This article is about the superpower. You may be looking for the the ones affected by it or the the faithful servants of Hawk Moth.

The Moth Brooch allows you to give someone their own superpowers and to make that person your devoted follower.

Nooroo, "Ladybug & Cat Noir"

Kamikotization is the special superpower granted by the Butterfly Miraculous to its owner.[1]

When used for evil, the power is called Akumatization.[2]

Description[]

This superpower allows the user to transform an ordinary person into a superhuman with special superpowers, as well as make that person a loyal follower of the user.

Miraculous Owner[]

Monarch listening in on the emotions of Parisians.

The Butterfly Miraculous owner first uses the Miraculous to detect strong emotions. When doing this, they can also hear the thoughts associated with those emotions. They then infuse magical energy into a butterfly, transforming it into a Kamiko or, when used for evil, an Akuma. The Kamiko or Akuma is then sent on its way to find the person it is supposed to bond with. The Butterfly Miraculous owner can also choose to kamikotize or akumatize themself, though they would first have to detransform after empowering the butterfly, as seen in "The Collector", "Dearest Family", "Representation" and "Conformation".

Once the Kamiko/Akuma reaches the intended person, it lands on and magically inhabits an important object belonging to them and establishes a telepathic link between the person and the Butterfly Miraculous owner so the Miraculous owner can convince them to accept the powers they are offering. In the case of an akumatization, the Akuma recipient is strongly compelled to accept the offer, even if it is against their better judgement.

Notably, Kamikotization seems to allow the telepathic conversation to happen at the speed of thought, meaning basically no time passes in the physical world. However, for its evil counterpart, Akumatization, the telepathic conversation happens in real time.

Additionally, the Butterfly Miraculous holder is able to appear inside their victim's mind and conceal their appearance and voice to prevent the victim from discovering their gender and age, as shown in "The Illustrhater", where Chrysalis appears as a gender-neutral silhouette and talks to her recipients in masculine/feminine voices mixed together.

Also in "Daddycop" and "The Ruler", the victims can be shown hallucinating in their minds before akumatization, one example being Roger Raincomprix imagining cradling a baby Sabrina in his arms while he was driving his car in real life.

Once the person agrees to work with the Miraculous owner, the person is enveloped in a magical dark-purple ether. When the ether dissipates, the person is transformed into a super-powered champion. The powers granted correspond with the recipient's personality traits and/or circumstances. It works by transforming the recipients emotions into superpowers; the stronger the emotions the person was feeling at the time of the transformation, the stronger their powers will be.

In addition to giving them superpowers, the transformation can completely cure the champion of physical impairments, such as poor vision or even blindness, seen in "The Bubbler", "Lady Wifi" and "Ikari Gozen", but the impairments will return when the champion is detransformed. The transformation also seems to come with all of the knowledge and muscle memory needed for the champion to use their new powers effectively.

Kamikotizations and Akumatizations remain even when the Butterfly Miraculous owner detransforms, renounces the jewel, or even if the Butterfly Miraculous and/or its owner are destroyed and/or no longer of this world, as seen in "Simon Says", "Miraculous Shanghai", "Animaestro", "Cat Blanc", and "Collusion".

The Butterfly Miraculous owner is limited to only one magical butterfly at a time, however, more than one person can share the Kamiko/Akuma and be empowered at the same time, if they both have some kind of emotional connection to the Kamikotized/Akumatized object, an object that's the same for both/all of them, even if they are not making physical contact with it. In this case, the recipients could either be Kamikotized/Akumatized into as many champions, as seen in "Sapotis" and "Gang of Secrets", or be combined into a single champion with various possible levels of dual identity, as seen in "Oblivio" and "Heart Hunter". The Butterfly Miraculous owner could also bend the rules and create multiple Kamikos or Akumas at once if they first transform someone into a champion with the power to boost other people's powers, or if the Peacock Miraculous is used to manifest a sentimonster with the ability to duplicate Kamikos and Akumas.[3] Another method would be to give the Butterfly Miraculous to another holder. Even if the holder has already created a champion, another Butterfly holder could create an additional champion, even if the current one is still empowered.

