| “ | Things were PURR-FECT until Hawk Moth found out about everything. Once the cat is out of the bag, it's only a matter of time 'till everyone knows. It was our love that did this to the world, m'lady. | ” |
Adrien Agreste is one of the two main protagonists of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir and Miraculous World (alongside Marinette Dupain-Cheng), and a minor character in Miraculous World: London - At The Edge of Time and Miraculous World: Tokyo - Stellar Force. He is a human-sentimonster created by his late mother Émilie Agreste from her emotion of love. He is also a former student in Miss Bustier's class at Collège Françoise Dupont in Paris, France, and a former fashion model for his late father's brand. He is currently in a relationship with Marinette Dupain-Cheng.
With the Cat Miraculous, when inhabited by Plagg, Adrien transforms into Cat Noir ("Chat Noir" in the French version), a black cat-themed superhero with the power of Destruction, tasked with protecting Paris from akumatized villains, as well as other dangers.[70] He is the second-in-command of The Miraculers.
In "Syren", after Marinette helps Master Wang Fu translate the Grimoire in order to find a way to give Ladybug and Cat Noir the ability to transform into different powered up forms, he is able to make the potion that grants the aqua form. Adrien is able to use it to become Aqua Noir, which gives him a specially modified aqua suit with fins on his feet, granting him enhanced swimming capabilities, as well as allowing him to breathe and speak underwater.
In "Frozer" when the titular akumatized supervillain freezes over Paris to turn the city into his domain, Adrien uses Marinette's Magic Camembert to transform into Ice Cat, which gives him a specially modified ice suit with skates on his feet, granting him enhanced skating capabilities as well as allowing him to withstand subzero temperatures.
In "Reflekdoll", Adrien temporarily obtained the Ladybug Miraculous, which, when inhabited by Tikki, would transform him into a ladybug-themed superhero Mister Bug,[71] gaining the power of Creation.[72]
In "Desperada", Adrien temporarily obtained the Snake Miraculous, which, when inhabited by Sass, would be able to transform him into Aspik[73], a snake-themed superhero with the power of Intuition, gaining the ability to go back in time for a Second Chance. He later returned the Miraculous after failing for the 25,913th time to save Ladybug from the titular villain.[72]
In "Cat Blanc", in an alternative future, Cat Noir, conflicted between his loyalty towards his father and the girl he loved, was akumatized by Hawk Moth into Cat Blanc, a white cat-themed supervillain with the power of infinite destruction. Later, because Ladybug fixed her mistake, the alternative future was erased, including Cat Noir's akumatization.
In "Miracle Queen", after removing the Snake Miraculous from a brainwashed Viperion, Adrien unified the Snake Miraculous with the Cat Miraculous to become Snake Noir[72] ("Serpent Noir" in the French version).
In "Miraculous World: New York - United Heroez", after Mr. Ramier had been reakumatized into Mr. Pigeon for the 51st time, Cat Noir became Astrocat to stop Mr. Pigeon from taking over the moon for him and his pigeons. Astrocat has the power to travel long distances swiftly via flight, including in space.
In "Ephemeral", after finding out the truth about his parents, Adrien, affected by an akuma, gave the Cat Miraculous to Shadow Moth/Shadow Noir and was akumatized into Ephemeral, a supervillain who made time faster or sped up the time it took for a Miraculous holder to detransform. Later, after Sass used Second Chance, Ephemeral was erased from reality.
In "Kuro Neko", after giving up on being Cat Noir due to feeling unappreciated by Ladybug, Adrien was convinced by Plagg to create a brand new identity as a holder of the Cat Miraculous, becoming Cat Walker ("Patte De Velours" in the French version), even donning a brand new suit. He later returned to his original hero persona.
In "Evolution", after future Bunnyx was paralyzed during a fight against Monarch, Cat Noir took her Rabbit Miraculous and combined it with the Cat Miraculous to become Rabbit Noir, gaining the power of Evolution, so he and Ladybug could keep on fighting the supervillain and prevent him from changing the past or discovering their true identities.
In "Miraculous Paris", he was kamikotized by Betterfly into Celesticat, an angelic-cat-themed superhero to help Ladybug and Betterfly escape from Shadybug and Claw Noir.
In "Passion", to avoid Safari's venom bolts, Adrien temporarily used the Ladybug Miraculous and once again became Mister Bug.
In "Revolution", after seeing all the Parisians willingly stand up and fight injustice with their own hands and refuse to turn their backs on Ladybug and Cat Noir, Adrien evolves his powers, and now, he doesn't detransform after using his powers, and is able to cast as many Cataclysms as he pleases without the need to recharge. Then, he was sent to London by his father, and yet, shared a kiss with Marinette before leaving.
In "Representation", after being sent to London, Adrien returns to Paris as Astrocat hoping to find Marinette so he could tell her his identity and stay together, but after being struck with Nightormentor's dust and the fear of putting her in danger, he backs off the idea and returns to London.
In "Conformation", when Monarch commenced his global plan against the French Duo, because he knew he wasn't in the right state of mind to wield the power of Destruction safely and the fears of his nightmares, Adrien sent Plagg back to Paris with the ring to help Ladybug.
In "Re-creation", after Monarch's defeat and wish, Adrien reclaimed his Miraculous and rejoined Ladybug and their whole team in Paris.
In "Climatiqueen", after having difficulty looking for his passion and trying out various activities with Marinette, he meets Sublime while trying out running alone, and develops a passion for running.
In "Revelator", after Ladybug's secret is revealed to Rena Rouge due to the powers of the titular villain (with him believing it's her secret identity), Cat Noir is able to evolve his Cataclysm and turn it into a new superpower called Miraculous Cat Noir that allows him to destroy anything "created" by an akumatized villain, like exposed secrets.
