Magical Charms has been a featured article on the front page. This article is related to the Ladybug Miraculous.

This is a Magical Charm. As long as you carry it with you, you can't get akumatized again.

Ladybug to Harry Clown, "Psycomedian"

The Magical Charms are a set of anti-akumatization charms created by the current Ladybug Miraculous holder: Ladybug with the leftover magic from the akumas she purifies. Their purpose is to prevent future akumatizations of previously transformed victims.

Appearance[]

The Magical Charms are small, round, and modeled after a ladybug's shell with a string attached to the top. Each individual charm is unique, taking on the coloration and designs of their recipient's akumatized form. The string can be extended to an unknown length, allowing the charm to be worn as a necklace or tied to clothing.

Creation[]

Once the holder of the Ladybug Miraculous captures and purifies an Akuma, its essence can be converted into a Magical Charm. The object is taken out of the holder's yo-yo and given to the previously akumatized recipient. The Akuma essence is essential for the creation of a Charm; it cannot be made without it.[1] Additionally, multiple Charms can be created from the essence of a single Akuma — their amount depends on how many people were transformed into supervillains in a single akumatization.

Abilities[]

Magical Charm blocking an Akuma

A Magical Charm prevents an Akuma from re-akumatizing its wearer.

When worn, the Magical Charms prevents the Butterfly Miraculous holder from akumatizing a person again. The Butterfly Miraculous wielder can still sense the negative emotions of a person in possession of a Charm, as well as send Akumas to them. However, once the Akuma gets close to an object it wants to infect, a transluscent pink force field will manifest around it, blocking the butterfly. This field will also purify it.[2]

Magical charm Shield purifies an akuma

A Magical Charm transforms into a shield and purifies a Megakuma.

A new ability of the Magical Charms is unveiled in "Confrontation". The Magical Charms react to emotions — they start glowing once their owner feels empowered by emotional strength from others and lose power if their mood worsens. Once the person with the Charm gains enough positivity, the object expands into a large shield, one capable of purifying and warding away Megakumas upon contact. After purifying the Megakuma, the Magical Charm shield will revert back to its original form.

Weaknesses[]

Megakuma breaks the protection

A Megakuma destroys the Magical Charm's barrier and the charm itself.

For a Magical Charm to work, it has to be worn at all times by its recipient. In "Dearest Family", Shadow Moth boosts his own powers and gains the ability to create Megakumas, which can break through the barrier of the Magical Charms. Magical Charms are ineffective against Megakumas without transforming into shields and even those created from the essence of a Megakuma can't protect their owners from them.

Trivia[]

  • For a time, Shadow Moth was unaware of the Magical Charms. In "Queen Banana" he didn't understand why he couldn't akumatize Chloé Bourgeois a second time. Later in "Gabriel Agreste" he becomes aware of them and obtains one from his sentimonster clone.
  • The Magical Charms bear a resemblance to the mini Ladybug charm Alya keeps on her phone. Given that Alya is Marinette/Ladybug's best friend, and that she indirectly helped her create them, it's possible that this is deliberate, if subconscious inspiration on Ladybug's part.
  • In "Ephemeral", "Kuro Neko", "Reunion" and "Perfection", Ladybug may have given August, Ondine, Fred Haprèle, Roger Raincomprix, Rythm, Jalil Kubdel and Xavier Ramier Magical Charms off-screen.
  • As of "Confrontation", six characters have received replacement magical charms: Sabine, Rolland, André, Kagami, Tomoe and Juleka. Rolland, Kagami and Tomoe are also the first to have more than one Magical Charm design, while Sabine, André and Juleka received Charms with the same design.
  • It's unknown whether the Magical Charms protect their owners from Amokization, as all of Shadow Moth's victims who have been amokized and own a Magical Charm, were also akumatized when receiving it (Chloé in "Queen Banana", Mayor Bourgeois in "Mega Leech", and Juleka in "Guiltrip").
  • It's also unknown if the Magical Charms also prevent Kamikotization (the good version of akumatization). Since kamikos have a benevolent nature, it's possible they are able to bypass the Magical Charm's protection and/or strengthen it.
  • Of the French Miraculous superhero team, six members have their own Magical Charms: Zoé, Nino, Kim, Kagami, Sabrina, and Juleka.