In the event that the strong emotions of the intended recipient vanish before they can be transformed, such as if an upset person receives support and love from their friends and starts to feel better, then it would no longer be viable to Kamikotize or Akumatize them. In this case, the magical butterfly can choose, or be telepathically commanded by the Butterfly Miraculous holder, to empower a different person entirely who possesses strong emotions.

Connection[]

As part of the power, the Kamikotized/Akumatized champion becomes the loyal follower of the Butterfly Miraculous owner, and thus follows the desires of the Butterfly Miraculous owner, with a few exceptions. The Miraculous owner can also see and hear through the eyes and ears of the champion. However, the Butterfly Miraculous user cannot control the champion’s mind.[4]

The Butterfly Miraculous owner can telepathically talk to their champion from a distance, and whenever they do, a butterfly-shaped light mask appears over both of their faces. In "Timetagger", it is revealed that a Butterfly Miraculous holder can still communicate with champions even if they were empowered by a different Butterfly Miraculous holder. The same episode also reveals that a champion can initiate telepathic communication with the Butterfly Miraculous holder. Up until then, the communication had only been seen invoked by the Butterfly Miraculous holder. Although not seen yet, since the Butterfly Miraculous holders can also see and hear through the eyes and ears of their champions if the connection is a "two-way street", it should be possible for the champions to also see and hear through the eyes and ears of the holder too.

In "Félix", it is revealed that the Butterfly Miraculous owner can also talk through their champions, much like how a Fox Miraculous owner can talk through their illusions and a Peacock Miraculous owner can talk through their Sentimonsters.

If necessary, the Miraculous owner has the power to inflict pain on their champion, either for disobeying orders or using their powers for the wrong reasons, as seen in "The Evillustrator" and "Pixelator".[5]

In "Sole Crusher", Shadow Moth stated he can sense his akumatized villains weakening. This implies an ability of the Miraculous to sense the emotional state of their champions even after akumatization.

In "Sublimation", it's showed that Chrysalis had evolved her powers to the point of using the connection between her and her akumatized villain to shoot butterfly-shapped energy beams called "anti-akumas". It's possible this new feature is behind the reason the upgrade of Chrysalis' ultrakumas.

De-Kamikotization/De-Akumatization[]

Hawk Moth removing his champion's powers.

Hawk Moth removing his champion's powers.

The Butterfly Miraculous owner can revoke a Kamiko or Akuma at any time with a snap their fingers, thus removing the champion's powers and causing them to turn back into their normal self. However, as seen in "Robostus", the Butterfly Miraculous owner is unable to remove their champion's powers if they are preoccupied with something else.

As shown in "The Illustrhater", the Butterfly Miraculous owner can partially retract the Akuma to ensure their champion's compliance if they don't use their powers in the way they're supposed to.

Alternatively, if the object containing the magical butterfly is broken, destroyed, or otherwise badly damaged, the Kamiko/Akuma will be released from it and the transformation will be undone. When this happens to an Akumatized champion, the person is usually left with no memory of their time Akumatized, although there have been instances in which they have kept some pieces of information. As seen in "Miraculous Paris", kamikotized heroes seemingly keep their memories.

If an Akuma is allowed to fly away after the object is broken, it will multiply into thousands of itself and the duplicates will spread out in all directions and possess any random people they come across. These people are transformed into physical duplicates of the original Akumatized champion; however, these duplicates will be frozen stiff like statues. Meanwhile, the original Akuma returns to the Butterfly Miraculous holder in preparation for the opportunity to re-Akumatize the original Akuma villain; if that happens, the duplicates will come to life and serve as the originals personal clone army. The only way to prevent this is to capture and purify the original Akuma before it can fly away. Currently, the only known way to do so is by using the Yo-yo granted by the Ladybug Miraculous. It is unknown at this time if Kamikos can do the same.