Appearance[]
Physical Appearance[]
Adrien is a fair-skinned teenage boy standing at an average height, and is about half a head taller than Marinette Dupain-Cheng with short, brushed-back blonde hair that is swept to the right, emerald-green eyes, and a rosy tint on his cheeks, nose and the tips of his ears. In the first five seasons, his hair was curved and stuck upwards with a small tuft bending to the right at the top.
From Season 6 onwards, his hair is combed neater, facing downwards more.
Civilian Attire[]
In the first five seasons, Adrien wore a white button-down jacket with an upturned collar and sleeves rolled up above his elbow, which he kept unbuttoned, and a pocket at the right. Underneath, he wore a black t-shirt with five horizontal stripes around the chest, which were colored, from top to bottom, yellow, brown, bright green, navy blue, and purple. He wore blue jeans and a logo of a black butterfly in a circle on the sides. In addition, he wore orange sneakers with white laces. On the ring finger of his right hand, he wore the Cat Miraculous, which was silver when he wasn't transformed. He sometimes carried the lucky charm bracelet Marinette gave him in his pocket. Starting from "Re-creation", he wore the combined Graham de Vanily Twin Rings on the ring finger of his left hand.
From Season 6 onwards, Adrien keeps his shirt and jacket, but his jacket is wrinkled and creased, no longer having the right pocket from before. He also now wears white sneakers with matching laces, black lining above the sole, and a linear black section behind the tongue at the sides. He still wears the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings on his left ring finger.
As Cat Noir[]
Adrien as Cat Noir.
In the first five seasons, Cat Noir had cat eyes with green sclerae, dark green irises and slitted pupils. His hair became slightly longer, untamed, and covered his normal ears, with his bangs being brushed to the middle of his head. Cat Noir wore a textured black skin-tight catsuit made of a material similar to leather[74] with small metal studs on his shoulders and abdomen with thin black linear accents around the aforementioned body locations and arms.
He wore matching gloves that had claws on the fingertips and dark gray ankle-length boots with black lining and a horizontal line in the middle, a hidden wedge, silver pawed toes, and paw-shaped treads. He also had black cuffs with a metal stud to accent the top of the boots and wrists. He had a golden bell on his neck, connected to a silver zipper on the front of his costume on a black zipline, and a long, detachable black belt that wrapped around his waist and hung out from the back like a tail with a metal stud securing it at the left, and there was a silver rectangular buckle and small holes lined in silver at its end. He wore black cat ears made of the same material as his suit[75] with a silver stud at the bottom front and a black mask with part of it pointing at the bridge of the nose to cover his face. When transformed, his ring turned black and gained a bright green paw print on its face. He kept his staff attached to his lower back. His suit had a hexagonal pattern.
Cat Noir's new and permanent modified suit in Season 6 onwards.
From Season 6 onwards, his appearance becomes slightly altered; his hair is brushed to the right, and all of the studs become diamond-shaped. In addition, his torso, shoulders, arms, and waist are a dark gray, with there being a silver zipline in the middle. He also has pockets in place of the linear accents around his waist, which tilt downwards diagonally on either side. His belt is also now secured at the right instead of the left. His mask also sharpens at the bottom corners in a slight angular cut. He also now has the symbol of the Cat Miraculous on his back, which is black and more angular in design.
As Mister Bug[]
Adrien as Mister Bug.
Mister Bug's hair was the same as his civilian form unlike Cat Noir, covering the Ladybug Miraculous. On his face was a red mask with black spots in a symmetrical design, his eyes were still green, and the waterlines were black. He wore a black, turtlenecked skin-tight superhero jumpsuit with red accents on his upper torso, extending to his abdomen, thighs, on his forearms ending on a point in the back of his hands, and his shins which resembled boots with black soles, all of which were covered in black symmetrical spots. He had red shoulder pads and armor in his chest which were covered in black spots. The yo-yo, when not in use, was tied on his waist with a black string.
As Aspik[]
Adrien as Aspik.
Aspik's eyes had vivid green irises and golden sclera with slit pupils. He wore a dark turquoise skin-tight suit with a hexagonal texture. He had teal hands with a downward point on the wrist to accent the diamond-shaped segments on his elbows, the shoulder pauldrons, the angular torso piece that pointed in an elongated end, and the pentagonal knee pads, the armor being lined in black. There were also pale yellow diamond-shaped accents on top of the knee pauldrons, on the palm, and in the middle of the chest with black lining. There was also angular black lining connecting to the chest piece which wrapped around the chest and past the thighs. Aspik also had a dark teal skullcap covering his hair and an angular dark teal mask with thin black lines jutting out to accent his armor details, and small pale yellow fang-shaped pieces below.
He wielded a lyre as tool, which was located on his back when not in use. He wore the Snake Miraculous, a bangle, on his left wrist.
As Snake Noir[]
Adrien as Snake Noir.
Snake Noir's costume resembled both of his traits as Cat Noir and Aspik. His suit was black, with Aspik's chest armor and knee pauldrons, but without the shoulder pads. In addition, the armor is now mostly lined in black without any yellow accents, and there is now armor on the front of the lower arm to match the knee pauldrons that now have a black W-shaped point on top connecting to the lining. Snake Noir sported Cat Noir's boots, pockets, and his belt, which had a teal colored-tip composed of three large vertical scales and the holes lined in teal, and green cat eyes. Alongside the usual black cat ears but with teal insides, his hair was again covered by a black helmet, and his mask from Aspik is retained. He wore the Cat and Snake Miraculouses on his right ring finger and wrist.
As Cat Walker[]
Adrien as Cat Walker.
Cat Walker had dark green hair that he parted on the left with a few wild strands and his hair tied in a short ponytail at the nape of his neck. He also had a pair of fake black cat ears in his hair. He had the same eye color and cat-like slit sclerae as Cat Noir. His mask was black, similar to Cat Noir's, but it had a horizontal golden stripe across the top with a dip in the middle where the edge of the mask dipped. His costume was dark gray and looked similar to an 18th century military uniform with six gold paw print-shaped buttons, and another two on the backs of his shoulders, with the top two having gold cords connecting to each other and the back, and gold lining on the middle of the torso, sides of the neck, shoulders, and above the arm. He had tall black boots that reached a little past his knees with a point upwards and long black gloves that almost reached his shoulders. His shoulders were also black and the ends of his fingers had pointed curved cat-like claws. Unlike Cat Noir, he had no bell. His long black belt was tied around his waist and extended into a fake tail in the back along with a gold belt buckle on the front in the shape of a right angle pointing to his left.
