“ | The Moth Brooch allows you to give someone their own superpowers and to make that person your devoted follower! | ” |
The Butterfly Miraculous, also called the Moth Miraculous, is a locket brooch that whenever Nooroo inhabits it, transforms the wearer into a butterfly-themed superhuman with the power of Transmission.
To activate the brooch, the user must speak the transformation phrase: "Light Wings Rise". To deactivate the brooch, the user must speak the detransformation phrase: "Light Wings Fall". To activate the brooch for evil purposes, the user must speak the transformation phrase: "Dark Wings Rise". To deactivate the brooch, the user must speak the detransformation phrase: "Dark Wings Fall".
The brooch is currently owned by Cerise Bianca, who somehow came into possession of it after the wish that was made in "Re-creation".
It was previously owned by Gabriel Agreste, who used it to transform into Hawk Moth, Shadow Moth (when unified with the Peacock Miraculous), and later Monarch after stealing all the other Miraculouses. He used the Miraculous for evil purposes, creating Akumatized supervillains who attempted to steal Ladybug's and Cat Noir's Miraculouses. However, in his final battle with Bug Noire, she knocked the brooch right off him. Since the Guardian stripped him of the Miraculous, he was no longer its holder.
In "Miraculous Paris", it is revealed that an alternate version of the Butterfly Miraculous in an Alternate Universe is used by a superhero version of Gabriel who uses it to transform into Betterfly.
Appearance[]
In general, the Butterfly Miraculous is a locket brooch and glows whenever someone is feeling strong emotions. In charged mode, when Nooroo inhabits the brooch, it's a deep violet button with a black rim and tiny curved lines, some of the lines branch out on the rim of the brooch, a hinge on the left and a slot on the right makes the locket brooch open, in which a photo can be placed, it has four light purple strips coming out of it making it resemble a butterfly or moth. If a minor is using the Butterfly Miraculous uses its Miraculous superpower, the brooch starts running out of power. It makes a beeping sound then the strips and gem start discoloring. (One part is equivalent to one minute) Cerise (or another Butterfly Miraculous holder) has left.
In its activated mode, the brooch lacks the four strips.
In its camouflage mode, the brooch changes color and form depending on whose possession it's in:
- When it was worn by Gabriel Agreste, the brooch was circular and had a thin black lining around it.
- When it was worn by Scarlet Moth, it was red.
Abilities[]
The Butterfly Miraculous grants its wielder superhuman characteristics such as speed, strength, and agility.
Its special weapon is a cane which contains a hidden sword stick which can be used for fighting opponents. Furthermore, the cane can keep butterflies when the holder wants to kamikotize/akumatize people somewhere else and when a kamiko/akuma isn't purified the kamiko/akuma stores itself on the top of the cane waiting for the person to regain their strong emotions again. The cane can be used as an offensive weapon and a means of communication with other Miraculous owners, as seen in "Miraculer".
The Miraculous superpower of the Buttefly Miraculous is Kamikotization, (when used for evil it's called Akumatization). Upon sensing a strong emotion from a person, the holder takes an ordinary butterfly and charges it with energy, turning it into a kamiko, (when it's used for evil it's call an akuma), which is then sent out to possess an object that person has on them. Once the kamiko/akuma posseses this object, a telepathic connection is formed between the recipient and the Butterfly Miraculous wielder. Once an accord is reached, the recipient is transformed into Kamikotized superheroes or akumatized supervillains with their own unique superpowers.
In addition, the wielder can telepathically connect to the kamikotized/akumatized person to talk with them and perceive what that person perceives.[1] If the kamikotized/akumatized person is using their powers wrongly or not the way the holder wants them to, the holder can cause pain to the kamikotized/akumatized person by controlling the person's body to a certain extent or take away their powers.
Even when disguised, the Butterfly Miraculous grants its wielder the ability to sense emotions in order to precisely pinpoint a targeted person's identity. Able to sense various people and their emotions, the wielder usually targets a person with the strongest emotions for the best manipulation.[2][1]
Also, like the Ladybug Miraculous, it is revealed in the episode "Dearest Family" that the only limits Butterfly Miraculous holders have are the ones they put on themselves. When Shadow Moth found out about this, he was able to increase the power of his akumas to make megakumas, giving them the ability to pierce through the force field of the Magical Charms created by Ladybug, thus allowing those who received them to be akumatized or amokized again.