The same akuma that was used to akumatize Cash, and when he was defeated, was used to akumatize Mei Shi.

The same akuma that was used to akumatize Cash, and when he was defeated, was used to akumatize Mei Shi.

After the object containing the Kamiko/Akuma is broken, or the initial target rejects it, rather than letting it fly away and multiply, the Butterfly Miraculous holder can reuse it to turn a different person into a new champion.

In "Crocoduel", it is revealed that if the Kamikotized/Akumatized object is broken between multiple champions the moment the a Kamiko or Akuma inhabits it, and before the transformation is completed, then it is necessary for the pieces of said object to be reunited or fixed before being rebroken or destroyed to release the the Kamiko/Akuma. It's currently unknown if the object also needs to be put back together for the Kamiko/Akuma to be released by either the Butterfly Miraculous user or the Kamikotized/Akumatized individuals themselves.

In the case of the object being broken between more than one champion, there's seemingly no drawbacks, the kamikotized/akumatized people and their powers function normally.

Part of an akuma exiting the half of the object set that it was inhabitated.

Part of an akuma exiting the half of the object set that it was inhabitated.

In "Determination", it is revealed that a Kamiko/Akuma can inhabit multiple object at once, as long as they are all basically pieces of a whole; a stack of pamphlets for example. In this case, if one of the objects is broken, only a fragment of the magical butterfly will be released in the form of a dark mist, and the champion would still remain transformed. All the objects need to broken to release the butterfly completely and return the transformed champion to normal. It is currently unknown if the Butterfly Miraculous holder can revoke the powers if part of the Akuma has been released.

Nooroo[]

The effects of Nooroo's Kamikotization is unknown, but it would most certainly be unconstrained and results in some kind of catastrophe. It's possible that when Nooroo uses Kamikotization, he could incidentally create an incalculable number of Kamikos or Akumas (if he is forced to use his power for evil purposes) and they would start to target people who either have positive or negative emotions.

Weaknesses[]

There are limitations to the power of Kamikotization and Akumatization:

  • It is possible that the holder of the Butterfly Miraculous cannot give a random power to the person they choose to kamikotize/akumatize or choose the power/ability for them and the power must be based on what the victim's emotions, circumstance, desire, and/or personality are or the type of power they want to have.
  • After the powers of the Kamikotized/Akumatized champions are removed, the user can’t do anything to fix the damage their champion has left behind, unless they create another Kamikotized/Akumatized champion capable of fixing the damage.
  • If the Kamikotized/Akumatized champion was created from extremely strong positive/negative emotions, or are too young to think rationally, the user will have a difficult time controlling them.
  • Hawk Moth noticing that his Akuma is too far from range

Hawk Moth noticing that his Akuma is too far from range.