As Rabbit Noir[]
Adrien as Rabbit Noir.
Most of Rabbit Noir's suit remained black, gaining light blue highlights on his shoulders, lower arms, legs, boots and belt with a white cotton ball on the end. He maintained his ears but they changed from cat-eared ones to rabbit-eared ones with black outsides and blue insides. His bell changed from gold to white, keeping the Rabbit Miraculous on his waist and the umbrella on his back. He also gained light blue markings under his eyes on his mask.
As Cat Blanc[]
Adrien as Cat Blanc.
Cat Blanc had a similar appearance to Cat Noir, except that his skin was very pale, and his catsuit was completely white, including the bell and the cat ears. His hair was also white, and his eyes were icy blue instead of their normal green.
As Ephemeral[]
Adrien as Ephemeral.
Ephemeral had pale, light grayish heliotrope colored skin and glowing pupil-less brilliant magenta eyes and wore a moderate magenta skin-tight outfit that covered most of his body, except for his eyes and the area of his nose and mouth.
The suit possessed shoulder pads, gloves and knee-high boots that were a darker shade of moderate magenta and glowing pink outlines and a black line around the waist. There were sets of three black arrows pointing down on his torso and limbs and a pointy helmet on his head with the same color of the suit with a black coloration at the front outlined by a glowing pink line and black arrows at the sides. All the arrows of his body started to flicker when he started accelerating one's time until all of the arrows were lit up and the acceleration took effect.
As Celesticat[]
Adrien as Celesticat.
Celesticat had an extremely similar appearance to Cat Blanc, but with green eyes and a pair of large, angel-like wings for flight. His body also gave off a brilliant light.

Personality[]
Adrien fist bumps with Nino after he wins "The Challenge".
Adrien is a charismatic dreamer, but he is also often shy, a bit reserved and considerably innocent and naïve — particularly due to his unfamiliarity with much of the world beyond his father's reach.[76] According to Nino Lahiffe, because of it, he resembled a baby bird afraid to come out of his shell. Due to his kind heart with or without his mask, Adrien always tries to see the best in others; in the case of those that have mean or cruel intentions, like Lila Rossi and Chloé Bourgeois, he's willing to give second chances believing that with patience and time, anyone can change. His patience does have limits though, as he ended his friendship with Chloé after she refused to apologize for her actions in "Queen Banana", even though they reconciled in the next episode, most likely due to his unwillingness to abandon a friend. However, his patience with Chloé finally ended when he found out about her actions in "Derision", ending their friendship.
However, in "Revelation", he saw the difference of those who mean well and those who don't reach the limit of their patience with those who are manipulative, such as Chloé and Lila as he becomes blunt to Lila, and ends his friendship with Chloé.
Despite that, again due to his lack of social interactions and naivety courtesy of his parents' overprotective upbringing, he can be oblivious at times to the darkness or mischief in the hearts of others, like his father or his cousin. This also extends to the situations of others like in the Season 4 finale; if he thought more clearly and remembered as Cat Walker it is possible he also could be akumatized like Ladybug and everyone else when she mentioned it as her greatest fear and tried to protect him, possibly oblivious of his own actions such as when he asked to take on some of his partner's responsibilities to prevent Ladybug's akumatization. However, by that point, Adrien's increased loneliness and inability to process his feelings in a healthy way most likely compromised his judgement, due to either his absent but overbearing father or the secrets he kept leaving him unable to safely vent his frustrations, talk about his feelings and ask for advice since he did not have someone to talk to like Marinette had Alya and Luka. Furthermore, while Plagg truly cares about Adrien, his own lack of maturity compared to the more empathic Tikki might have also contributed to his inability to emotionally process things correctly, causing trouble for him, like his advice in "Miraculous New York" to hide the truth from Ladybug. This notably changed in Season 5, as he spent more time with Nathalie and she openly showed him affection, gave him advice and since quitting modelling allowed him more time to talk to his friends like coming to Luka for advice. The growing bonds he has with Nathalie and Luka, as well as Marinette, caused him to become more mature and emotionally stable. His reaction in "Rocketear", when being told by Nino of him and Alya knowing their identities through Ladybug (though Adrien didn't know she did it in an emergency), while somewhat justified since he knew no one but Ladybug must know the Miraculous holders' identities, and also came from him not realizing that Nino and Alya's situation is different from his and Ladybug's since they own the Miarculouses that Shadow Moth needs and through his discussion with Plagg following the incident, he chose to keep his feelings to himself due to Ladybug already being mentally and emotionally strained by her new role as Guardian.
Even though he is not very openly emotional to most people, he is friendly, empathetic, understanding, supportive, selfless, wise, and encouraging to others; and in hard times, he will defend his friends against those who would do them harm. This caused him to take the blame for Chloé's prank in "Stoneheart" and often being forgiving of her nasty behavior because she was his only friend for a long time, though he eventually cut ties with her when he made more friends and she became more mean spirited. His will for exposure, change and making friends definitely complements his personality, although it is a bit of a struggle for Adrien due to his busy schedule. He always put the needs and feelings of others above his own even with those like Plagg or Chloe, with or without his mask, he connects with the hearts of others before speaking his feelings of anger or sadness. He does it with many of his classmates and friends. Like with Marinette to think before she speaks and to be more open-minded, positive, and patient when she dislikes people or feels emotions of anger. Or with Kagami to be more understanding, open-hearted, and compassionate when it comes to others who make her feel hurt or insecure. Indeed, Marinette fell in love with Adrien not because of his looks but his kindness in apologizing for the gum incident (despite not being his fault) and giving her his umbrella, despite her not giving him a chance to explain himself in "Stoneheart". Furthermore, his kindness and sociable personality makes him unique. Despite the loss of his mother, the emotional abuse of his father and his only long time friend being the egotistical Chloé, Adrien always remained kind and understanding, unlike her, who, despite having an absent mother, had numerous chances to become better, but refused, the arrogant and selfish XY or the rich kids at the Diamond Dance in "Emotion". Initially at least, despite his limited interactions, he was also more warm and sociable than Kagami who, despite being a good person who also sought to make new connections and a loyal friend, came off as cold and unapproachable but improved with his and Marinette's help. Alongside her, Adrien was also able to emotionally reach Felix in "Emotion", make him bring everyone back and start to change his ways.
