette and Adrien before he quickly leaves the room. Once outside, he starts rambling to himself about how unfair his situation was, and it isn't until after his akumatization and Marinette offering up her spot to him in the competition that he perks up.

As Pegasus, Max is also brave as well as shown to be very polite and works well with others seen in "Party Crasher".

As Gamer, he stopped at nothing to show everyone that he was the best gamer, even turning people into experience points that helped him level up. Additionally, the resentment he held towards Marinette turned into hatred, resulting in him specifically targeting her for a brief period. In "Gamer 2.0", nevertheless, he could be humble when admitting defeat.

Abilities

As a civilian

Max is very intelligent, being excellent at knowing facts, statistics, and calculations. He is also very skilled in playing video games and he has one of the highest scores in the entire school at playing Ultimate Mecha Strike III.

Max's intelligence was shown in his inventions that are revealed in "Robostus": an anti-virus flash drive and Markov, a highly-functional robot that has developed emotions on its own. Max is even capable of creating his own video game based on the akumatized villains.

As Pegasus

Pegasus has much more enhanced skills, such as speed, agility, and strength, and he is almost invulnerable to physical damage. He is also very skilled at utilizing the Horseshoe during close combat.

His special power, Voyage, allows him to open a portal that he can travel through and exit at any location he desires.

As Gamer

As Gamer, he piloted a giant fighting robot designed after MX-01 from Ultimate Mecha Strike III. The robot could shoot a laser beam that would transform any people and vehicle it hit into floating green orbs that serve as experience points. By absorbing these experience points the robot would level up.

  • Level 1: A simple floating black pyramid with a green eye.
  • Level 2: Added two tall tentacle-like legs.
  • Level 3: The robot became more human-like and it gained the power to perform special moves, such as firing electricity and missiles, creating a force field, and spinning like a drill.
  • Level 4: The final level, but its form was never seen.

Gamer was able to "save his last level" and respawn the robot if it got destroyed.

As Gamer 2.0

Gamer 2.0 controlled a massive pyramid, which was a real world video game inside. The game pitted player against player and the playable avatars were past akumatized supervillains.

After each fight, both the winning avatars' akumatized object and the losing avatars' akumatized object were added to the winning players arsenal where they could later be selected as a power-up in the final battle, giving the player access to those villains' superpowers. During the final battle, Gamer 2.0 can change into any of the previous supervillains.

Relationships

Lê Chiến Kim/King Monkey

DC S01EP10 (82)

Max and Kim doing a high five to celebrate their Valentines' Day plan.

Max is best friends with Kim. They are usually seen around each other and sit next to each other in class. Max supports Kim, helping him prepare to express his feelings to Chloé in "Dark Cupid".

In "Party Crasher", the two work together with their friends to have a party for Adrien. They both joined Nino's resistance in "Illusion".

In "Derision", despite the them being friends Max didn't take too kindly to Kim's pranks.

He meets Kim's alter-ego, King Monkey as his alter-ego, Pegasus and the two work well together continuing to do so in "Ephemeral" and "Penalteam".

Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug

TG (507)

Marinette giving up her position to Max.

Generally, Max and Marinette get along nicely. In "Gamer", he becomes upset with Marinette for beating him at Ultimate Mecha Strike III and becoming the second student to go to the tournament, which he tries to hide but fails to over time. After she offers up her place for him, though, he gains a lot more respect for her, and he encourages her when she ends up being his partner. Max appreciates Marinette's bravery and compassion, grateful for her trying to get Markov back for him in "Robostus", and he cares enough about her to team up with other students to try fighting off the titular villain and her minions to protect her in "Befana". During "Gamer 2.0", Max becomes sad that Marinette, like everyone else, is too busy to try out his new game. After he is deakumatized, Max took her parent's offer to play his new game with them and soon Marinette joins.

Max sees Ladybug as a wonderful protector of Paris, and he appreciates her greatly. In "Robostus", he takes her advice that he should forgive Markov because people sometimes struggle to control their emotions.

During "Startrain", Max accepted Ladybug's help request to stop his akumatized mother; when the temperatures inside the train were getting too dangerous for him, Ladybug offered him the Horse Miraculous, and he accepted it, becoming the hero Pegasus, and he followed Ladybug's instructions and lead faithfully as well as in "Party Crasher". After his mother and friends were saved, he returned the Horse Miraculous to her. As of "Mega Leech", "Ephemeral" and "Penalteam", he continues to answer her call until "Strikeback", when the heroine loses his Miraculous but like the others Max bared no ill will towards Ladybug and instead joined the resistance to show his growing support.