The Kamiko/Akuma or champion must be within a certain range of the Butterfly Miraculous owner for the mental connection to be established; if they are too far away from each other, the Butterfly Miraculous user will lose control of the champion, who will then act of their own accord, and the Butterfly holder would be unable to revoke the Kamiko or Akuma. The maximum telepathic distance seems to be around 150 miles (241.402 kilometers).
    • Also in "Miraculous Paris", the Butterfly Miraculous holder is also unable to purify a Kamiko if the kamikotized object are out of their range in another universe, as Ladyfly and Cat Noir used to their advantage to keep Monarch from removing Guardian Angel's powers.
    • However, in "Intuition", Monarch was able to communicate with Bugfighter from what should have been too far away. However, Bugfighter was an A.I. and Monarch had already hacked into her system, so that may have allowed him to modify his powers a bit.
  • The victim's mind must be fully conscious for the link to work. If the champion becomes unconscious or knocked out then the link will be disconnected.
  • Even though the Miraculous holder is telepathically linked to any champion, regardless of where or when they're from, it can be hard for the holder to find them if they don't know what their champions look like detransformed.
  • Resistance can cancel out the effects of Kamikotization/Akumatization.
  • In "Miraculous Paris", it is revealed that using the special superpower uses vital energy from the Kwami, but also from the miraculous holder. It's one thing for an adult holder, but for an underage holder, who is less physically and mentally capable of handling the strain, there is a security system in place that limits them to only using their special power once and causes them to detransform before it becomes dangerous. However, using the Miraculous for evil overrides the limiter, allowing an underage holder to use their powers to their full potential. As previously stated, a younger holder cannot handle the strain; dark veins of corruption will gradually spread across their body, and they will inevitably be destroyed.
    • However, due to the nature of how Akumatization works, a young evil holder of the Butterfly Miraculous may be less prone to the risk of the strain, if they take the right steps while using the power. This power is limited to only one akuma at a time per user (unless they transform someone into a champion with the power to boost their powers), but the transformed champion can remain empowered, even if the holder is detransformed. This means that a young holder can detransform, feed Nooroo, and transform back, all while keeping their champion active. After that, they are free to release the akuma and then akumatize someone else.
  • What one Butterfly Miraculous owner has done, another can undo. If the Butterfly Miraculous is stolen, or is being used in a fight against another Butterfly Miraculous from an alternate universe or timeline, then the new/alternate universe holder would be able to take away the champion's powers.
    • It is noteworthy that this weakness has only been explained being capable of taking away the superpowers of the champion after the kamikotization/akumatization is complete. It is unknown if the other Butterfly holder would also be able to depower or take control of the kamiko/akuma itself. Nor is it known what would happen if two Butterfly Miraculous holders (whether on the same side or not) telepathically fight over the same champion.
  • The only other way it can fail if the champion that is akumatized isn't real like an illusion.
  • The kamikotized/akumatized victims can use the mental link to track the Butterfly Miraculous holder shown in "Robostus" and "Dark Owl". However even if the other holders that are opposing said holder can convince their champion to work with them then the Butterfly holder can just destroy the link to prevent them from being tracked.
  • From "Derision", if the victim understands why they feel the way they do, as in Marinette dealing with her painful past memories, they can find a way to make peace with them, then the akuma will leave them alone and the process won't be finished.

In addition to the conditions mentioned above, there are times where the transformation itself might fail:

  • Should someone overcome their emotions before being infected, the Kamiko or Akuma will ignore the intended target and go for the closest source of emotions, with or without the user's consent. This will continue as long as the butterfly manages to infect an object.
  • Though the recipient is strongly compelled to accept, the user still needs the person's consent before Kamikotizing/Akumatizing them. If they deny the powers the user is offering them, the Kamikotization/Akumatization simply won't happen. If someone were to refuse the user's offer, then the Akuma or Kamiko will fly out of and away from the object and search for another source of emotion. However, the recipient's will and awareness must be strong enough to both resist the kamikotization/akumization and the user's temptation. Should someone give in, the kamikotization/akumatization will be successful.
    • It is implied that if a person is akumatized more than once, even by another holder, they are capable of developing the willpower to resist the akumatization, as seen with Chloé Bourgeois in ''Miraculer'', Luka Couffaine in ''Migration'', and Caline Bustier in ''Collusion''. When Chrysalis attempted to akumatize Sabrina Raincomprix and Mylène Haprèle, they had already been akumatized by Hawk Moth on more than one occasion and were able to quickly repel the ultrakuma.
      • This condition extends even after the process of Kamikotization/Akumatization is completed, as kamikotized/akumatized champions can free themselves from it if their willpower is strong enough.
        • In the case of multiple champions sharing the same Kamiko or Akuma, one champion can break free while the others remain Kamikotized/Akumatized. Though, this was done by a villain who didn't have the object containing the Kamiko or Akuma. It is unknown what would happen if the one who did have the Kamiko or Akuma was able to break free.
      • As seen in "Migration", the victim can break free by breaking, damaging or destroying their object containing the Kamiko or Akuma before being fully kamikotized/akumatized.
      • As seen in "Catalyst", "Mayura" and "Ladybug", it seems when the holder boosts his powers to be able to create as many Kamikos/Akumas as he/she wants using a champion with that power, they can choose to forcefully transform someone without their consent or establishing a telepathic link first, immediatly transforming them against their will.
        • However, it seems they can also first establish a telepathic link with the champion if they are transformed with these powers for the first time to tell them what powers they are given but this requires their consent.
  • The victim's body must be strong enough to hold the transformation. If not, the transformation will drop and the champion will lose their powers.
  • Even if the champion is about to accept, should the user transform back before their target accepts the offer, the kamikotization/akumatization will be interrupted and consequently fail.
  • The Ladybug Miraculous can be used to create Magical Charms that can ward away Akumas, preventing the power from being used on the person who possesses the Charm. But it's unknown if the Magical charms can protect or affect kamikos in any type of way.
    • Notably, the defense offered by the Magical Charm can be broken through if the Butterfly Miraculous owner manages to evolve their powers and make a stronger Akuma, known as a Megakuma.