Adrien's shyer and gentler characteristics can be observed in awkward, uncomfortable situations or scenarios with particular people. This was shown when he nervously asked Marinette to sign his copy of Jagged Stone's new album, shyly greeted Ladybug in "Simon Says", posed with Marinette as their alter-egos in Clara Nightingale's music video and tried to make Marinette more comfortable around him, but froze up and instead played a joke during "The Puppeteer 2".
Adrien calls his father, upset that he hasn't shown up for Career Day.
While liking to have fun, Adrien is more serious, obedient, somewhat insecure, and less lively due to his strict upbringing. He is sensitive and perceptive; he was the only one who thought it was rude to party when Chloé told everyone she was 'leaving Paris'. He gets his feelings hurt when people like his father disappoints him, however he is used to it and is able to manage these feelings to avoid attracting akumas, a notable feat since he unknowingly lived in the same house as his enemy. When in public, he usually tries to downplay his feelings on it, like his relationship with his father. He has an easier time letting his feelings show to those whom he is close to. However, Adrien will act on impulse if emotional enough, like lying to Théo Barbot out of jealousy about his relationship with Ladybug and sneaking out into the night while unhappy on Christmas, missing his mother, though the latter was due to his father's distant and cold attitude. He realizes that his father is overprotective, causing him to occasionally act rebelliously, like going places with his friends or alone without informing his family and taking things that don't belong to him, though the former case was caused by his father's over-protection.
While his love is what makes Adrien stronger, his desire to be loved makes him vulnerable whenever disappointed by those he cares for, as seen when Ladybug didn't show up for their date in "Glaciator", (despite her telling him otherwise) or his father on numerous occasions. Family-related issues also strike him emotionally, even in the simple (though repeated) situation when his father doesn't show up to spend dinner with him due to his loneliness, or when Mayura's deception leads him into trouble; this means that he follows his heart at the most inconvenient times due to his desire for love and companionship. This continues to the point where he admits as Cat Noir that his love impulses are hard to control[77] due to his father showing him a lack of love and his own inability to share it due to his lack of contact with others. Even moreso, making him sad and angry when he finally has the love he desires just to have it be taken from him as seen in "Oblivio" and "Cat Blanc". This reached a critical point in "Jubilation", when the power of Gift forced him to live his greatest desire about having Ladybug's love, her hand in marriage and a family with her. Only to be tearfully told the truth by her that it wasn't real and upon waking up, he reacted violently even to the point of almost using his Cataclysm on an akumatized villain, though he did snap out of it before doing something he would've regretted upon hearing Ladybug shout.
This emotional instability, combined with lack of social interactions, goes to the point where he was so desperate for love that he stepped on boundary lines such as relentlessly and romantically chasing after Ladybug despite knowing she was after someone else or expressed any happiness or joy that she was. However, unlike how Felix was in his debut episode, Cat Noir did not try to force himself on Ladybug in any way and always backed off when she said no, though his flirting (whether real or as a joke), combined with Ladybug's stress as the Guardian, caused her to sternly reprimand him and even to aggressively throw him in a trash bin while fighting Glaciator.[77] But through love he learned what it means to have patience, slow down, and to let someone go but can still be close to them such as in "Passion", "Elation", and "Perfection". His emotional maturity reached a critical point of growth following "Migration" and "Derision", where he took his time in learning about Marinette especially when it came to her love trauma during their relationship.
Adrien understands that all life is valuable, so he usually thinks reasonably and will express distress and frustration when someone is difficult or something is going wrong, especially in Plagg's case, and actively avoids using his Cataclysm on a living being. However, according to Gabriel, he is very similar to his mother, describing them as "dramatic" and "headstrong when it comes to other people's safety". Furthermore, in "Miraculous Paris", he refused to use the ultimate power at the cost of another family ending up like his, broken. However, his heroic tendencies can lead to recklessness with or without the mask, insisting on fighting Riposte with a sprained ankle in order to protect his crime-fighting partner. And again to a more dangerous extent when his ribs were broken as a result of his Cataclysm being used against him, though he knew he needed to help Ladybug, something she acknowledged since she didn't bench him after finding about his condition and even sent him to deliver the Bee Miraculous to Queen Bee. On the verge of dying, he insisted on continuing to fight, showing his will and determination to help even if restrained.[78] On certain occasions, Adrien (as Cat Noir) can be hasty sometimes, evidently when rushing to face certain akumatized villains without a plan. Due to this rashness, he often needs to be restrained or stopped by Ladybug or at one point Master Fu. This recklessness is exacerbated by his anger and fear of losing those dear to him or becoming useless to them, which blinds him from the consequences of his actions. This caused Cat Noir to harshly renounce his Miraculous in "Kuro Neko", not realizing that Ladybug shouted at him not to waste her time because she was stressed as the Guardian and that they should talk again after they both calmed down; furthermore, he left his Miraculous abandoned on a roof, which had a chance of being stolen, especially if Shadow Moth lurked around like he did in "Sentibubbler".