The brooch also has the ability to give the wielder the costume they truly desire.

Trivia[]
- The Butterfly Miraculous is one of three Miraculouses whose powers are not voice activated. The other two are the Snake Miraculous and the Monkey Miraculous.
- Butterflies symbolize, among other things, transformation, change, resurrection, and hope.
- In the French dub of "Ladybug & Cat Noir", the transformation phrase of the Butterfly Miraculous is "Que les ailes de la nuit se déploient!" which literally translates to "Let the wings of the night unfurl!". This is replaced in future episodes by the usual "Transforme-moi".
- Similarly, in the German dub of "Ladybug & Cat Noir", "The Collector", and "Gorizilla", unlike all other Miraculouses, the Butterfly Miraculous has a unique transformation and detransformation phrase. Furthermore, the transformation phrase used in "The Collector" is different from the phrase used in "Ladybug & Cat Noir" and "Gorizilla". Starting from "Queen Wasp", however, the phrase is the same like all other Miraculouses.
- In the Korean dub of "The Collector", the transformation and detransformation phrases of the Butterfly Miraculous are exactly the same, both being "Spread the wings of darkness" when translated. However, it is changed to "Reap the wings of darkness", starting with "Reflekdoll".
- In the French comic adaptation of "Ladybug & Cat Noir", Nooroo states the Butterfly Miraculous represents generosity.
- Later, Miraculous Mexico confirmed on their Twitter that it represents transmission.
- The Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses have rather similar powers.
- Both allows the user to charge small things with magic to infect objects of specific people and telepathic communication with them.
- They are also the only two known Miraculous superpowers which the user does not need to say the superpower's name to activate it.
- Interestingly, both Miraculouses take the form of brooches, which may cast light on the fact that they have such similar powers.
- However, the holder of the Butterfly Miraculous cannot be kamikotized/akumatized while transformed (though they can be if they revert to their civilian form first), while the Peacock Miraculous holder may manifest a sentimonster from their own emotions by using an amok on themself while still transformed.
- Unlike akumatization however, amokization can infect an object that's been destroyed, although it is still possible to damage it further to release the amok.
- Also, unlike akumatization, a sentimonster can only be controlled by the one who possesses the object containing the amok, while the power to control akumatized supervillains belongs solely to the Butterfly Miraculous owner.
- The Butterfly Miraculous has the most powers out of all the known Miraculouses with six, though it is arguable that almost all of these powers are different parts of the same superpower:
- Kamikotization/Akumatization
- Empathy
- Telepathy
- Bodily control
- Controlling butterflies
- Power removal
- As shown in "Simon Says", akumas and akumatized villains can retain their powers even when the Miraculous holder isn't transformed.
- However, as shown in "Mayura" and "Ladybug", when Scarlet Moth de-transforms, willingly or not, everyone who was akumatized by his scarlet akumas returns to normal.
- That is due to the fact those akumatized villains were created because of another akumatized villain who turned his cane into the power source of those scarlet akumatizations.
- Similarly, they will retain their powers even after the holder and/or the jewel are destroyed, as seen in "Cat Blanc" and "Miraculous Shanghai".
- However, as shown in "Mayura" and "Ladybug", when Scarlet Moth de-transforms, willingly or not, everyone who was akumatized by his scarlet akumas returns to normal.
- The Butterfly Miraculous' user is seemingly immune to the effects of the akumatized villains, as Hawk Moth wasn't trapped in one of the Bubbler's bubbles despite being an adult, nor was he turned into a knight from Darkblade's barrier.
- However, this doesn't apply when the Miraculous is inactive, as shown in "Simon Says", nor to non-magical powers as shown in "Robostus".
- However, in "Catalyst", not only was Hawk Moth affected by the titular akumatized supervillain, he counted on it to fulfill his plan.
- Also, in "Cat Blanc" and "Miraculous Shanghai", Hawk Moth was destroyed by his own akumatized victims.
