Marinette Dupain-Cheng is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Adrien Agreste) of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir and Miraculous World. She is a former student in Miss Bustier's class at Collège Françoise Dupont in Paris, France, and a budding fashion designer who wants to have her own brand one day.[15] She is currently in a relationship with Adrien Agreste.

With the Ladybug Miraculous, when inhabited by Tikki, Marinette transforms into the superheroine Ladybug, who gains the power of Creation. She is tasked with keeping Paris safe from akumatized villains[86] and many other threats.[87] She is also the leader of The Miraculers.

In "Syren", after Wang Fu translated the Grimoire, in order to find a way to give Ladybug and Cat Noir the ability to transform into different powered up forms, he was able to make the potion that grants the aqua form. Marinette is able to use it to become Aquabug, which happens to give her a specially modified aqua suit with fins on her feet, granting her the enhanced swimming capabilities, as well as allowing her to breathe and speak underwater.

In "Frozer" when the titular akumatized supervillain froze over Paris to turn the city into his domain, Marinette used Wang Fu's Magicaroons to transform into Lady Ice, which gives her a specially modified ice suit with skates on her feet, granting her enhanced skating capabilities as well as allowing her to stand subzero temperatures.

In "Reflekdoll", Marinette temporarily obtained the Cat Miraculous, which, when inhabited by Plagg, was able to transform her into the black cat-themed superheroine named Lady Noire[88][89][90], thus granting her the power of Destruction.[91]

In "Kwamibuster", after Tikki was captured by the titular akumatized supervillain, Marinette wore multiple Miraculouses, but only activated the Mouse Miraculous in order to become Multimouse, a mouse-themed superhero with the power of Multiplication. In the same episode, Multimouse's various copies were able to transform when the Mouse Miraculous was combined with the Ladybug, Cat, and Fox Miraculous[91] in order to become Multibug, Multinoire,[92] and Multifox respectively.

In "Feast", after successfully defeating the titular sentimonster that was controlled by both Hawk Moth and Mayura, Wang Fu began to train Marinette in order to pass off his title as "Master" onto her, and appoint her as the new Guardian of the Miraculouses.

In "Ladybug", after being expelled from school due to being falsely framed by Lila Rossi, she was almost akumatized by Scarlet Moth into Princess Justice. However, her akumatization was interrupted, partially because of Catalyst's illness from the damaged Peacock Miraculous, thus leaving it half-completed.

In "Miracle Queen", after the titular akumatized supervillain brainwashed the temporary Miraculous holders to be her slaves, Marinette unified the Dragon Miraculous with the Ladybug Miraculous, becoming Dragon Bug.[91] Since then, Marinette officially became the new Guardian of the Miraculouses after Master Fu relinquished his role as Guardian.

In "Miraculous World: New York - United Heroez", after Xavier Ramier was re-akumatized into Mr. Pigeon for the 51st time, Ladybug became Cosmobug to stop Mr. Pigeon from taking over the moon for him and his pigeons. Cosmobug has the power to travel long distances swiftly via flight, including in space.

In "Gang of Secrets", after defeating the titular akumatized supervillain group with help from Rena Rouge, who rejected her akumatization into Lady Wifi, Marinette was finally able to confide in her friends and apologize for not telling them what was wrong with her. However, when Alya knew that there was something more to Marinette's story, she stayed behind, learning through Marinette's confession that she's Ladybug.

In "Mr. Pigeon 72", after defeating Mr. Pigeon for the 72nd time with the help from Plagg and Rena Rouge, the latter helped Ladybug expand the limits of her power, thus gaining a new costume and the ability to create Magical Charms that are able to protect people from reakumatizations.

In "Optigami", in order to immobilize Style Queen, Marinette unified the Bee Miraculous with the Ladybug Miraculous in order to become Lady Bee.[93][94] It is also revealed that Alya is Marinette's heir presumptive to becoming the next guardian of the Miracle Box.

In "Sentibubbler", in order to free herself from the bubble that the titular sentimonster put her in and to take the amokized coffee cup Shadow Moth is using to control Sentibubbler, Marinette unified the Horse Miraculous with the Ladybug Miraculous to become Pegabug.[95]

In "Strikeback", after mistakenly believing Félix to be Adrien, Marinette unified the Ladybug, Horse, and Rabbit Miraculouses, becoming Pennybug, to reach him in the train and travel in time to figure out Risk's akumatized item. However, the mistake of giving a Miraculous to Félix resulted in him betraying her, stealing her yo-yo and giving it to his uncle, Gabriel Agreste, for the Peacock Miraculous, causing him to obtain all the Miraculous in the Chinese Miracle Box, except for Cat Noir's and hers.

In "Miraculous Paris", in order to counter Monarch's trap, Ladybug formulated a plan that involved the creation of two kamikotized heroes, so, after Betterfly kamikotized Alya into Ubiquity, he lent his Miraculous to her, who fused it with her Ladybug Miraculous to become Ladyfly. Later on, when Monarch threatened to invade other universes to get the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, Ladybug allowed Betterfly to kamikotize her into Ladybiquity, getting similar powers to Ubiquity to stop Monarch from going into other worlds.

In "Passion", to avoid Safari's venom bolts, Marinette temporarily used the Cat Miraculous and once again became Lady Noire.

In "Reunion", when in need of advice regarding the possibility of having a romantic relationship with Cat Noir, Marinette learned the true purpose of the kwagatama she received from Tikki, being it to come in contact with the memories of the past holders of the Ladybug Miraculous. Using it on a sigil of the Order of the Guardians left on a statue of a past Ladybug Miraculous holder, Marinette came in contact with Jeanne d'Arc, a past holder of the Ladybug Miraculous holder that had a romance with a past Cat Miraculous holder.

In "Elation", after Cat Noir didn't return her love for him, fearing he would hurt her feelings as she didn't know who he is, she was nearly akumatized by Monarch into Unmasker. However, her akumatization was interrupted by a kiss from Cat Noir, causing her desire to override her anger and heartbreak and releasing the akuma.

In "Derision", when Marinette returned to the spot of her first heartbreak during her first real date with Adrien, it caused her traumatized memories of Chloé's bullying the previous school year to return as well, leading her to have a big panic attack and once again nearly be akumatized by Monarch, now into Panic. However, her akumatization was rejected when she fully understood what happened in her past and made peace with it thereafter.

In "Revolution", after seeing all the Parisians willingly stand up and fight injustice with their own hands and refuse to turn their backs on Ladybug and Cat Noir, Marinette evolved her powers, and now, she doesn't de-transform after using her powers, and is able to cast as many Lucky Charms as she pleases without the need to recharge. After Adrien finally told Marinette he had to leave Paris, despite being devastated over it, she refused to break her promise to him and raced to the airport, where both finally shared their first kiss before being forcibly separated and watching his plane take off. When Chloé called her to taunt her about it, Marinette slapped some hard truths on her about being powerless now, making the former cry after the latter hung up on her.

In "Representation", when following Félix, believing him to be Adrien, to the school's art room, she discovered through Félix and Kagami's play the backstories of the Graham de Vanily, Fathom, and Agreste families and that Adrien and his cousin Félix are sentimonsters.

In "Conformation", Ladybug went to the Agreste mansion to talk to Nathalie, but encountered Monarch. She then finally discovered that Gabriel Agreste was Monarch, came face to face in battle with him, and unified the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to become Bug Noire.