Notably, Gabriel Agreste grew and harvested real butterflies to imbue with magic. It is unknown if this is a requirement for the power to be used, or if it's possible for the user to magically make their own butterflies, as seen in Miraculous Paris, Ladyfly was able to release a butterfly from her cane, despite never having harvested any, and after Betterfly had already used his to Kamikotize Alya. Although, it is possible that Betterfly simply kept more than one butterfly in his cane.

Trivia[]

Nooroo explaining Kamikotization with the Miraculous book.

Nooroo explaining Kamikotization with the Miraculous book.

  • Kamikotization is the only known superpower that requires an external factor not provided by the transformation to work: the butterflies.
  • According to Marinette in "Hawk Moth and the Akumatized Villains", the stronger negative emotions a person feels, the stronger they are as Akumatized villains.
  • Champions decide what their suits are like.[6] For example, Evillustrator's suit is based on his design of "Super Nathan".
  • Season 2 was said to respond to the question that Akumatization works on more than just humans, such as robots, animals, and kwamis.[7]
  • The Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses have rather similar powers:
    • Both allows the user to charge small things with magic to infect objects of specific people and telepathic communication with them.
    • They are also the only two known superpowers which the user does not need to say the superpower's name to activate it.
    • Interestingly, both Miraculouses take the form of brooches, which may cast light on the fact that they have such similar powers.
    • They were previously both used for evil purposes.
    • However, a Butterfly Miraculous holder cannot kamikotize themself, unless they detransform, while a Peacock Miraculous holder can use their power on themself.
  • Sometimes, animals or objects are indirectly transformed with the champion, including Roger Raincomprix's car in "Rogercop", Jagged Stone's crocodile Fang in "Guitar Villain", Santa Claus's reindeer in "Santa Claws", Gina Bianchi's motorcycle in Befana" and Chloé Bourgeois' limousine in "Queen Banana".
  • People can be Kamikotized more than once, and it can be either with the same identity and/or powers or something different than before.
  • People feeling insufficient emotion can decline to become empowered, such as those targeted by Hawk Moth if they don't feel despair enough.[8]
    • In "Despair Bear", "Gigantitan", "Zombizou", "Chameleon", "Ikari Gozen", and "Crocoduel", it was shown that the Akuma will stop and turn away if its target has overcome their emotions.
    • In "Catalyst", Hawk Moth's powers were increased, and he no longer needed the consent of his target, though the Akuma still needed intense emotions to take hold of its target.
  • Like Cataclysm, Kamikotization doesn't need the Butterfly Miraculous tool to activate it.
    • However, when Hawk Moth/Shadow Moth/Monarch would leave his lair, he used an Akuma that was contained within his cane.
  • The Kamikotization beings are meant to be superheroes, but the Butterfly Miraculous holder can also make them Akumatized villains, Hawk Moth creating the latter for evil intentions.
    • Akumatized villains are chosen by Hawk Moth because of their negative emotions, like sadness or anger. Hawk Moth specifically goes after people who are in despair and are not happy because it is easier for him to manipulate people into doing bad things.[9]
  • Kamikotization/Akumatization usually happens immediately after the victim gives consent to the Butterfly Miraculous user, there are exceptions:
