This article is about the anime style reel. You may be looking for another Ladybug. |
The Ladybug PV is a video that was leaked by Jeremy Zag from Zagtoon's YouTube page.[3][4] It was an anime-style reel that was created to interest others in the series, and it eventually led to the CGI series Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir.
A 2D Miraculous Ladybug OVA was confirmed to be worked on by Jeremy Zag.[5] According to Thomas Astruc, the OVA wasn't going to be the same as the PV, the most notable difference being that Adrien Agreste would replace Félix Agreste as Cat Noir.[6] However, by 2017, the project was cancelled.[7]
In-universe, this was used as the "Les aventures de Ladybug & Chat Noir" film created by Thomas Astruc.
History[]
The trailer was created by Toei Animation in an attempt to convince the other developers of the show that it should be done in a Japanese anime art style.[8] They had previously done a movie for HeartCatch Pretty Cure! that was set in Paris, and they tested Ladybug as an anime with two minutes of 2D animations to see if it worked. While Toei was proud of how it turned out, the Japanese art style made it less easy to sell, and there were technical reasons for not using it, such as animating all of Ladybug's spots. This anime eventually ended up becoming the pilot for the CGI series. Instead of making the show in an anime style, the crew went with it as a CGI series, which offered fewer technical problems and felt more natural.[9]
The video "Lady Bug Japanese version" was first uploaded as private on August 26, 2012, but it was accidentally changed to public temporarily on the dates of September 5 and 6, 2012. Despite this upload being currently set as private, some fans re-uploaded the video under the name "Ladybug PV".
On October 26, 2022, the reel was re-released as a bonus feature for the official Blu-ray boxset release of Season 1 and Season 2 in Japan.[10][1]
Features[]
The video is done in a Japanese anime style, and is approximately 3 minutes long. The song that plays with it is a test song by Noam Kaniel with lyrics in "English-like gibberish".[11]

Trivia[]
- ZAG's description on the upload of the video included "Internal use only."[3]
- Originally, the original video will never be re-released to the public even as a special throwback video.[12]
- However, on October 26, 2022, the entire PV was eventually re-released as a bonus feature on the official Blu-ray release box set released in Japan.
- On the official HQ version, both the "Zagtoon, Method, & Toel Animation" title card and the "Coming Soon" end card are left out.
- The official Japanese Blu-ray boxset release for the first two seasons included a small booklet containing concept art for the PV.
- Because the animators complained about animating Ladybug's suit with so many spots, Thomas created a few more designs of the suit that included fewer spots, though none of them made it into the final version.[13]
- It was later revealed that there would be a 2D web series developed alongside the CGI series, and it was assumed that it would be in the style of this video.[14]
- However, there weren't any plans to make any sort of anime version of Ladybug, according to Thomas Astruc. If there was enough support for the CGI series, though, Toei Animation might decide to create it.[15] Also, while he kept all the research and designs from Toei for the anime-style version, he was not allowed to share it.[16]
- Since then, an OVA has been confirmed and is being made by Toei.[5] A 2D web series has also been made, although it's not in the anime style of the Ladybug PV.
- The PV features Félix, the character who was originally supposed to be Cat Noir, although he was eventually replaced by Adrien Agreste, a character created to have a more convincing dynamic with Ladybug as a superhero duo.[17]
- Many elements of the PV have been changed in the CGI series. The designs are different, the characters have been modified, and the show has taken on a lighter tone. All in all, the main concept for the series appears to have stayed the same.
- Even though Marinette, Mr. Pigeon, and the Mime were characters that stayed with the show, the PV versions of them, the character designs, the plot, the powers, and everything else from the show were scrapped.[18]
- The pigeons in the PV were all animated in CGI.
- Outside of the characters who appeared in the PV, none of the other characters who appear in the final product, such as Alya and Chloé, existed during the PV's creation.[19]
- The Art of Miraculous featured a lot of information about the characters and premise of the Ladybug PV:
- The premise of the Ladybug PV was "more like a teen drama".
- Instead of being given the ladybug earrings, Marinette found them on one faithful day. The earrings can bring Marinette good luck everywhere she goes.
- Ladybug isn't wearing a yo-yo in the PV. She instead wears a ladybug-patterned bag on her waist where she carries a variety of weapons.
- Instead of kwamis, both Tikki and Plagg are said to be fairies. They are forcibly bound into their respective jewelry by another fairy named Null.
- The cat ring is said to bring misfortune to its wearer's enemies. But Félix believes that he is cursed by the cat ring and wants to kiss Ladybug in the hope of getting rid of it. The artbook also mentions that Félix isn't "particularly interested in saving Paris" and he instead only interested in trying to date Ladybug.
- Félix is said to be popular with the girls at his school. As Cat Noir, he is much more cheerful. Cat Noir also falls in love with Ladybug after they first meet.
- There's a villainous organization featured in the PV that is roughly translated as Perg from the artbook.
- Both Mr. Pigeon and the Mime are actual supervillains and are members of Perg. Instead of getting their powers via akumatization, they got their powers from their fairies. Neither of their fairies appear in the PV, however. The name of Mr. Pigeon's fairy is roughly translated to Besil, the Fairy of Foolishness. While the Mime's fairy is named Mimic, the Fairy of Miming.
- Both Ladybug and Cat Noir are only active at night to protect Paris from Perg.
- The name of the main antagonist isn't Gabriel Agreste or Hawk Moth. Instead, his name is Richard Sphinx whose supervillain identity is Papillon. He also has a deceased wife, but instead of wanting to revive her like Gabriel Agreste, Richard instead desires for world domination to forget about his wife's passing.
- While they didn't appear in the PV, a fairy named Null was going to be the overarching antagonist. According to the artbook, Null is a fairy companion of Richard Sphinx. But unlike Nooroo who is a kwami connected to the Butterfly Miraculous which gave Gabriel his powers, Null isn't connected to any magical jewelry due to the concept of Miraculouses didn't exist during the development of the PV. Instead, Null is the one who forcibly bound Tikki and Plagg to their respective jewelry.
- While she didn't appear in the PV, Richard Sphinx has a secretary whose name is roughly translated to Adoni Duseo. She is also a supervillain named Poker Face.
- This version has made an apperance as a cameo in Animestro, Rocketear, Simpleman (as movie in 3D universe and bag merchandise), Miraculous New York (as a movie in the airplane's entertainment program) and also as an alternate universe in "Miraculous Paris"
Errors[]
- In the leaked video, toward the end of the scene where Plagg pushes the books off the shelves in the library, there is a brief frame that appears to be an incomplete animation frame.
- The frame was removed on the official HQ release.
- In the leaked video, at the end of Ladybug PV, there is a scene of Ladybug walking in the snow. The sky in this scene is light gray, but one of the very last frames shows the sky to be a dark gray.
- This may or may not be an error, since this error could possibly be the scene fading into the next scene.