In "Re-creation", she finally defeated Monarch, but was later paralyzed by him when she de-transformed to persuade him to give up, and he took the two Miraculouses. He later used them to summon Gimmi and make his wish, sacrificing himself in order to be reunited with his wife and heal his assistant, Nathalie. She later recovered all of the Miraculouses, restored them to their previous forms, and permanently gave them to her allies, ensuring that a supervillain won't steal them all again. However, not wanting to hurt Adrien with the terrible truth, she tells him and the whole world a half truth by stating that Gabriel sacrificed himself as hero to stop Monarch only opting to tell the rest until the Butterfly Miraculous is recovered. Moreover, Marinette was unable to find it as unbeknownst to her, Cerise Bianca somehow managed to get her hands on it and plans to use it for revenge.

In "Miraculous London", after transforming again into Bug Noire upon thinking Nathalie was still on Monarch's side, she eventually used Cataclysm to destroy the Kwami cage as well as the The Crypt to make sure Adrien won't find out the truth about the fate of his parents, and then flew to London as Cosmo Bug Noire to free him and Kagami and gave the false statement about Gabriel and Monarch. Later, Bunnyx recruited her to help stop an undesired wish from being granted and change the timeline, Marinette used the Ladybug Miraculous from the past (the only time she had renounced her Miraculous and it had no holder) to become Chronobug, a different version of her usual Ladybug identity in order to allow Alix to differ her from any of Ladybug's past versions. After several attempts to stop Timestalker, she finally saved the universe when Timestalker gave up.[96]

Appearance

Physical Appearance

Marinette is a charming teenage girl with a slim body. She stands at average height, and is noted to be a quarter French and a quarter Italian (both by her father's side) and half Chinese (by her mother's side).

She has a fair skin tone followed by shoulder-length black hair with blue reflections that are always seen tied back in pigtails, which have a thin strand stick out above on either side. According to the "Miraculous Secrets card game", Marinette "wears her 2 pigtails in memory of a very good friend from school who is sadly no longer at her school" and "Derision" confirms that this "very good friend" is Socqueline Wang.

Marinette also has light pink lips[97], bright bluebell eyes[98], and light freckles on both sides and the bridge of her nose. Her bangs are swept to the left, and her thin forelocks frame her face. She has light scarlet lipstick.

In "Cat Blanc", "Heart Hunter", "Determination" and "Derision", when Marinette has her hair down, the full length of her hair reaches down to her shoulders.

In "Reflekta" (pictured), "Animaestro", "Kwamibuster", "Derision", "Emotion", "Revolution","Representation", and "Werepapas", Marinette has her hair in a bun.

From Season 6 onwards, her hair appears to be more detailed with more strands.

Civilian Attire

In the first five seasons, Marinette wore a very dark gray blazer with rolled-up sleeves; the inside of the blazer was lined in white with light fuchsia polka dots, and it had black trimming. Underneath, she wore a white t-shirt with black stitching and a flower-shaped design below the collar at the right. The design itself had pink flowers and black leaves. She wore pink rolled-up loose jeans with a circular button on the middle of the waistline, that had matching insides like her blazer and light pink ballet flats with reddish brown soles, and said flats had thin black edges at the top and bottom, with a small black knotted ribbon on the toe. She also sports black circular earrings with silver lining that serve as her Miraculous when Tikki inhabits them. She often wore a light pink purse over her right shoulder. The purse had white polka-dots and a golden clasp. The inside was red, and on one side, there was a light pink, white, and black flowery design, with an 'M' initial inside of a circle. Connected to both sides of her purse was a black cord strap. She also wore her Kwagatama necklace under her t-shirt. She held her pigtails with red hair ties.

In a flashback in "Derision", Marinette wore light blue jeans instead of her current pink one. The change is because Chloé Bourgeois made her favorite blue jeans covered in green paint as part of a prank in the school year prior to the show's events.

From Season 6 onwards, Marinette's blazer has pink lining on the collar and a matching pink Sakura flower-shaped print adjacent to either side of said collar, with similar floral designs at the top and bottom of them as their black stem accents form an 'M' in the middle, the blazer's insides lined with pink at the rolled up sleeves with pink circular studs on them. Underneath, her shirt has a small black bow formed in the middle with matching frilled trimming at the top. Her jeans are replaced by a pair of shorter ones which are rolled up, but much higher to the thigh with the inside patterns inverted in color, as the insides are light fuchsia with the polka dots white, and the circular button on the center of the jeans' waistline is a pink Sakura flower-shaped one. She now also wears glittery gray tights and her ballet flats are more pink with black soles. Her earrings are also now a glittery dark red. The purse is also a different shade of pink and it has a new flower design, while the cord is dark burgundy.

As Ladybug

LB Mask on

Marinette transforming into Ladybug.

In the first five seasons, Ladybug wore a red superhero jumpsuit covered in black spots and a black collar/turtleneck. According to Marinette in "Marinette's Double Life", her suit was made out of indestructible fabric. When not in use, she kept her yo-yo around her hips with a red string. On her face was a red mask with five black spots that were in a symmetrical design, and the waterlines of her eyes were colored black. Her earrings were red with five black spots in a quincunx pattern, and the bands holding her hair back became red ribbons, resembling a ladybug's antennas or a ladybug flying when she's moving. Her suit had a circle pattern.

Modified Suit

Furious Fu (409)

Ladybug's modified suit.

As of "Mr. Pigeon 72", when Ladybug used her Lucky Charm, most of her costume remained the same and bore some resemblance to Mister Bug's costume, except she had solid black coloring on her hands, the bottom of her feet, her waist to upper thighs, and armpits where the spots were inverted. Her collar switched from completely black to swan-necked and red with black lining and a small ladybug-shaped zipper connected to the front of her costume similar to Cat Noir's bell. Her pigtails and hair ribbons became longer and gained a pair of blue ribbons, but after using her Miraculous Ladybug, she reverted back to her normal appearance.

From Season 6 onwards, Ladybug keeps her modified suit permanently as her normal appearance, but it has minor alterations. Her pigtails no longer have the blue ribbons, but remain long and now have a dark red ombré at the tips. The black sections of her outfit also lose the spots in them, with the armpit sections extending to the front of the shoulders with a single inverted dot in front of them. Said sections also connect to the waist and thigh sections in a wide, wavy, vertical fashion with another inverted dot in the middle adjacent to the torso on either side. Around the hips are thick red linear sections with a circular part at the end on either side with a black dot in the middle. The ends of the black sections at the thighs also curve down more above the knees with an inverted dot in the middle, and her earrings gain some glitter.

As Lady Noire

Lady Noire Transformation (22)

Marinette as Lady Noire.

The costume of Lady Noire was very similar to Cat Noir; she wore a dark gray catsuit with fluorescent green accents on her knees, forearms, waist, and neck. She had black gloves on her forearms with claws and a fluorescent green band that went down a bit and a black ball, and her black collar was a little open at the neck and had a fluorescent green band that went down to the poitrine and a black ball in the lower part of the neck. Around the waist, there was a black belt with a fluorescent green band in the middle at the right leg, a black button with a fluorescent green cat paw-shaped symbol to resemble the Cat Miraculous' symbol, and two parts of the band jutting out below with a black ball hanging at the end. Her black boots with upward pointed fluorescent green lining went all the way up to the knee, with a small flowing green band in the heel, and ended with small black triangular platform shoes. She had floor-length black hair that was styled in a single braid, which made it look like a tail (similar to Cat Noir's belt). She also had black cat ears on her head with fluorescent green lining and a black mask. Lady Noire had the same green eyes as Cat Noir, with the green sclera and slitted pupils. Like her yo-yo, Lady Noire kept her staff attached to her hip when not in use. She also wore the ring around her right ring finger like Cat Noir.