Markov

Robostus 064

Max giving Markov a fist pump.

Max cherishes Markov, both as his creation and his close friend. He fully supports that Markov has his own personality and emotions, and he enjoys working together with him. When Denis Damoclès confiscates Markov, Max worries about his robot's reaction to being separated from him for the first time. While Markov is akumatized into Robostus, Max is alarmed by his friend's villainous actions, and he defies him and his wishes to become human by freeing Ladybug and Cat Noir before their Miraculouses are taken, telling Robostus that he likes him the way he was before akumatization and he doesn't want him harming the heroes. Once Markov is back to normal, Max is initially unsure and worried about reactivating Markov, but after Ladybug encourages him to forgive Markov because he cares about him, Max goes through with it and warmly greets him. The two continue spending time together as seen in "Syren" and "Party Crasher".

Kaalki

Startrain (426)

Max meets Kaalki.

When Kaalki and Max met for the first time in "Startrain", he was friendly with her, and only vaguely surprised at the sight of a kwami for the first time; but Kaalki, being rather picky about holders, immediately asked him if he was someone glorious and famous, only stopping when Ladybug assured her that Max was fit for the job.

As of "Party Crasher" and so on, the two continue on working together in helping their allies against Hawk Moth until "Strikeback" when she got captured by Monarch.

Nino Lahiffe/Carapace

In "Horrificator" Max helps Nino with his film by calculating the hours they have left to film it, as well as helping his classmate put together a boys-only party for Adrien by providing Nino with the dolls they need to "bribe" Placide I.T., and making the party itself a bit more exciting in "Party Crasher".

He and Nino have met as their alter egos in "Party Crasher", "Mega Leech" and "Ephemeral".

Luka Couffaine/Viperion

Max doesn't know Luka too well, even though Luka attended the boys-only party that Max helped Nino put together for Adrien in "Party Crasher".

When they assume their alter egos, Pegasus shows concern for Viperion when he gets captured by Party Crasher and works with him in "Ephemeral".

    • In the Irish dub, his name is changed to Marcás; Irish for Marcus.
    • His family is from Mali, although the ethnic group is unknown.[8]
  • In "The Bubbler" and "Lady Wifi", Max appears without glasses.
    • Thomas Astruc noted the instance in the former episodes as an animation mistake.[9]
  • In his first appearances in the Korean musical Ladybug, Max wears a different outfit, which includes a purple t-shirt with white lettering printed on the front underneath a green and black plaid hooded jacket.
    • In later performances, Max's outfit is mostly identical to his show appearance, excluding his glasses and including a black hat.
  • A scarlet version of Gamer reappeared in the two-part special event "Heroes' Day".[10]
  • A statue of Gamer appears in the Musée Grévin in "The Puppeteer 2".
  • In the French dub, his superhero name is "Pegase" which is French for Pegasus.
  • Following Alya Césaire, Nino Lahiffe, Chloé Bourgeois, Nathalie Sancoeur, and Luka Couffaine, he is the sixth person to become a Miraculous holder and akumatized villain, excluding Gabriel Agreste, who akumatized himself.
  • He and Carapace are the only Miraculous holders who wears glasses and keep them even after transformation.
    • This is due to the fact that the Horse Miraculous are said glasses.
  • Max's superhero name stems from a mythical creature called Pegasus which is a winged horse from Greek Mythology.
  • He is the only member of team that doesn't wear a mask due to the Horse Miraculous being a pair of glasses but wasn't the first Miraculous holder to be seen without a mask.
  • Max is the first member of the team that doesn't give himself a superhero name. Instead, he was called Pegasus by Ladybug.
  • He is actually that third person of African origins to wield a Miraculous succeeding his Miraculous predecessor Mudekudeku who wielded the Ladybug Miraculous and his friend Carapace.
  • As seen in "Mr. Pigeon 72", Max has been akumatized into Gamer four times. ("Gamer", "Catalyst", "Gamer 2.0" and one off-screen akumization).
  • On Twitter, Miraculous creator Thomas Astruc confirmed that Max is asexual, meaning he doesn't experience sexual attraction stating "On va dire que Max est plutôt ace et Alix plutôt aro..." meaning "We will say that Max is kind of ace and Alix kind of aro...".[11]
  • In "Risk", it is revealed that Max does not know how to swim.
  • In "Miraculous: Rise of the Sphinx", after Clonika's Clones of his friends mocked his newly created game before his face, he was reakumatized into Gamer again, this time under title Gamer 3.0, getting the ability to merge Paris with his game and be able to reprogram it at will.