At times, Adrien can be persistent and curious about his Miraculous powers[79] or when wanting to figure something out, as seen when he continuously bribed Plagg with cheese until he spilled the truth about what Ladybug was hiding. This trait is highly apparent in his romantic pursuit of her, to the point where both Marinette (referring to Cat Noir) and Kagami believe that he is stubborn. However, like Alya Césaire, he places extreme values on the mutual trust he has with Ladybug, respecting her decision to keep her identity secret and eventually her secrets with the guardian and when Ladybug became one. To where he held a great fear of losing it and disappointing Ladybug and he tried to hide the truth from her, evident in "Miraculous New York". According to Ladybug, Cat Noir does annoy her a lot, but he has never lied to her. Per her wishes, he is secretive to others about his personal life, such as his love towards her, partially telling his true feelings to her aforementioned friends. However, it is this inability to talk openly about his crush that partially caused his excessive romantic pursuit of her; while Marinette had friends like Alya and the others to stop her from executing a terrible plan to get his attention or simply overthinking, Adrien's friends couldn't know about his crush on Ladybug and its depth so they couldn't help temperate his impulses.
Cat Noir taunts the mummies while on a lamppost.
Adrien is also unaware that his mother was in a pod in a comatose state in the Crypt under his house due to the Peacock Miraculous, and remained so of this as well as his father's identity as Monarch per his wishes. Nevertheless, he knows that his mother is dead, which is why he told his father it was fine with him wanting to pursue a romantic relationship with Nathalie, showing that he has more fortitude than his father; Adrien, despite being in the dark, accepted her passing and it didn't lead him down a dark path like his father or counterpart. Adrien knew that he would have his father, Nathalie, and some friends to have all the love he needs to be happy; while he did confess of being tempted to use the wish to reunite with his mother, he knew he would need to sacrifice another person and that the price was too high[80]; furthermore, when proposing to use the wish to get rid of Monarch and all the bad things in the world, upon Ladybug's explanation that the wish would simply cause these calamities in another way to maintain balance, he quickly accepted the fact and immediately gave up.[81] He has a high tolerance for pain and higher discipline which makes him a true warrior, he understands that he's not perfect, life isn't perfect, bad things happen to everyone, and with help from loved ones, he can grow to be happy from those experiences: he knows that just because life isn't what one wants it to be, that doesn't mean you should put it on others, instead, you have to accept it and grow.
Similar to Chloé, it's also understandable as to why Adrien hates secrets because of his father and possibly mother as he had to live his whole life as one big secret as he was homeschooled meaning he was unable to interact with anyone else beside her. This extends to the point to where no one else knew the real him, only the image his father made up of him and as a model. Not only that, but because of his parents' mistake he felt excluded from them as well even mentioning himself that he took up modeling just to get close to his father. When he dons the mask of Cat Noir, Adrien is free to express his inner self, but is bound by his secret identity and ends up becoming a liar himself as seen in "Lies". However, his understanding is bit more refined than Chloé; he accepts the secrets of his father and Ladybug and trusts that they had good intentions. He also has a strong desire to be included to the point of being impatient as it takes time for people to trust others, though he was right that Ladybug should've trusted him more after she became Guardian. During the alternative timeline in "Ephemeral", after Adrien revealed his secret identity to Ladybug, both side traits merged, with him showing traits of one when he is the other, as he no longer needed to hide who he really is from her, which caused an emotional balance. As compared to despite achieving emotional balance in "Cat Blanc" and "Revolution", Adrien practically learned the hard way why secrets are kept especially when comes to those who use it against you.
Adrien running with Sublime.
Due to his father planning every detail of his life, Adrien was unsure of what to do about the future; more so about who he truly is, at first starting to accept Cat Noir as his true self but as time went on he wasn't sure. In "Kuro Neko", believing if he reinvented himself as Cat Walker things would change. But seeing how much Ladybug cared for his old alter-ego and after the titular sentimonster's defeat, with help from Plagg he started to accept that he is both Adrien the good and obedient son and Cat Noir the daring and adventurous hero of Paris. However because of his father's death Adrien had been forced to make a lot of big decisions with his life which have left him aimless and confused. In "Climatiqueen", he revealed to Marinette that through all the activities his father forced him to do; not one had sparked his interest, and although Marinette tried to help him by doing a few activities with him, the only activity that he truly loved was his heroism as Cat Noir. By the episode's end he meets Sublime and she encourages him to take up running as a hobby which is showcased in "Sublimation".
It could also be that he loved his heroism as Cat Noir so much is because maybe it was the only thing that he could have without his father's influence without knowing that he got it indirectly because of his dad.
Unknowingly from his father, Adrien learned what happens when one gives into their own desires through desperation or when not thinking things through as he let his cousin play on his desire for freedom but it led to the opposite of what he wanted as he got put deeper inside his cage along with everyone else. After their defeat, Adrien learns that his friends were right as he should've fought for what he wanted and doing so he found it wasn't that hard. However, neither him nor his friends knew that he was a sentimonster being controlled by Gabriel, so standing up to his father was not as simple as it seemed. In "Revolution" and "Representation", he learned another harsh lesson: when fighting for what you want or who you love, you shouldn't quit nor reject help so easily but instead seek help no matter how much it hurts, especially when telling a painful truth, such as by not telling his friends or Ladybug about his father's actions of sending him to London when either found out there was nothing they could do. While he did tell Marinette, which allowed her to catch up to him and share a kiss, there was nothing they could do to stop him from leaving. Not only that, when told the sad truth about his father, Adrien was filled with guilt believing if he had said something then he could've been there to help those who needed him; however, no one but Plagg, Tikki and Ladybug knew that had Adrien been there, things would have taken a turn for the worse similar to "Cat Blanc" and "Ephemeral"; ultimately, him not telling he was sent to London prevented a catastrophe.