The torso, hips and thighs were red with dark magenta spots, and the same went for the face mask, however, those parts also possessed hues of purple shining on them. The thighs had dark magenta around them above the knee and ascending until halfway on the outer side with a red spot. Her shoulders were purple, but possessed a dark magenta cover connected to the costume with V-neck collar (with the Butterfly Miraculous beneath it), with two lines descending from it through the costume around the torso, and then connecting with thicker dark magenta lines originating from the back and ending below the abdomen, having two red spots (one on each side, aligned) at the front, with two thinner lines coming out from it at the back ascending until below the shoulder cover. Marinette as Ladybiquity.

Ladybiquity wore a suit with traits from the Ladybug Miraculous and Ubiquity's. Her suit conjugated a contrast between magenta and purple with white dots. Personality

Marinette is a sweet, outgoing, young, and joyful girl who loves fashion, her friends, family, and Adrien Agreste (her boyfriend), who describes her as honest, kind, fair, and the type not to cheat. She is very helpful towards those who have insecurities, such as; Juleka Couffaine, who thought she had a "class photo curse", and Marc Anciel, who was too afraid to share his creative writing. According to Clara Nightingale, Marinette has a pure heart. She cares deeply for other people, usually putting their feelings and interests even before her own, in some cases at a personal cost. Despite being genuinely kind, she has her limits, such as when she gets irritated with Chloé Bourgeois to the point that she refuses to continue guarding her against the Evillustrator as Ladybug.

EV S01EP08 (158)

Marinette frustrated at her situation.

Despite her outgoing and sympathetic personality, Marinette struggles with self-confidence and self-esteem. Before being Ladybug, she was more nervous and didn't oppose others, but her confidence grew considerably since then such as talking with Adrien and standing up for others. In urgent situations, she becomes very nervous, clumsy, a bit awkward, and quick to panic which includes approaching her crush, trouble-choosing between her love interests, when in contact with major celebrities if she thinks others do a better job compared to herself or losing something that will expose her secret identity. She once had an unhealthy obsession with Adrien, a male model who is in her class. In "Perfection", with Kagami's help Marinette starts to figure out that her lack of confidence and self-esteem come from a fear of being not good enough. And from "Derision", as well as out of the fear of being hurt and humiliated again as she was the year before.

Sole Crusher (333)

Marinette telling an akumatized Zoé that everyone has other individualities to comfort her after revealing Chloé's lies and the concept of "winner and loser" doesn't exist despite knowing that the latter would be upset.

In some episodes, she starts showing her Ladybug traits in her civilian self, first off in "Darkblade", where she told everyone to retreat and second in "Sole Crusher" when Zoé got akumatized into the titular villain and manipulated by Chloé and threatened by her to attack Kitty Section, Marinette was forced to step in and reason with the latter, telling her that everyone is different and has other unique qualities and other individualities to comfort her after revealing Chloé's lies and the concept of "winner and loser" doesn't exist to her and seeing the latter upset. Despite a brief interruption from Cat Noir, Marinette tells her that she might trip, she might fall but she will always have someone like her to help her back up and she will always be there for her.

RC S01EP09 (185)

Marinette unintentionally accuses her classmates of theft.

Marinette can act impulsively and irrationally at times, as shown when she deflected the false accusation of "stealing" Chloé's bracelet onto others who are also innocent. She is willing to do several risky tasks in order to protect her image, like erasing an embarrassing message on Adrien's phone by stealing it. More so if or when she is jealous when other girls such as Chloé or Lila Rossi flirt with Adrien, even abusing her powers as Ladybug to keep them away or forgetting to detransform in the first place. However, Marinette learns from her mistakes and becomes a more open-minded, understanding person. She also takes advice from others very well, whether it is family or friends, as seen throughout the series. According to herself in "Family", as her civilian self-personality wise, she takes after her father, having her great uncle's creative side and her grandfather's fear of change.

Thanks to Chloé and Kim's prank and unknowingly because of her archenemy, she learned what happens when one obsesses over their own desires and that you not only hurt yourself but others too. Such as earlier in the series, Marinette would have been all over Adrien but in "Mr. Pigeon 72", she forces Kagami to see him, but in "Crocoduel", she goes to great lengths to avoid seeing Luka. Her love obsession caused many problems, such as in "Desperada", where her emotional preference caused her to give Adrien the Snake Miraculous, even though Luka was a much better fit. And causing the kwamis' capture and with that being the last straw Marinette gives up her love for Adrien for the sake of her people. However, in trying to shut off her love affections she goes denial crazy again from running away from her feelings to desperately wanting a guy to love her back even to almost foolishly accepting Monarch's offer aware that everything would end in disaster if not for Cat Noir. As well as because of her archenemy's influence in "Derision", as both sought easier ways out of their problems but were short-sided and yet Marinette accepted the outcome and followed her friend's example.

Speaking of example, Marinette also has learned as a designer to take inspiration from many things even showing it her costume and powers as Ladybug at first it was simple showing that she wasn't ready to become a hero. But as time went on it started in "Mr. Pigeon 72", where her upgraded suit showed a resemblance to Adrien's Mister Bug suit in "Reflekdoll". As well as with her Magical Charms basing it off the charm Alya has attached to her phone as a result of their friendship and in "Derision", she styled her pigtails and as Ladybug they grew longer similar to Socqueline's and taking all of it into a fact that changes are all tributes to the three friends who displayed the one thing Marinette lacked but grew to have: confidence. And in her and Cat Noir's latest appearances, now they have taken inspiration from their Re-Verse counterparts to tribute what they encouraged each other to believe in: hope, themselves and others.

CC (491)

Ladybug preparing to jump and attack.

As Ladybug, Marinette retains many of her alter ego's characteristics, but she is much stronger. Her confidence and bravery come out more prominently.[99] According to Cat Noir, she can be stubborn at times, especially when she isn't easily convinced. While almost all of Ladybug's plans are effective, they tend to be complex and rather bizarre. She is more cautious and careful than Cat Noir, sometimes needing to restrain or stop him from doing hasty acts seen in several episodes and for Shadow Moth, he believed it was the only reason why she kept winning. Only on rare occasions, she can act hasty, especially if she is in a rush to do something, multiple things at once or being quick to assume like in "Kuro Neko", when she mistook the titular sentimonster for an akumatized Cat Noir. She believes that a great superhero always listens to their head, meaning that she isn't easily fooled or swayed by deceptions and lies.

Ladybug strives to rescue everyone, including those akumatized by Hawk Moth. She usually tries to persuade the supervillains to calm down and stop their rampage when she can. She is aware that there is a line between justice and revenge believing that honesty and justice don't mean anything if you're pressured into doing it, like as she did with Bob in "Silencer". She acknowledges that good things come by doing good actions and that not all problems can be solved by wishing them away like Hawk Moth hopes, especially at the expense of hurting the innocent. She also values the lives of others more than material possessions. Similar to her partner, through her lifestyle, she isn't tempted by power because Marinette understands that her life can be great without it. However, for a long time, her obsession for Adrien got in the way of saving people.

Marinette takes her image, Miraculous powers, and those of others very seriously as Ladybug. Such as when fighting against Hawk Moth's villains, compared to Cat Noir's laid-back and goofy personality, and more so at Chloé for using her powers to create a fake accident, that could have led to a serious one. It took the most critical point in "Revolution", when one of her moral codes as a hero was used against her but also realized even if it is that the person must still stand and do what is right. Given these traits, Adrien claims that her civilian form is funnier than Ladybug. But she is also sensitive about her image, such as getting annoyed at Chloé playing her alter ego in Clara Nightingale's music video, a little angry when Nora doubted her abilities, and even attacking Miraculer impulsively after the latter tauntingly mimicked her. Although she can get exasperated with Cat Noir if he jokes too much, she handles it calmly at times and enjoys teasing him or others. Similar to Cat Noir, she is clever with her words and occasionally enjoys making puns. According to Marinette in "Family", as her alter ego personality-wise, she takes after her mother and her grandmother Gina's adventurous spirit.

