The Miracle Box is the mother of all boxes. It's the very first one that was created, and the one that holds the most powerful magic jewels.
The Chinese Miracle Box, also called the Mother Box, is a jewelry box used to store the Miraculouses when they are not in use. It was the first Miracle Box ever created and the one that possesses the most powerful Miraculouses.
In "Strikeback", Félix Fathom, acting as Adrien, tricks Ladybug into giving him the Dog Miraculous, and using its power, Fetch, he stole her yo-yo, and traded all of the Miraculous that were being kept in the Miracle box to Gabriel Agreste in exchange for the Peacock Miraculous, leaving the Miracle Box empty.
In "Re-creation", before Gabriel makes his wish, he relinquishes all the jewels back to Ladybug and she decides to give all the Miraculouses back to their holders permanently, to prevent all of them from being stolen all at once ever again, leaving the Miracle Box empty once again.
After Master Fu gave up the Miracle Box and named Marinette the new Guardian in "Miracle Queen", the box has now taken on a rounded out appearance and is red, covered in a ladybug pattern with a golden ring around each of the spots, which are the drawers where the Miraculouses are kept when they are not in use. It also has each Kwami's logo on the spots when inhabited, identifying which miraculous is in which drawer (though in some scenes, all of the spots are black). Though Marinette doesn't use it much, as she allows all the Kwamis to roam freely in her room and she can summon the Miraculouses using her yo-yo.
Side drawers
The drawers on the top half of the box are meant to contain the Cat, Bee, Dog, Snake, Pig, Rooster, Ox, Mouse and Fox. The bottom half is meant to contain the Goat, Dragon, Horse, Turtle, Rabbit, Monkey, Tiger, Peacock and Butterfly. It is unknown where the Ladybug Miraculous is meant to go. Although since Ladybug is the guardian, it is likely that there is no drawer meant for her earrings since she is supposed to be wearing the Miraculous.
At the top of the box is a button with the symbol of the Ladybug Miraculous on it that releases the kwamis from the box when it is pushed, even if their Miraculouses are not in the possession of holders.
Exterior
The box was made out of very dark brown wood, had a golden hinge for the lid, and was shaped like an octagon. Four of the sides had gold buttons on the center, and the four sides in between them had two golden buttons that were vertically aligned. Each button had a darker-colored Chinese character on it naming an animal from the Chinese zodiac. The lid of the box at the top had a red design, a circle with patterns in the middle surrounded by wavy lines as the edge. The box included twelve drawers where more Miraculouses were being stored.
On the side of the gramophone in which the wooden box was stored, the Chinese characters for miracle (奇跡) were engraved.
Top level
Inside the box, on the top level, there was a gold outline of a flower with five petals, each petal had a pointed tip, and a center. The color outside of the flower was red. Each section of the flower was meant for a Miraculous.
The center section was raised above the others, and it included the yin-yang symbol, yin having a red outline and yang having a white outline. In yin, there was a red circle with five black spots, which was where the Ladybug Miraculous was placed. In yang, there was a silver paw print within a silver-edged circle, which was where the Cat Miraculous was placed.
Each petal-shaped section was a different color with a darker-shaded circled symbol in the center, and the Miraculouses placed in them represent the Five Elements.[1] The petal section opposite of the lid's hinge was blue with a darker blue peacock symbol, which was where the Peacock Miraculous was placed. The lower left petal section was pink with a purple butterfly symbol, which was where the Butterfly Miraculous was placed. The lower right petal section was green with a darker green turtle shell symbol, which was where the Turtle Miraculous was placed. The upper left petal section was orange with a darker orange fox symbol, which was where the Fox Miraculous is placed. The upper right petal section was yellow with a darker yellow bee symbol, which was where the Bee Miraculous was placed.
Side drawers
The sides of the box had twelve small drawers marked by each button. Each drawer was square, and its inside was colored with a raised circular padded center. One Miraculous was stored in every drawer, each one a Chinese-zodiac-themed Miraculous as labeled by a button with an animal icon. Following is a list of the locations of the zodiac Miraculous starting from the bottom-back and moving around clockwise.
The bottom-back drawer was light blue with a cottontail symbol and held the Rabbit Miraculous.
The top-back drawer was red with a red dragon symbol and held the Dragon Miraculous.
The back-right drawer was turquoise with a turquoise coiled snake symbol and held the Snake Miraculous.
The bottom-right drawer was lighter-brown with a lighter-brown horse symbol and held the Horse Miraculous.
The top-right drawer was white with a white goat symbol and held the Goat Miraculous.
The front-right drawer was mustard-yellow with a brown monkey symbol and held the Monkey Miraculous.
A Ring used by Gabriel Agreste who used it to transfer its power of Adoration, with help from Barkk, to his akumatized villains or to himself.
Currently owned by Sabrina Raincomprix, after Marinette reverted it to its original form.
Access
During Fu's ownership of the box, it was stored in a phonograph. To open it, he must press the eyes of two opposing dragons engraved on a side of the phonograph. The dragons' eyes glow red, and a hatch opens between them, revealing ten buttons. He presses three particular buttons, which causes the phonograph to turn 180 degrees. The top with the record pops off, two sets of doors slide open, and a table spirals upwards from the inside of the phonograph with the box on it.