As Cat Noir, his personality is an overall combination of both himself and his alter ego. He's the perfect son who's extremely successful at everything he does but he's also Cat Noir who just wants to enjoy life and have fun as Plagg said in "Kuro Neko". Adrien has the freedom to act however he desires outside of his normal life, letting his wilder side come out.[82] More optimistic and open, he says whatever comes to his mind yet is not one to insult or downgrade others, except for akumatized villains in a joking manner and has a habit of cracking cat-related jokes and puns in general. As he said in "Plagg", being Cat Noir is the only time Adrien can be himself. Much of his exaggerated personality, especially his flirtatious behavior with Ladybug, stems from entertainment such as anime, television, and movies due to his lack of experience with people his age beyond Chloé.[82] Plagg considers him to be the best "Cat Noir". It is rare for Cat Noir to reveal his vulnerable side, but it does come through at times. Examples of this are when he quietly comments that not all parents are loving, tries in vain to tell Ladybug about his love for her before their transformations wore off, and opens up to Marinette about his struggles in the love department.
In a few instances, he is shown to be arrogant, like when he jokingly mocked some akumatized villains for their appearances with puns and jokes.
Since he became Cat Noir, like Marinette, Adrien has grown in confidence and developed characteristically. This is seen when he lashed out at his father in "Collusion" and courageously asked Nathalie if he could bring his friends with him to the wax museum. In "Multiplication", when Su-Han confronted him and Ladybug about losing the Miraculous, he stood up to the Grandmaster about their progress and his lack of help.
In his attempts to get Ladybug's attention, as well as interacting with certain other people, he acts cocky and brags, liking to boast about himself in a comedic way;[83] in "Cat Noir as seen by Marinette", he was described by Ladybug in the same way. His perspective of people slowly begins to change at first through his fights as Cat Noir; Adrien naively believed that people are only dangerous when akumatized, but in "Oni-Chan" through Lila, he learned that people could become dangerous even without superpowers. Horrified that her hatred of Ladybug is so deep, she was willing to leave the heroine and, by extension, everyone else in great danger just to have her revenge.
However, Cat Noir occasionally shows insecurity when comparing his abilities to Ladybug or their new partners but it's also when he is at his strongest and his warrior side comes out.[84] He displayed his biggest sense of insecurity when he failed to save those he cares about, leading to the fear of losing them, as seen in "Desperada", when his romantic feelings towards Ladybug caused him to take the Snake Miraculous despite knowing she also needed him as Cat Noir. Another time he feels insecure is when in the shadows of others, as seen at a critical point in "Kuro Neko" and "Strikeback". Both times he was left out by Ladybug because since she became guardian she has more responsibilities and thinks Cat Noir won't take them seriously or is afraid of him getting akumatized; as such, he felt like he meant nothing to her so much so that he was willing to give up on being Cat Noir. As Aspik, he tried for months before coming to the realization that he wasn't the right choice. These traits also often spark his instincts to protect Ladybug before himself, sacrificing himself numerous times always with a confidence she'll find a way when he can't. Despite Ladybug usually calling him "crazy reckless", his instincts always prove him right. In "Furious Fu", realizing that if Ladybug had given up the Miracle Box and her memories would result in her forgetting about him and finding the memories they share so precious, refusing to lose her and knowing their duty is too important to pass onto someone else, Cat Noir bravely defied Su-Han. To where he impulsively attacked Scarabella with his Cataclysm fearing that something happened to Ladybug in "Hack-San", though despite his sound hostile reasons since the duo were tricked by lookalikes and false heroes before. During the "New York special", he grew aware of the destructive capabilities of the Cat Miraculous as he accidentally struck Uncanny Valley, knowing that if she weren't an android, the outcome would've been different, in contrast to Stoneheart in "Origins". Because of this for a time Adrien felt unworthy of his powers and renounced them, showing his growing discipline, restraint, and caring side. This happened again in "Destruction" and "Miraculous Paris" as the Cataclysm was used on people. Although, they forced Cat Noir to do so, even though he didn't want to. But this made Adrien feel guilty and disappointed in himself, so much so that it grew as a great fear as seen in "Representation".
However, like Ladybug, he too is aware of Hawk Moth's increasing sneaky nature and because of his archenemy's behavior Cat Noir slowly accepts that they can't treat everything with "kid gloves" as he attempted to use his powers on their enemies on multiple occasions but as a last resort when there is nothing else to try. He still shows his self-control when using his Cataclysm on someone shown in "Destruction" doing it only as a means of intimidation. Even refusing to use it on his archenemy knowing that he didn't want to hurt Monarch despite all the pain he caused. Knowing he was still a person underneath but was shocked and horrified when Monarch forced him to do it. Showing the greatest discipline of all in "Conformation", where Adrien relinquished his ring understanding that the emotional state he was in was no good to anyone.
Cat Noir is shocked and concerned by Hawk Moth’s message.
Despite all these traits, Adrien's change to his superhero status and mistakes don't diminish his empathy and concern for others, among his other personality traits, such as his reasonable character and reckless behavior. He usually tries to persuade the supervillains to calm down and stop their rampage before fighting them when able to do so. While more prone to goofing off, Cat Noir gets serious when it is a lethal situation. He understands that it takes more than just superpowers to be a hero or useful, using his wits, empathy, and wisdom to help Ladybug out of a tight spot even without them. Even understanding that it's a hero's duty to rescue everyone especially those that cause trouble holding onto hope by setting an example for them that it will help others change seen in "Félix". Underneath his hero exterior, Cat Noir never forgets that he and Ladybug are still human with their own problems. He also knows how to cheer up his partner during their hardest times and encourages her to try to fight again. Deeply loyal and determined to help others and save the day, he really cherishes being uninhibited by his civilian life as a superhero. Due to his lifestyle and yet unlike his father, he isn't tempted by power because he understands depending on how a person uses it won't get them what they need the most.