LW S01EP07 (583)

Marinette refuses to let Alya discover her secret identity.

As her alter ego, Marinette strives to keep her personal and superhero lives separate to protect herself and her loved ones. Still, she aims to be honest with others in other ways, like with Cat Noir about not having romantic feelings for him and seeking advice from others. No matter her difficult tasks, Marinette does everything she can to set things right as Ladybug while keeping up with her everyday responsibilities, like studying, designing things, and more. There are exceptions to the rule such as when she mixed up her duties to her former master and her personal plans, like her letter to Adrien. She also has occasional problems inventing excuses for her absences to her friends, teachers, and parents. When off duty like Cat Noir, Ladybug has learned to relax and have fun.[100][101][102][103][104]

As a duo, she is cool, calm, and level-headed, but does let personal matters take over sometimes as she voiced her frustrations at Cat Noir during a fight leading to her doubts about trusting him during the "New York Special", and then an accident. As time went on Ladybug realized that she and Cat Noir would have to include others in their work with them following her as the leader adopting a caring protective mother role figure. Doing so she doesn't see them as sidekicks but as friends and extremely values their support. She is also great at giving advice to others when they need it and shows great care for them and their loved ones when in danger such as when Chloé and Kagami, were suspended from their team roles as the cost of revealing their identities to Hawk Moth. According to Cat Walker in "Kuro Neko", as team leader, Ladybug doesn't play favorites and cares for everyone equally. Also, she learned to take suggestions, and ideas and to follow the lead of others when the situation calls for it such as in "Stormy Weather" and "Psycomedian", following Cat Noir's lead when she became more aggressive and irrational than normal, fierce boarding reckless.

After taking on guardian duties, Ladybug still continued to accept the help of her allies both old and new understanding that the rules are slowly changing. And yet, she became overprotective of and bordering afraid for Cat Noir, herself, and others as well as affecting her friendship and partnership with him unknowingly acting like her archenemy by keeping him out of the loop, taking him for granted, calling the other heroes excessively or not trusting him to retrieve the Miraculous from the holders whose identities he knows unaware that he wanted to protect her to but in the opposite direction. To the point of being very controlling in "Penalteam", trying to keep the ball, which caused her team to lose the first part of the match. She fully realizes her and other mistakes, after Monarch stole all the Miraculous in the Miracle Box (except for hers and Cat Noir's), feeling immense guilt believing what she deserved until Cat Noir reminds her that she still has him, the faith of all Parisians and ensured her they will retrieve all of the Miraculous, and make sure they are not stolen again inspiring her with the hope to keep fighting.

With the loss of the Miraculous, her confidence as Ladybug shook to where she occasionally hesitated and became sensitive at the mention of it, especially missing the kwamis and the rest of the team.

Despite the fact that being Ladybug had allowed her to meet Tikki and save people, Marinette started to grow tired and stressed about keeping her two lives separate and having to lie to everyone she loves, eventually causing her to break down and cry to Luka about her problems. While on occasion, she rarely breaks down as Ladybug, often voicing her doubts and mistakes to Cat Noir during their hardest times. She felt more of the strain in her civilian life as she took the mantle of the guardian, causing her to break down, even more, realizing she can't have a love life or be honest with anyone; effectively condemning herself to a cage of lies until Shadow Moth is no longer a threat.

Speaking of her tasks as the Guardian, Marinette worked relentlessly to decode the grimoire and was very determined to stop Hawk Moth from re-akumatizing people. However, she is also stressed out more and struggled to balance everything to the point where she constantly lies to her parents and friends. Because of this, Marinette started to act like Gabriel such as resorting to drastic measures such as not telling Luka the truth and calling off her friendships with her friends, both instances lead to them being akumatized. It was there that Marinette, after breaking off with Luka and making up to her friends, she decided to let Alya in on her secret of being Ladybug. After gaining help from Alya in "Mr. Pigeon 72", she has a deeper understanding of her powers and when using them she was happy about protecting people even further. Through it, she calmed down and started to see the flaws in others. Unlike Hawk Moth, Marinette has let go of past mistakes as she wasn't angry at Master Fu for losing the two Miraculouses leading to now, and in "Furious Fu" not blaming herself for Fu's condition knowing that he wouldn't want her to do that as others still needed her. However, because of the big burden, she has as the guardian, similar to Master Fu, Ladybug becomes very protective of the Miraculous under her care.

And yet, the burden of being the guardian wasn't the only thing that made her behave the way she did it was also Hawk Moth's relentless hunting of her and Cat Noir. Over time she had grown more aware of Hawk Moth's deceptive and super sneaky nature to the point where she had nightmares and was afraid of what he was going to do if he found out when she let others in on her secrets and has the power to back it up. Despite burdening herself to keep everyone else safe she had forgotten it works both ways as no one else wants to see her suffer for them. Because of her archenemy, she understood what the other guardians, Miraculous holders, and kwamis felt knowing what it's like to be hunted.

Not only that through her adventures, Ladybug and Cat Noir have learned to never use their powers for personal desires as well as taught others to follow their example. Much moreso, it not only became a duel between good and evil but social classes too with Marinette learning from Gabriel, Tomoe and even Chloe that not only is it bad to use miraculous powers for personal gain but any power or status for such purposes.

As Lady Noire, Marinette retained most of her personality as Ladybug, like her cautiousness and creativity. She took after her partner's sense of humor, cunning, and charm, with Mister Bug believing that she was the one wearing the clown suit. Returning as Lady Noire again, she adopted more of her partner's persona, becoming flirty.

Like Adrien when he was Aspik, as Multimouse, while trying to protect her identity as Ladybug, Marinette was trustworthy, faithful, and clever. However, she pretended to be a klutz and "revealed" her identity in front of Cat Noir so he wouldn't think that Marinette is Ladybug.

As Bug Noire, Marinette had both the personality traits as Ladybug (the creativity and precaution) and Lady Noire (the wisecracks and keenness). During her final battle with Monarch, she wasn't afraid to show her civilian self-personality, such as being disgusted with how far the villain was willing to go to get what he wanted nor wasn't afraid to be brutally honest with the truth about his actions affecting the people around him and the world, especially his son, despite Monarch's claims that he was doing all this for him and believed Adrien would do the same. Despite this, after defeating him, she made it clear what she would do if she cataclysmed the rest of the rings (rendering him powerless, free the kwamis from his captivity, give Cat Noir his ring back, repair the damage he caused and everything would go back to normal) but decided not to, knowing it would do no good and because the fact that he and Nathalie had little time left and Adrien would be even more miserable. Instead, she was willing to talk him down; hear him out about how much Émilie's passing had affected him before offering to come up with a solution. Though she was tricked and warned him not to go through with the wish, she decided to honor his last wishes of sparing Adrien the harsh truths about his father.

As her adult alter ego, according to Bunnyx, Marinette will grow into a wise, calm, strong, and confident leader, meaning that she isn't impulsive and irrational. Such as when she comforted Bunnyx, telling her that their fight wasn't over, easily figuring out she had a message from her younger self, and after Timetagger's defeat, she confidently told her younger self that they'll always be able to save the day.

Abilities

As a civilian

For a list of things made by Marinette, see List of Marinette's creations.
Mr. Pigeon 433

Marinette working on a derby hat.