When the box itself is opened, the drawers containing the Zodiac Miraculous open seemingly independently.
In "Miracle Queen", all of the drawers opened simultaneously when the titular villain opened the box, acting in a rather mechanical form.
According to the "Kwamis" book, on the cover it's implied that the box will open when Marinette clicks one of the spots of which Miraculous she intents to give out or the Kwamis let themselves out.
In "Truth", the Chinese Miracle Box opened when Marinette pressed on the Ladybug Miraculous icon, releasing all the Kwamis but the drawers containing the Zodiac Miraculous seemingly still open independently in "Furious Fu". When the Kwamis re-entered the box in "Furious Fu", they had to go in Ying-Yang pairs.
Starting from "Gang of Secrets", Marinette hides the Chinese Miracle Box in a sewing box that she created. Just like with Master Fu's phonograph, the box is contained in a secret compartment, which opens only if she or Alya click the supplies in the right order.
Magic World
Within the Miracle Box, there is a pocket dimension, described by Tikki as a whole universe, where the Kwamis can gather. It's where they are meant to reside when their Miraculouses are not in use. The doorway to the Kwamis' magic world is in the box's lid.
This inner world is a seemingly endless expanse of night sky, but it is still bright as day. Directly below the entrance is a magic circle which the Kwamis can use to communicate with other, non-present Kwamis on their cycle, or birthday. The world also has a number of various items, toys, artworks, gadgets, etc., which the Kwamis brought in over the years to keep themselves entertained.
There is no way to contact the Kwamis while they are inside their magic world.
The wooden box appears to be patterned after an East-Asian influence, as evidenced by the octagonal construction, the flower-patterned inlay, and the stylized, red relief.
The flower could be styled after the cherry blossom, though it could be based on any other bloom of the Malus genus.
Another option is that it is a lotus, due to the way the petals are pointed outwards, not inwards like a cherry blossom, and the general importance of lotuses across Asia.
The top of the box's original design bears the Chinese symbol/pattern Lu (representing prosperity) or Shou (representing longevity).
The Bee Miraculous stored in a mini version of the past Miracle Box.
The Pig Miraculous being taken out of Ladybug's yo-yo.
1/2
When Fu gives Miraculouses away, each Miraculous is stored in a smaller box that resembles the Miracle box.
Now that Marinette is the guardian, she doesn't need the boxes to transport Miraculouses anymore as she can summon them from the Miracle Box to her yo-yo.
However, in "Re-creation", after restoring the Miraculouses to their original forms, Marinette used the boxes to permanently give them to her friends, with one meant for the Butterfly Miraculous, though it was stolen by Cerise.
The box's design as of "Miracle Queen" resembles the original design of the Ladybug Miraculous.
Similar to Ladybug's yo-yo, the Miracle Box could also apply to the the magic satchel theory, as it is able to hold all the things the Kwamis have collected over the years. Some of the things that are seen in the Kwamis' magical world:
A Piano
Checkers board game
A Grandfather clock
CD records and a phonograph
A Hand Fan
Globes
Various paintings and masks
A Gong
A Shield
A high wheel bicycle
Arcade Video game consoles
Jukebox
A pair of Fanfare trumpets
Barrels
Typewriter
A carousel horse
Rocking horse
Rubik's Cube
Books
In "Feast", it was confirmed that other Miracle Boxes existed but were destroyed. However, Ladybug's Miraculous Ladybug repaired the damaged guardians' temple, including the destroyed Miracle Boxes and therefore the Miraculous.
As of "Miracle Queen", it's unknown if, when the box changes under the condition of new guardianship, if the Kwami's magical world changes with it.
A mini-box version of the current Miracle Box hasn't been revealed yet, but in some production screenshots it has been revealed this Miracle Box also has the mini-boxes just like the previous one. This has not been confirmed yet, since as of season 4, Ladybug retrieved the Miraculous through her yo-yo directly from the Miracle Box itself.
As of "Strikeback", Gabriel has 16/19 of the Miraculouses that were currently in this Miracle Box.
But as of "Evolution", Gabriel has 15/19 of the Miraculouses that were currently in this Miracle Box after losing the Rabbit Miraculous.
In order to diminish the strain the Miraculous superpowers have on him, including the one of the Butterfly Miraculous, Gabriel can only use up to 6/19 of the Miraculous superpowers at the same time.
As of "Intuition", he can only use 14/19 of the Miraculous superpowers despite still having the Snake Miraculous.
When Gabriel made his wish and sacrificed his own life to have it granted, he was in possession of 9/19 of the Miraculous, with 7 of them being at the form of rings.
Since the box changed after Marinette became the Guardian, there have been two versions of the box seen on screen: one where the spots are all black, and one where the spots each depict the symbol of a Miraculous, showing which drawer contains which Miraculous.
Now that Marinette has permanently delivered all the Miraculous under her care to her superhero allies, the Miracle Box remains as it was at the end of season 4: completely empty. However, this time by its guaridan's choice.
It now serves to hold a Miraculous in case its holder needs to get separated temporarily from it for some reason or if they renounce it until the guardian can find a replacement.