Even though Adrien cherishes his freedom, he knows it shouldn't be done carelessly, realizing this is in "Risk" and "Strikeback", as he let Félix unintentionally play on his desire to be included by Ladybug but he felt guilty on how he got it as he believed that the other's didn't deserve to be depowered because of him and yet was happy to know that even without their powers. Adrien still had their support and he knew that it was time to get serious because of it, that the only way to get freedom for Paris is to become stronger together and work as equals. He understood this as said in "Emotion", that he couldn't enjoy it without those he loved. Although he does desire his freedom, he wishes for it to be gained on his own terms as he didn't approve of his cousin's method. And when Félix couldn't bring Marinette back, he felt very angry and used it to help Félix see the error of his ways, however Adrien could've transformed into Cat Noir to deal with him but used reason out of his anger instead, showing discipline, and teaching him that freedom isn't about denial or hate, but about equality and acceptance.
Cat Noir happily welcomes Rena Rouge into the team.
Cat Noir is welcoming and friendly when it comes to accepting new additions to the team, having open arms for Lila in "Volpina" and Rena Rouge in "Sapotis". He is also open to accepting help from others like Alix and Nathaniel during battles, as shown during the time he was reversed from "puss to wuss", becoming a complete coward, contrasting to his brave and confident nature. Like Ladybug, he is good at providing advice to others when they need it. [85] As Cat Noir, Adrien has the people's loyalty, respect, trust, and help when he needs it.[86]
Through spending time with his other allies, Cat Noir, like Ladybug, also values their support and help. Thanks to his time as his alter ego and daringly wanting to see the outside world, Adrien got to experience something his father may have forgotten: The power of love and acceptance towards others. Starting to feel that Ladybug and the team are like his second family.[87] As well as valuing the support, companionship, and help of his friends. Due to Shadow Moth's power and desire ever growing like her, Cat Noir is thankful for the help of their old and new allies but due to them constantly showing up he felt left out and started to believe that there would be a day when Ladybug wouldn't need him. This suggests he has little sense of his own worth due to his home life. By "Kuro Neko", his feelings of being left out by Ladybug and the others then make him so depressed that Adrien didn't bother going on missions, temporarily giving up his ring and would not do anything else. But seeing how Ladybug felt about his old hero alter ego he showed remorse for his earlier behavior understanding that he was just as valuable as the other team members and that unlike Chloé as well as his father, Adrien can't use force, intimidation, nor his status to make others give him what he wants. Understanding what it truly meant in "Multiplication" and "Elation", as he used his alterego just so he could be with the girl he loved and to the point of where he nearly revealed his identity to her in "Representation" and realized this in "Conformation".
Cat Noir is also very versatile, while Ladybug was away in "Hack-San", he takes over as leader of the team taking after the heroine's cautiousness and seriousness acting like a stern older brother and mentor as he did with Scarabella. After Ladybug was struck by Psycomedian becoming very angry he took after her calm and coolness aware in her state that she was reckless and kept her close. It was also seen in "Miraculous Paris", he wasn't just able to outsmart Claw Noir in battle, he was able to convince him to change by telling him how to accept the things you already have not the things you want.
As Mister Bug, Adrien retained most of his personality as Cat Noir, like his hastiness and his confidence in his abilities. However, according to Lady Noire, he lost some of his sense of humor, getting a taste of Ladybug's careful side and creative thinking.
As Aspik, Adrien retained more of his personality as a civilian rather than as Cat Noir. However, despite still being trustworthy and faithful, he was unfocused as his crush on Ladybug kept him from doing a good job with fighting Desperada. Desperate to impress her as Adrien, he disregarded the villain's movements and kept using his power to go back in time to try to prevent Ladybug from being captured. Eventually, he came to the conclusion he could not be of any help to her as Aspik and returned the Snake Miraculous to Ladybug, understanding that what he was doing brought more harm than good.
As Snake Noir and remembering his time as Aspik, Adrien greatly improved using the power of Second Chance, as he shook off his desire to impress Ladybug. Following Viperion's example, he turned it into calmness, focus, and determination to save his friends.
As Cat Walker, Adrien acted as he normally does in his civilian form, being respectful, gallant and soft-spoken at the same time. Unlike Cat Noir, he did not fool around and focused on the job at hand. Despite a new superhero identity, he still loved Ladybug, showing it more subtly. All that reflected the image of perfection his father wants him to be. In fact, Cat Walker acted so much like his civilian self that even Ladybug couldn't act like herself, similar to how when she is around Adrien, even interfering with her ability to use her Lucky Charm. Through this new persona he learned not to take exclusions so hard as Ladybug told him he is irreplaceable.
As Rabbit Noir, he retained most of his personality as Cat Noir, but in more of a responsible manner also remembering his time as Snake Noir where he managed to show a great improvement over his uses with the time powers.
Cat Blanc manipulates Ladybug.
As Cat Blanc, he retained most of his personality as Cat Noir, but in more of a twisted manner. He used his flirtatious behavior as a facade to get close to his opponents to attack them. His love for Ladybug had become more obsessive and, while still showing to care for her, he still tried to get her Miraculous, even if that meant destroying her. His temper became even more intense as he tried to destroy the whole galaxy, if not more, in anger for Ladybug not giving him her Miraculous. He also started to resemble his father in the sense that he let his emotions get the better of him.
As Ephemeral, he was shown to be very lethargic, as he was forced by his father, the one who akumatized him, to betray the girl he loves to get her Miraculous. Just like his power was to accelerate time, he wished nothing but that time passes quickly, not only because he wanted his mother to return, but also because he wanted Marinette's suffering to end. Despite being completely submissive to his father, Ephemeral was shown to still care for Marinette, as he was shown to react to her when she called for his help as Shadow Noir took her Miraculous.
As Celesticat, unlike his other akumatized forms, he maintained his same personality as Cat Noir because he is a kamikotized form. He was also still willing to help his partner, Ladybug, and Betterfly (a Miraculous wielder he barely knew) escape Shadybug and Claw Noir for being trapped in an invulnerable moment.
