Jardin des Tuileries (literally "Tuileries Garden" in English) is a public garden located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. Created by Catherine de' Medici as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564, it was eventually opened to the public in 1667 and became a public park after the French Revolution. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a place where Parisians celebrated, met, strolled, and relaxed.

Description[]

The Jardin des Tuileries is a huge rectangular park of over 25 hectares. It has many wide avenues lined with elms, lime trees and two white mulberry trees.

The garden has many ponds. The two main ones, the large round pond to the east and the octagonal pond to the west, are surrounded by chairs to allow visitors to sit near them.

The layout of the park creates small spaces separated from the others. In these there are statues, Exèdre ponds, restaurants, a children's playground, but also a carousel.

Finally, at the western ends of the garden, there are two museums with similar architecture:

  • To the northwest, the Jeu de Paume, an exhibition museum of contemporary art.
  • To the southwest, the Musée de l'Orangerie, museums of impressionist and post-impressionist paintings.

From the central nave, one can have a perspective view of the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel and the Louvre Palace to the east, or of the Place de la Concorde and its Obélisque de Louxor, but also the Roue de Paris, to the west.

Statues[]

The Tuileries Garden has many statues distributed in various places. The following statues are visible in the series:

  • At the entrance to the Place de la Concorde, we find the group of statues La Renommée astride Pegasus and Mercury astride Pegasus by Antoine Coysevox.
  • Around the octagonal basin, we find Pomone and Vertumne by François Barois, Cérès ou l'Été by Guillaume I Coustou, L'hiver by Jean-Melchio Raon and Véturie by Pierre II Legros.