- In "Simpleman", he was also affected by the titular akumatized supervillain.
- The Butterfly Miraculous is the first known known Miraculous that is being used for evil. The second is the Peacock Miraculous.
- If used for good, the Butterfly Miraculous can kamikotize people into superheroes instead of akumatize people into supervillains. It can also give people hope to fight when the world is in danger.[3]
- The power to cause pain to an kamikotized person or remove their powers is supposed to be a safeguard to prevent the person from using their powers wrongly or evilly.[4]
- "Timetagger" suggests that Gabriel's successor as Hawk Moth will also be a villain.
- This proves to be true when Cerise Bianca acquires the brooch from the Agreste Mansion after Gabriel's defeat.
- Since the jewel can be used for both good and evil, the Butterfly Miraculous holder can sense both positive and negative emotions regardless. Due to past holders it's likely before the jewel was Gabriel's; the goods ones used it's power to calm them down and talk them out of causing trouble. Because maybe they experienced or already knew what was going to happen if they gave powers to those who don't think straight. There's also the possibility that the good holders would use both negative and positive emotions to find champions that could fight against other villains/tyrants.
- Like the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses, the legacy of Hawk Moth dates back to Ancient China and is over 5000 years old.
- In "Ladybug & Cat Noir", the inactive Miraculous is large enough to sit in Gabriel's palm and contain a photo, but in "The Collector", the inactive Miraculous is notably smaller, being the same size as the active one is without wings.
- Currently, there is a photo of Émilie inside the brooch.
- Fu mentions in "Ladybug & Cat Noir" that he thought the Butterfly Miraculous had been lost forever.
- As revealed by Thomas Astruc, season 2 would explain how Gabriel found the Miraculous after it was lost.[5] The cited tweet has since been deleted, and no episode of season 2 explained this. It is likely this plot was delayed until a further season.
- In "Feast", Fu's past and him losing the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses is seen.
- As revealed by Thomas Astruc, season 2 would explain how Gabriel found the Miraculous after it was lost.[5] The cited tweet has since been deleted, and no episode of season 2 explained this. It is likely this plot was delayed until a further season.
- In "Hawk Moth and the Akumatized Villains", Marinette plans that after Hawk Moth's defeat, the jewel will be used the way it is meant to using positive emotions to create heroes.
- Without realizing it, by putting Ladybug and Cat Noir in situations requiring the use other Miraculouses, Hawk Moth did have a hand in giving rise to the other Miraculous wielding heroes, which is the intended purpose of the Butterfly Miraculous and because of him putting the heroes in said situations, he fed his own greed,
- According to Gabriel in "Nathalie as seen by Gabriel", it was actually Nathalie that found the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses.
- This is mostly confirmed in "Passion", where it is revealed that Nathalie used to be a hunter for magical artifacts and was hired by Gabriel and Émilie to help them find the Miraculouses. Even if the three of them found the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses together, Nathalie must have been the one to track them.
- Given the confirmation that the transformation phrase for a Miraculous is dependent on whether it is being used for heroic or villainous purposes, it is likely Nooroo's activation phrase would be different with a heroic holder.
- This is proven true in "Miraculous Paris" as alternative Gabriel Agreste is heard uttering the phrase ¨Light Wings Fall¨ when detransforming. By this we can assume the transformation phrase to be ¨Light Wings Rise¨ in English.
- The Butterfly Miraculous is the only Miraculous to have been used by only a single holder in-show, and the only Miraculous to have only one known camouflaged form.
- Also, the Butterfly Miraculous is the only one from the Chinese Miracle Box that hasn't been wielded by a minor that is until "Miraculous Paris", where Marinette unified Betterfly's and hers to become Ladyfly and "Re-creation", when Cerise gets her hands on the Miraculous.
- In "Miraculous Paris", it will be revealed that the Miraculouses also exist in alternate worlds and that, in one specifically, the Butterfly Miraculous is used for good by a man whose superhero name is Betterfly.
- Ironically, that superhero's enemies he faces are the holders of the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses who act as supervillains, with that being the total opposite of the main universe.