Marinette has exceptional talent in fashion design, able to sketch ideas in a notebook after getting inspired by her surroundings[105] and sewing by hand or with a machine. She usually wears her own creations and makes clothing for others. She also can create graphic designs using a computer, such as album covers. Her skills in this field are exceptional for an amateur, such as when her pigeon-styled derby hat was good enough to be recognized by the famous professional designer, Gabriel Agreste, despite the fact that she had never made one before. According to Audrey Bourgeois, the harshest fashion critic, she didn't see other talents as great as Gabriel Agreste until she met Marinette. She also wants to become a fashion designer when she grows up. Since "Reflekdoll", Marinette is working on a website to show off her designs.

Although she is absent-minded, Marinette is clever and quick-thinking, as shown when she hid her signature in her hat when Chloé stole her design, which exposed her. Many of her friends describe "she is always able to come up with the right plan at the right time". Despite being amnesiac from the effects of Oblivio's powers, she outsmarted the villain while they were looking for her and Adrien. Ladybug's resourcefulness is more obvious when she is figuring out how to utilize her Lucky Charm, most of her plans being outside the box yet risky and complicated. She also has good instincts, as she told Cat Noir, that revealing their identities would have to wait until Hawk Moth was defeated, meaning she understood what her archenemy is capable of if he found out. By putting the clues together, she figured out, despite being deceived, Hawk Moth's identity and also managed to trick Cat Noir into believing she isn't Ladybug. To the point where her instincts and intuition have developed so much that even Su-Han had praised it with high marks calling it an essential quality for being a guardian. According to her in "Hawk Moth and the Akumatized Villains", due to not knowing what villain will come their way, the type of powers they have, or how strong said villain is, forces her and the team to adapt shown in "Ephemeral" and countless other episodes. According to Alya, Marinette always gets a high score on school tests. Ms. Bustier said that she had answered each question on the last test correctly.

Even in her civilian form, Marinette has high stamina, endurance, and agility, running long distances without stopping in several episodes. She is naturally flexible, being even more flexible as Ladybug because of her enhanced physical abilities.[106] She is also quite stealthy, frequently sneaking up on Adrien and other people without being noticed. Marinette is very good at sports, being quite good at ice skating and dancing. By "Miraculous London", she even became able to fight quietly and stealthily. She has good reflexes, being on par with Adrien despite fencing for the first time, tough Adrien was most likely holding back to teach Marinette through example and physical learning without hurting her. With practicing from Kagami, Marinette has the potential to be a good fencer.[107] In "Kwamibuster", due to her high stamina, endurance, and mental resistance, Marinette was able to handle the strain and/or use of multiple Miraculous at one time with minor fatigue.

From Master Fu, Marinette learned the history of the kwamis and their Miraculouses. Her knowledge extends to the spells such as the incantation needed for the wish-granting power of the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses. However, as Fu's understanding is limited, Marinette's training might be incomplete. But Master Fu knew that Marinette would figure out everything she needed to know about the Miraculous and grow stronger as a hero, she became the new Guardian of the Miraculous.

Marinette is very skilled at video games, easily beating Max at Ultimate Mecha Strike III and getting the highest score in the entire school. While playing with Adrien, she quickly wins the round they were playing. When playing with both boys, while the boys seem to be tense, and concentrating really hard, Marinette is the complete opposite. Unlike them, her expression is calm and collected, showing how easy and effortless it is for her to win.

As complimented by Adrien, Marinette is an excellent baker. She knows both approaches, modern and traditional, to baking, as well as how to handle cooking facilities. She makes "magicaroons" for Tikki, containing all the power-ups from the Miraculous spellbook. According to Marinette herself in "Pretension", she has been working in her parents' bakery for so long that she knows how good something is without eating it. Despite her being terrified afterwards, she had the courage to stand up to Gabriel. In "The Puppeteer", it is revealed that Marinette can whistle. Not as good as Lila, she is adequate at acting or deceiving people, especially akumatized villains, as a part of her plans to defeat and save them.

In "Determination", Marinette knows how to speak Spanish, she is also working on learning Mandarin Chinese with her mother's help and Adrien's.[108] She is learning how to play the guitar with Luka's help.[109]

Marinette is an exceptional driver for her age, despite not having much experience in "Reverser", she is good at flying a kite. In "Gorizilla" and "Lies", she knows how to pilot a remote-controlled helicopter and a drone. Due to her spending time with her grandmother, she learned how to ride a scooter bike in "Queen Banana". In "Dearest Family", Marinette gets a pink scooter bike from her grandmother, since she thought it was her birthday even though it was three months ago. "Jubilation" is the first time she's seen riding it.

As Ladybug/Chronobug

LB Transformation (27)

Ladybug is ready for action.

Ladybug has much more enhanced physical abilities, such as speed and agility. These abilities allow her to react to and evade light-based attacks, as well as jump and leap several times her height and length. Similar to a real ladybug, she can climb up and walk on surfaces without her yo-yo.[110] Her increased strength allows her to do things such as using her yo-yo to pull a large robot onto the ground, as well as break Cat Noir's nearly unbreakable staff and an oyster's pearl using only her fingers. Her near-invulnerability and great durability to physical damage[111] allow her to jump off of 2 story buildings and land without issue and survive a fall off of one, as well as seemingly survive a fall at the height of at least several stories. She can even handle temperatures as severe as absolute 0. Ladybug is skilled in hand-to-hand combat when fighting villains or Cat Noir when he ends up being controlled by one. Her combat skills have improved so much that she can fight blindfolded with ease in "Psycomedian". Even out of "Aqua Mode", she is a good swimmer.

Horrificator 387

Ladybug throwing her yo-yo.

Ladybug has remarkable talent with wielding her yo-yo, like using it as a grappling hook, a rope to restrain others, a projectile, a slicer even against solid materials, and a shield if she spins it fast enough. Her yo-yo also can work as a breathing apparatus for those who can't breathe underwater like herself. After an akuma or amok is released from its corrupted object, Ladybug can open her yo-yo to catch it and remove the energy charged with it, releasing it into its original form. In other episodes, she can fight exceptionally well with other weapons besides her yo-yo and is good at dual wielding despite having little to no training.[112]

Lucky Charm 06

Ladybug calls upon her Lucky Charm.

Her special power, Lucky Charm, creates an object that helps her to achieve her goal, often being to stop a villain. Though usually confused at first, her creativity and cleverness help enable her to perceive where the object can be used to help her achieve her goal.[113] However, from "Origins" to "Collusion", Lucky Charm drained her power and reverted her back to Marinette shortly afterwards, so she had to use it wisely. But, after the events of "Revolution", that is not the case anymore, and she can cast as many Lucky Charms as she wants without transforming back. Once the villain is dealt with, Ladybug can throw her Lucky Charm object into the air and use the Miraculous Ladybug, which will make it revert to an enormous swarm of ladybugs and fix all of the damage done since the villain appeared. She is also able to erase her Lucky Charm without using the Miraculous Ladybug as seen in "Miraculous Paris".

Because she has the power of creation, Ladybug is the one that sets the limits of her power. This is shown when Ladybug, determined to stop other people from being akumatized, is able to expand her powers, gaining a new costume and the ability to create magical charms that are able to prevent re-akumatizations to those who receive them.

Because her Chronobug form from "Miraculous London" is a simply a new form of the achieved with the same Miraculous, she has the same powers and abilities as her normal form. However, her suit is bio-luminescent, meaning it glows slightly in the dark; this trait appeared most likely as Marinette's subconscious desire to ease Bunnyx' job of keeping track of her. However, since she also needed to maintain stealth not to make other people aware of her presence and disrupt the timeline, the suit's glow is notably dull.

