—Bertrand, "Action" | ||
Bertrand King is the former main antagonist of the episode "Action". He is a plastic manufacturer and the owner of his company.
In "Action", after an anti-plastic movement initiated by Marinette and her friends worldwide, causing André Bourgeois and Gabriel Agreste to give false deniability on their role on the plastic pollution on the Seine on television and speaking out against things made of plastic such as his Morpho fans, Bertrand was akumatized by Monarch into King of Plastic, a supervillain with the power to turn people into plastic and received the power of the Bee Miraculous through his Alliance ring. He also received a Magical Charm from Ladybug to prevent him from being re-akumatized.
Appearance[]
Physical Appearance[]
Bertrand is a plus-sized man with fair skin and blue eyes, as well as thick eyebrows, white hair and a mustache.
Civilian Attire[]
He is wearing a pink jacket, under which is a light pink shirt with a collar and has a large red bow tie. He also wears white trousers and pink half-boots with a decorative bow. In front of his eyes he wears large glasses with gray frames.
As King of Plastic[]
King of Plastic acquired a pink skin tone, his eyes were brown with vivid yellow sclera, and his mustache and eyebrows were made of smooth light purple plastic. The head was covered with a black cloth. On his head he wore a hat resembling a crown, with multicolored inset balls.
The color scheme of the suit was pink and black. He had a suit with a thick collar, in the center of the suit there was a large heart with two curls. The barges were decorated with two pink balls. A rim in pink and black stripes was visible on the belt. Yellow hemispheres were visible on the knees, and at the bottom of the buff with a golden ornament on top. Two purple balls were visible on the shoes, similar to shoulder and forearm decorations.
Personality[]
Matching his outside appearance, Bertrand possesses a very approachable and a bit jovial demeanor. He is willing to hear other people's opinion and is quite honest with everything he says, not being afraid to admit the real reason behind his selling tactics. His honesty also applies to complimenting other people's efforts when they deserve it. That side of him actually makes him look very charismatic, but it also deviates the attention from his darker side.
The truth is that Bertrand used to be blinded by his obsession with plastic. He loved plastic and was happy to surround himself with plastic things, possibly a consequence of being the owner of a company that fabricated plastic items. Even with concerning teenagers trying to draw attention to the problem of plastic pollution and convince him to reduce plastic consumption, he showed no concern about the environment, with the main thing for him being the wealth obtained thanks to plastic that people kept buying. As long as it made profit and was useful to him, it was alright, and the environment wasn't a priority in his eyes.
However, despite that, he is not above admitting when he is wrong. When Ladybug and Cat Noir showed him the problem of plastic waste by using garbage collected from the Seine to defeat him, and in this way showing him how the animals living in the river felt by being surrounded by waste, Bertrand immediately changed his behavior. He decided to help solve the problem of plastic waste by becoming an example towards plastic recycling and the use of reusable and biodegradable materials.
As King of Plastic, his personality hadn't changed much, as he still had a deep love for plastic. However, he became vengeful towards the people that wronged him, like the ones who turned away from him after the environmental action of students. He did not hesitate to turn into plastic the people who betrayed him – the mayor and Gabriel – and those who stood in his way: police officers, Adrien's bodyguard or superheroes.
Abilities[]
As a Civilian[]
Bertrand is a particularly gifted businessman who heads the world's largest plastic manufacturing company.
As King of Plastic[]
He had the ability to turn anything into plastic. He could even turn people into plastic statues of different colors if he touched the victim with the tip of the cap of his pen-turned-lance. With the addition of her own powers, King of Plastic got from Monarch the power of the Bee Miraculous, Venom, that gave him the ability to paralyze his opponent by stinging them with the nib of his pen-turned-lance. He used this power to immobilize opponents and turn them into plastic, in order to shout the phrase "Plastic is fantastic!"
Relationships[]
Gabriel Agreste[]
Bertrand maintained a good relationship with Adrien's father. Although angry that Gabriel lied to the news about his talent being misappropriated by Bertrand's company, he forgave him after he was de-akumatized.
André Bourgeois[]
Little is known between the relationship between Bertrand and André, but it can be assumed that they were friends.
