Description[]
Located on a high point that joins the 8th, 16th and 17th arrondissements of Paris, the Arc de Triomphe is approximately 50 metres high, 45 metres long and 22 metres wide.
Its facades feature several high reliefs, four of which are particularly well-known:
- The Departure of the Volunteers of 1792 (La Marseillaise), by François Rude. This sculpture features volunteers with the appearance of ancient heroes being urged to fight by a winged figure, an allegory of Victory.
- The Triumph of 1810, by Jean-Pierre Cortot. Using figures from antiquity and the allegory of Victory, it is a representation of the triumph of Napoleon Ist.
- The Resistance of 1814, by Antoine Étex.
- The Peace of 1815, by Antoine Étex.
Under the arch is the famous Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a tomb surrounded by black terminals linked together by black chains. It consists of a slab of Vire granite on which is inscribed an epitaph in honor of the soldier, as well as a cannon mouth placed in the center of a bronze shield where the Eternal Flame burns.
During important events, a French flag is displayed under the arch.