As Aquabug

Aqua Bug Transformation (12)

Aquabug, in addition to her original powers also has enhanced swimming capabilities due to the fins on her feet as well as the ability to breathe and speak underwater. Because she can breath underwater by herself in this form, she can give her yo-yo to to someone else to use as a respirator.[114]

As Lady Ice

Lady Ice Transformation (17)

Lady Ice, in addition to her original powers, also has enhanced skating capabilities as well as the ability to handle extremely low temperatures.

As Cosmobug

Cosmobug Transformation (8)

Cosmobug, in addition to her normal powers, also has the ability to survive at high altitudes and in space as well as the ability move freely and quickly while up in the air due to her jetpack; indeed she can use her jetpack to fly from Paris to London and back in less than a night. Furthermore, much like in space, having her helmet on also allows her to breathe and survive underwater, at least for a brief time.[115] To transform back to Ladybug, she says Retrogradation.[116]

As Lady Noire

Lady Noire Cataclysm 11

Lady Noire calls on her Cataclysm.

Lady Noire had the same abilities as her partner, such as more enhanced skills, like speed, agility, and strength, that she was almost invulnerable to physical damage. She had enhanced senses such as hearing, smell, night vision, and super stealth like a cat.

Like Cat Noir, Lady Noire could use her staff efficiently, wielding it as a sword, being able to spin it at high speeds to form a shield, and taking advantage of its length-changing features. To travel long distances, she used her staff and its variety in length to vault over obstacles.

Her special power, Cataclysm, allowed her to negatively affect anything that she touched with her ring hand. While it was usually used to destroy objects, it could be used for a variety of different effects. However, from "Reflekdoll" to "Collusion", Cataclysm drained her power and reverted her back to Marinette shortly afterwards, so she had to use it wisely. But, after the events of "Revolution", that was not the case anymore, and she could cast as many Cataclysms as she wanted without transforming back.

As Multimouse

Multimouse Multitude (15)

Multimouse calls on her Multitude.

Multimouse had much more enhanced skills, such as speed, agility, and strength, and she is almost invulnerable to physical damage.

Her special power, Multitude, allowed her to turn into a number of tiny clones of herself. The clones were small, a lot smaller compared to the Kwamis. In order to activate her power, Multimouse took several jumps using her skip rope, which made the bottom section of her legs shine and her tiny clones were created and started to appear. As the original size started to shrink and decrease, Multimouse had the ability to divide herself into smaller clones. All of them had the same costume, including the Miraculous, but the original one wore all of the Miraculouses, creating a difference between the rest of them.

As Multifox

Multifox Mirage (7)

Besides the powers she had as Multimouse, Multifox possessed the power Mirage. She divided herself into tiny clones and gave the Fox Miraculous to one of the clones. By playing her flute, she produced an orange ball of energy at the far end of it and then threw it to create a hyper-realistic illusion. This illusion could disappear when touched or when Multifox undid it by shouting out "Reality".

As Multinoire

Multinoir Cataclysm (6)

Besides the powers she had as Multimouse, Multinoire possessed the power Cataclysm. As Cat Noir gave her the Miraculous, she wore it around her waist. It allowed her to negatively affect anything that she touched with her ring hand. While it was usually used to destroy objects, it could be used for a variety of different effects. She also gained the staff as an additional tool.

As Multibug

Multibug Lucky Charm (5)

Besides the powers she had as Multimouse, Multibug possessed the power of Lucky Charm. Still wearing her earrings after being set free, she used her powers to trap the Akuma and purify it. She gained the yo-yo as an additional tool.

As Dragon Bug

Miracle Queen 234

Besides the powers she had as Ladybug, Dragon Bug possessed the powers of Elemental Dragons. It allowed her to use the power of the Water, Wind, and Lightning elements and even combine them with her yo-yo to make a shield. She also gained the sword as an additional tool.

As Lady Bee

Optigami (446)

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, in her fusion form with the Bee Miraculous, she possessed the power of Venom. It allowed her to use her spinning top to paralyze her adversaries.

As Pegabug

Sentibubbler 407

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, Pegabug possessed the power of Voyage. It allowed her to open a portal that she could travel through and exit at any location that she desired. She also gained the horseshoe as an additional tool.

As Pennybug

Strikeback 236

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, Pennybug possessed the power of Voyage and Burrow. It allowed her to open a portal that she could travel through and exit at any location that she desired, similarly to Pegabug, but being Pennybug allowed her to create portals that could traverse through time. By advancing in time a few seconds, she could simulate teleportation. She also gained the horseshoe and the umbrella as additional tools.

As Ladyfly

Miraculous World - Paris Special 870

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, Ladyfly possessed the power of Kamikotization. It allowed her to create a kamiko that, once entering in a object belonging to a person, was capable of turning them into an empowered champion, with whom she could communicate telepathically. She also gained the cane as an additional tool.

As Ladybiquity

Miraculous World - Paris Special 1215

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, Ladybiquity could also travel to other universes. She was also noted to have enhanced abilities seeing how she kicked and beat up Monarch even when he unified the Butterfly, Horse, and Rooster Miraculous and was supposed to also have enhanced abilities. She could also plan in advance Monarch's plans and in which universe he was heading too.

As Bug Noire

Re-creation 027

In addition to the powers she had as Ladybug, Bug Noire possessed the power of Cataclysm. It allowed her to negatively affect anything she touched with her ring hand. While it was usually used to destroy objects, it could be used for a variety of different effects. She also gained the staff as an additional tool.

As Cosmo Bug Noire

Miraculous World - London Special 171

As a form manifested by unifying the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, as well as activating the space mode, Cosmo Bug Noire has the powers of Lucky Charm, Miraculous Cosmo Bug Noire, purification and the ability to create Magical Charms from the Ladybug, the powers of Cataclysm, night vision, enhanced hearing and also possesses sharp claws from the Cat and the ability to breathe and survive in space as well as the power to fly at high-speeds thanks to her jetpack.