    • In "The Collector", Gabriel closed his akumatized sketchbook before he was transformed.
    • In "Troublemaker", Penny's akumatization was seemingly triggered by clicking on her pen.
    • In "Zombizou", Miss Bustier applied her akumatized lipstick before she was transformed.
    • In "Reverser", Marc threw his affected notebook into the air and stepped on it before he himself was transformed.
    • In "Silencer", Luka put on the akumatized mask before he was transformed.
  • According to an official book of ambiguous canon, the Butterfly's superpower is called Evilize.
    • This is likely not true, as the book is known to be full of mistakes, and the Butterfly Miraculous' intended purpose is to create superheroes.
    • A second issue of the book calls the Butterfly's superpower Empower.
  • Prior to "Miraculous Paris", Marinette and Adrien were one of very few characters, not to be Kamikotized/Akumatized.
    • In Marinette's case, she was the target of Akumatization in "Zombizou" and "Chameleon", but she calmed herself down in time. In "Mayura", she, as Ladybug, was simply able to evade the akuma in time. She was later infected in "Ladybug", "Elation", and "Derision", but was stopped halfway.
      • "Ladybug": She was almost akumatized into Princess Justice but was stopped because of Nathalie's sickness.
      • "Elation": She was almost akumatized into Unmasker but was stopped due to Cat Noir kissing her.
      • "Derision": She was almost akumatized into Panic but was stopped because she came to terms with her trauma.
        • In an alternate timeline in "Cat Blanc", Marinette was the target of an Kamiko/Akuma, before being saved by Cat Noir.
    • In Adrien's case, he, as Cat Noir, was simply able to evade the akuma in time in "Mayura". Then, he was the unwitting target of Akumatization in "Glaciator 2" before Shadow Moth stopped himself. He was once again targeted in "Transmission" but he calmed himself down in time.
      • In alternate timelines shown in "Cat Blanc" and "Ephemeral", he was fully akumatized into the titular villains.
        • These would later be undone by Ladybug ("Cat Blanc") and Sass ("Ephemeral").
  • It's unknown what would happen if the Butterfly Miraculous was given to another holder and they tried to empower someone who was already Kamikotized/akumatized. It's also unknown what would happen if the holder tried to empower a champion with more than one magic butterfly at once (if they had created a champion to enhance their power to release multiple of them).
  • Kamikotized heroes/Akumatized villains can use other Miraculouses and their Miraculous superpowers in a few different ways:
    • In "Queen Wasp", "Mayura", "Cat Blanc" and "Miraculous Paris", Miraculous holders are akumatized/kamikotized while being transformed.
    • Throughout Season 5, akumatized villains receive Miraculous superpowers through their Alliance rings.
    • In "Miraculous New York", Techlonizer transforms with the Eagle Miraculous into Miraclonizer.
  • Kamikotization/Akumatization acts very similarly to the Miraculous themselves:
    • Both give superpowers to others.
    • Both have some sort of outside force (Kamikos/Akumas- Kamikotization/Akumatization, Kwamis- Miraculous) that inhabits important specific objects and items that allow to give powers to others in the first place.
    • Both of them have the drawback of losing the powers that were granted to the person if the object/item was destroyed (Kamikotization/Akumatization) or if the person is no longer wearing the jewel (Miraculous).
    • It's likely that Kamikotization/Akumatization is meant to be a substitute for people who don't have access to a Miraculous.