Etymology

  • The name "Marinette" is a diminutive of the name "Marine"[117] which means "of the sea" in French[118], recalls the meaning "little sailor girl" and Sailor Moon's title, which Miraculous is heavily inspired by.[119]
    • In the English version, the pronunciation of the name Marinette with "mar" as in "marry" is used, and in French, the pronunciation is pronounced as in "Maximum", and in other countries, the pronunciation with "mar" as in "margin" is used.
    • In The Mini Menace Ladybug, her original name was Marietta.
    • In "Befana", Gina Bianchi (Marinette's paternal grandmother) calls her Marinetta.
  • Marinette's surnames Dupain & Cheng each have meanings to them.
    • The French surname Dupain means "of the bread" or "bread" (a reference to her father's job as a baker and both his and Marinette's own skills at baking).
    • The Chinese surname Cheng means "completed, finished, succeeded" (成) or "sincere, honest, true" (诚).
      • However, Cheng is usually written as "程" when used as a surname in Chinese.
      • The "completed" meaning of Cheng might reference Ladybug's battles against Gabriel and his Akumatized villains.
        • Which foreshadowed Marinette's final battle as Bug Noire against Gabriel as Monarch and, especially, how not "Ladybug" or "Bug Noire" succeeded in beating Monarch, but she did by reaching out to him and making him change his wish to end in a positive result.
      • The "honest" meaning of Cheng is somewhat ironic because Marinette while she is generally honest and actually dislikes liars, her duty as Ladybug and later as Guardian forced her to lie to the world, especially to those closest to her.
  • Ladybug, Marinette's main superhero name, references the type of small beetle on which the eponymous Miraculous is based on.
    • Since this name contains the word "Lady", Cat Noir, who's known to make puns, came to affectionately refer to her as "M' Lady".
  • Aquabug is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "aqua" which is the Latin word for "water" and references how she activates "Aqua Mode" to breathe underwater,
  • Ladyice is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "ice", referencing how she activated "Ice Mode" to survive at low/freezing temperatures.
    • She is mistakenly called "Icebug" by Clara Contard in "Stormy Weather 2".
    • The name is spelled as "Lady Ice" by Philippe in a flashback in "Destruction".[120]
    • Interestingly her name Icebug, despite being a mistake, comes from not only a footwear company that sells cold weather shoes but it's also the name of a rare family of bugs that live in the cold.
    • She is known as "Snowbug" in Bandai merchandise, but it's unknown if it was an early name before being changed later in production, and the name was accidentally left in the toyline.
  • Lady Noire's name translates to "Black Lady", referring to the black of her costume.
    • Lady Noire's nickname "She-Cat Noir" given by Reflekta is a reference to She-Hulk from Marvel Comics.
      • In "Reflekdoll", Mister Bug (Cat noir using the Ladybug Miraculous) jokingly "accused" her of taking this name so he could still refer to her as "M'Lady".
    • Lady Noire's name is a nod to the fan ship name given to the relationship between Ladybug and Cat Noir.
    • Both the official Instagram and the Miraculous Ladybug & Cat Noir running app spell this name as "Lady Noir".
  • Multimouse comes from a mouse's high reproductive rate.
    • On the official YouTube channel, Multimouse's name is spelled "Multi Mouse".[121]
    • Her name was originally meant to be Polymouse, but due to a mistake during production, she became Multimouse, and Mylène Haprèle later took the name Polymouse for her own hero identity.[121]
  • Multifox is a portmanteau of her "Multimouse" superhero name and "fox", referencing how she unified the Mouse and Fox Miraculouses.
  • Multinoire is a portmanteau of her "Multimouse" and "Lady Noire" superhero names as she is a fusion of the two forms.
  • Multibug is a portmanteau of her "Mutimouse" and "Ladybug" superhero names as she is a fusion of the two forms.
  • Dragon Bug is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "dragon", referencing how she unified the Ladybug and Dragon Miraculouses.
    • Depending on the official sources, the name of her Ladybug-Dragon fusion form can be spelled as either "Dragon Bug" or "Dragonbug"
  • Cosmobug is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "cosmos", which is another word for universe, whose volume is mostly represented by "outer space", an empty vacuum that exists between celestial bodies like planets, and references how she activates "space mode" to be able to travel through the cosmos and survive in the vacuum of space.
  • Lady Bee's name is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "Queen Bee" which was Chloé's hero name before she lost her powers permanently and is also a term used to describe a woman who dominates, leads a group or is in a favored position; while in Chloé's case, the term signifies her dominating personality and former position of power as the mayor's daughter, in Ladybug's case, it emphasizes her position as the leader of Team Miraculous.
    • In one of the first concept art of the Lady Bee fusion, her name was originally BeeBug.
  • Pegabug's name is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "Pegasus", the superhero name of Max Kanté while transformed with the Horse Miraculous.
  • Pennybug's name is a combination of three hero names – "Pegasus", "Bunnyx" and "Ladybug".
  • Ladyfly is a portmanteau of the name "Ladybug" and the word "butterfly".
  • Ladybiquity is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "Ubiquity", the name of the kamikotized hero form of Marinette's friend Alya as well as Alya's counterpart from the Re-verse.
  • Bug Noire's name translates to "Black Bug".
    • Since Bug Noire is the fused form of Marinette's superhero variations with the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, respectively, whose names both include the term "Lady" (Ladybug and Lady Noire), accurately her name is a combination of the second halves of both names (Ladybug and Lady Noire).
    • As well as her connection to Cat Noir as the fused form is a combination of the second halves of their both names (Ladybug and Cat Noir). Reminding her that they are always together as friends, teammates and lovers.
  • Chronobug is a portmanteau of her "Ladybug" superhero name and "Chronos", the name of the Primordial God of time from Greek and Roman mythologies, referencing how she took this form to travel through time and stop Timestalker from finding out her identity while helping Bunnyx differentiate her from her other counterparts from different moments in time.
    • While the original Ladybug's red coloring is based on the known red variation of the insect, Chronobug's yellow coloring is based on yellow-colored ladybugs, which are a color variation of the Chinese ladybird, a specific type of ladybugs. This is fitting, since Marinette herself is half-Chinese.

Development

  • Thomas Astruc created Ladybug around 2005 when he was exchanging drawings on post-it notes with another worker and made one with the superheroine.[122][123]
  • Marinette's design has changed over time from the original Ladybug PV version.
    • Her anime design included jean shorts.
    • As Ladybug, she had a red face mask without black spots and two long red ribbons attached to each pigtail. She also lacked freckles.
    • In the PV, Marinette's earrings were always red with five spots, no matter if she was Ladybug or Marinette. She only wore them as a civilian when needing to transform.
      • PV Ladybug's costume differs from the CGI Ladybug as well, with PV Ladybug's spots being found only on her torso (her legs and feet were completely red, as well as the mask) and wearing a ladybug-themed bag instead of having a yo-yo. PV Ladybug's hair and hair ribbons are also significantly longer than the current version of Ladybug, and she has an ahoge, which means "foolish hair" in Japanese.
      • The yo-yo didn't exist; PV Ladybug fought using hand-to-hand combat.
      • PV Ladybug was less shy around her crush, as she's able to be very close to Félix Agreste without panicking or being nervous. She even asks him out while slightly blushing and looking right at him, although Félix coldly refuses.
      • Although her name in the PV was Marinette, many fans of the early version call her "Bridgette" to differentiate the two.
    • In "The Art of Miraculous", from early designs Ladybug was suppose to use her yoyo "in more dynamic and diverse ways".
Marinette render model

Marinette's older CGI design model.

  • Marinette's CGI design seems to have gone through a change as well. Earlier footage and images of Marinette included dark bluish-black hair, red tips of hair at the end of her pigtails, and gray eyes.
    • In a placeholder animation, Ladybug was seen wielding a sword. Whether or not this was to be used as a new weapon or a Lucky Charm object is unknown.
  • During the earlier stages of development, Ladybug wasn't allowed to abuse her powers of good luck, or else something bad would happen to her. As of now, it is unknown if she still has this issue since, as seen in "The Bubbler", all that happens when she selfishly uses Lucky Charm is that she runs out of power and loses her transformation, which is no longer the case after she gained access to her adult powers in "Revolution".
  • Both prototype versions of Marinette have her mask be the last piece of her costume to materialize during her transformation. In the final version, her mask is instead the first piece to materialize.

Trivia

  • Marinette's hair color is a homage to old comic books that would use blue highlights on black hair.[124]
  • Marinette and her alter-ego Ladybug have appeared in every single episode so far, except:
    • "Evolution" for Marinette, as she remains transformed into Ladybug for the entire episode.
    • "Transmission" for Ladybug, who is only seen in a flashback.
    • "Plastic - The Story So Far", which is the first, and so far only time Marinette in any form is absent in any Miraculous media.
  • According to Thomas Astruc, the reason for the simplicity of Ladybug's first suit is that she wasn't ready to become a hero.[125] That's also the reason why it was upgraded after unlocking new powers in season 4.[126]
    • The new costume Ladybug receives in "Mr. Pigeon 72" is identical to one of Thomas Astruc's designs for an adult Ladybug costume and her new transformation is actually a reference to the old, 3D Ladybug from 2014.
  • Marinette holds a few records related to the Miraculouses and their use:
    • She's the first person to be a Guardian of the Miraculous and an active Miraculous holder at the same time.[127]
    • She's the first ever female Guardian.[127]
    • She has used the most Miraculouses out of every (living) person, with 9: the Ladybug, the Cat, the Mouse, the Fox, the Dragon, the Bee, the Horse, the Rabbit and an alternate version of the Butterfly. Gabriel Agreste held this record before his passing in "Re-creation".
      • Except for the Peacock, Dragon, Turtle and Monkey Miraculouses, she is the second person of Chinese origins to use let alone wear all of the Miraculouses of a single box following the first owners.
      • Whereas with the Monkey, Turtle and Dragon Miraculouses, she was the third person of Chinese origins to wear them following their original owners, Sun Wukong, Hua Mulan and Master Fu.
    • If power-up forms (Aquabug, Lady Ice and Cosmobug) and alternate identities (Chronobug) are counted, Marinette holds another record – for the most Miraculous transformations, with 13.
    • In "Miraculous Paris", Marinette becomes the first known Miraculous holder to fuse two Miraculouses from different worlds – her own Ladybug Miraculous with Betterfly's Butterfly Miraculous.
    • As of "Miraculous London", she is also the first known person to use both Unification and an alternate mode at the same time as Cosmo Bug Noire.
  • Lady Noire's debut was foreshadowed in the second and third seasons' opening, in which she is shown with cat ears, a snout, whiskers, and a tail.
    • It's also a homage to a deleted inktober drawing of a female Cat Miraculous holder.
    • She is also the first known female wielder to use the Cat Miraculous.
    • The second person of French and Chinese origins to use it following Hei Mao and Cat Noir.
    • Following her father's side of her family tree she is actually the first Italian Black Cat Miraculous wielder.
  • In "New Powers", Marinette mentions out of all the new abilities she has tried so far, her favourite time was when she tried Cat Noir's powers as Lady Noire.
    • Lady Noire, Multimouse, Multifox, and Dragon Bug were first revealed in concept art shown at the 2018 Comic-Con Experience panel on December 6, 2018.[91]
  • Out of every superhero, Ladybug faced a villain with identical powers as herself the most often, with 7 times, those being:
  • Marinette Dupain-Cheng is the first and so far, only known person to wield both the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses at the same time in the current universe.
    • In "Kwamibuster", she used the real Miraculouses, but due to being split, the Miraculouses were not used by the same individual.
    • In "Gamer 2.0", she used a digital replica of the Cat Miraculous, and it is unknown if it possesses all of the real Miraculous' powers.
    • During the New York special, Marinette was briefly given the Cat Miraculous, however she did not use or even wear it.
    • She briefly has the jewel in "Kuro Neko", when Cat Noir gave it up, but like before, she didn't use or wear it.
    • After being retrieved from Monarch in the events of "Deflagration", she again temporarily obtains the gem until she asks Plagg to return it to Cat Noir.
    • She used both jewels as Bug Noire in her final battle against Monarch in "The Final Day".
  • Currently, ten characters know that Marinette is Ladybug: Plagg, Alya Césaire/Rena Rouge, Su-Han, Luka Couffaine/Viperion, Alix Kubdel/Bunnyx, Marinette's counterpart from a parallel universe and that same universe's version of Adrien, Kagami Tsurugi/Ryuko/Riposte Prime, Félix Fathom/Argos and Nathalie Sancoeur. The number rises to fifteen if characters who lost this knowledge or died are counted – Master Fu/Jade Turtle, Adrien Agreste/Cat Noir/Cat Blanc, Alec Cataldi/Wishmaker, Gabriel Agreste/Shadow Moth/Monarch and Cerise Bianca/Timestalker/Spectral Looter.
    • Plagg found out in "The Dark Owl" when Ladybug and Cat Noir de-transformed in front of each other.
    • Alya found out in "Gang of Secrets" after Marinette revealed it to her, unable to stand the pressure of keeping secrets from those closest to her anymore.
    • Su-Han found out in "Furious Fu" after tracking the Miracle Box to Marinette's home and confronting her.
    • Luka found out in "Wishmaker" after Ladybug was hit by the villain's superpower.
    • Alix found out during her stay in the Burrow after looking into the past.
    • The parallel universe's Marinette found out in "Miraculous Paris" when she read Marinette's diary. Also, since the version of Adrien from the parallel universe had discovered Shadybug's civilian identity, he probably also figured out that Ladybug was that universe's Marinette.
    • Kagami found out in "Perfection" after she overheard Marinette complaining to Alya about how hard her life as a superhero is.
    • Félix learned of this sometime after "Perfection" and before "Representation" from Kagami, who told him.
    • Nathalie learned of this after seeing Marinette in the crypt of the Agreste mansion after Gabriel's wish and seeing her transform back into Bug Noire during the events of "Miraculous London/Re-creation".
  • A fan asked Thomas why he gave Marinette ballet shoes, to which he jokingly responded with: "Because ski boots scratch the floor."[128]
  • Marinette reveals a few fun facts about herself on her official Instagram account:
    • She drew her first fashion design ever when she was 5 or 6 years old.[129]
    • She used to have a fear of getting lost in the Metro when she was younger.[130]
    • She used to do dance lessons with her father.[131]
    • She occasionally takes part in taste testing her father's recipes.
    • She sometimes meditates in the morning with her mother.
    • She also created her signature flower design years ago.
    • She always keeps a sewing kit in her school bag.[132]
  • In "Miraculous Shanghai", Wang Cheng mentions that Marinette's great-great-great-grandfather designed clothes for Beijing opera performances.
  • Marinette has stolen both Adrien's, Alya's, and Chloé's phones during the series. Ironically, however, all thefts were unintentional and involved her trying to hide a fact from the respective owners.
.

Q&A w/ Thomas Astruc

  • Marinette is right-handed, but this changes depending on animation errors. In "Guitar Villain", for example, she is seen designing the cover of Jagged Stone's new album with her right hand. Near the end of the episode, however, she signs Adrien's copy of the album using her left hand.
  • In "Mr. Pigeon", Marinette reveals her secret place of inspiration is the Trocadéro.
  • In the webisode "Marinette in Paris", she says that her favorite monument is the Eiffel Tower.
  • In the Korean and French dubs of "The Pharaoh", Alya says that Ladybug might be a 9th grader, while in the English dub of the episode, she says she might be a 10th grader.
  • Marinette sleeps with her pigtails tied up.
  • According to Santa Claus in "Christmaster", Ladybug is the best-behaved kid in the world.
  • In "Gang of Secrets", Marinette counts on her fingers with the Chinese method, instead of the French one. However, in "Sole Crusher", she counts using the French method.
  • Throughout the show, in episodes like "The Dark Owl" and "Simpleman", she is shown to be ticklish.
  • In "Hack-San", Marinette writes down a list of "pro tips" for being a superhero on her phone. It has at least 675 points.
  • According to the Miraculous Secrets card game, Marinette wanted to become a fashion designer ever since she was a child, when she dreamed of tailoring a hat for the Eiffel Tower to protect it from snow.

  84. Marinette turns 14 in "Befana" based on the fourteen candles on her birthday cake at the end of her birthday party. This was also confirmed by crew member Feri González on Twitter. According to multiple characters in "Félix", a year has passed since Émilie's "disappearance", and since Émilie "disappeared" before "Origins", less than a year would have passed since her last birthday. This is further supported by some of Thomas Astruc's tweets, in which he states that all events of the show happen in the same school year.
  85. In Dearest Family, Roland states that Marinette is 14 while trying to convince Gina that gifting Marinette a motorcycle is a bad idea. Tom initially says "Mom, Marinette's last birthday was only a few months ago and you were there" with Roland later saying "Gina, we're talking about a fourteen-year-old girl!" adding "Marinette will be an adult when she's twenty-one!"