Abilities[]
As a Civilian[]
As a civilian, studious and formerly home-schooled, Adrien is the top student in his class, with his lowest grade being an A- in Math, he is especially good at physics. This was seen in "Reunion" when Adrien figured out the Book of Truth's question. Having many extra lessons, Adrien can speak fluent Chinese and Japanese and can even understand Morse code. He is also very skilled at playing the piano and enjoys sharing musical joy with others.
Adrien is able to fight on equal grounds with his fencing teacher and fend off most of his students effortlessly, with the exception of Kagami, showing great reflexes and skill for offensive or defensive movements. Other than fencing, Adrien does Karate and Kung Fu, which enables him to fight in hand-to-hand combat and briefly fight his akuma-controlled bodyguard. Furthermore, Adrien takes basketball lessons.[88]
He took an interest in video games as well, being able to beat Max Kanté in Ultimate Mecha Strike III and achieve one of the top scores in the entire school (despite being surpassed by Marinette later). The skill came in handy when it was revealed that in "Zombizou" that Adrien can drive because of his experience playing "Extreme Racing 3", and in "Glaciator 2", his skills had improved. In Félix and Multiplication it was also implied that Adrien is good at strategy games like Rummy and Chess. It is shown in "Mr. Pigeon" that he can whistle.
Like Marinette, to a possibly lesser extent, Adrien has great stamina and endurance as he was able to outrun a fan mob and was able to handle both the physical and mental strain of wielding two Miraculous together without struggle. In Season 6, he takes interest in running.
Though often looked down on compared to Ladybug and being more simple, straightforward-minded, Adrien is very intelligent, talented, and adaptable. He is able to look for loopholes in his father's rules, which his friends considered "sneaky". He is also able to figure out solutions to problems when Ladybug is M.I.A or affected by a supervillain. In "Psycomedian" when Ladybug was affected by Psycomedian's power, Cat Noir had to figure out how to use the Lucky Charm (albeit it was straightforward) on his own and defeat the villain, while Ladybug wasn't in her right mind. This was also seen in "Miraculous Paris" as Cat Noir tricked and surprised Claw Noir multiple times before Claw Noir stole the Cat Miraculous from him. He also tricked Ladybug (and indirectly the suspicious Hawk Moth) into believing he wasn't Adrien in "Gorizilla".
Though restless and reckless, Cat Noir is observant, committed, wise, compassionate, and alert noticing where the akumas are hidden several times and finding ways to save/protect his Miraculous or another holder's even when captured or in a tight spot. In "Copycat", he learned who the fake Cat Noir was, where he may be, and suggested a way to defeat him. Or when he was able to track Frozer down and observe his movements so he could be ready(as seen in the respective episode). This was again seen in "Truth", when Cat Noir gave Ladybug a chance to use her lucky charm without revealing any secrets due to the akumatized villain's power. He is also very wise and compassionate in "Miracle Queen" or "Strikeback", he gave Ladybug advice and encouragement to keep fighting and she would always solve the problem. Or when he was able to convince Lila into making up a lie to bring Marinette back to school in "Ladybug". He further demonstrated his skills in his use with the Snake Miraculous as Snake Noir.
From his lessons with Master Fu, Adrien has received the same knowledge about the history of the kwamis and the Miraculouses as Marinette, though likely to a lesser extent, as he wasn't prepared to become a guardian. This was seen in "Passion" as Adrien figured out how to defeat Safari without risking his identity or Ladybug's and when he thought about using the wish to put an end to Monarch. He also demonstrated that skill with the Rabbit Miraculous as Rabbit Noir.
To a lesser extent compared to Marinette, Adrien does have an artistic side, as he was able to create a lucky charm for Marinette in "Befana". Another example was in "Protection" as he secretly made a picnic for him and Marinette to date and he decorated it beautifully. And in "Glaciator", he adorned a roof so he could tell Ladybug how he felt.
As Cat Noir[]
Cat Noir has enhanced physical skills such as superhuman speed, agility, and near-invulnerability.[89] These abilities allow him to react to and evade light-based attacks, as well as jump and leap several times his height and length. Like a cat, Cat Noir has enhanced senses such as hearing, smell, night vision, and super stealth,[90] which he sometimes uses to find opponents. Also, like a cat, he can use his claws to climb up surfaces or use them to cut through things.
He is fast enough to outrun a pair of panthers, being capable of running at least between 35-50 mph. His increased strength allows him to do things such as being able to over shoulder throw his own bodyguard into an elevator, use his staff as a lever to knock over a city bus, roundhouse kick, punch and stomp vending machines and kitchen appliances with just one strike. His increased stamina, durability, and endurance allow him to survive being smashed into a series of cars, a face-plant into a traffic pole, falling several stories, being flung by Gigantitan, and take a crash landing through André's ice cream stand without being dazed or injured. He has even survived attacks from Ikari Gozen and Bakerix, both of whom are akumatized villains who are strong enough to lift and throw around entire city buses. He also has good hand-to-hand combat skills when needed. Even out of "Aqua Mode", Cat Noir is a good swimmer. He can even handle temperatures as severe as absolute 0.
Cat Noir uses his staff efficiently, wielding it as a sword, throwing it with great precision, and having it be deflected back to him. He is able to spin it at high speeds to form a shield or take advantage of its duplication and length-changing features. To travel long distances, he uses his staff and its variety in length to vault over obstacles. In and out of "Aqua Mode", he can also use his staff as a breathing apparatus for those who can't breathe underwater.
His special power, Cataclysm, allows him to negatively affect and essentially destroy anything that he touches with his ring hand. While it is usually used for object destruction, it can be used for a variety of different effects, for example, causing a bus's controls to go haywire and creating a platform in a structure. However, like other superheroes, using Cataclysm drains his Miraculous power, causing him to revert back to Adrien five minutes afterward. But, after the events of "Revolution", that is not the case anymore, and he can use as many Cataclysms as he wants without transforming back.
In "Revelator", Cat Noir is able to upgrade his Cataclysm, transforming it into a destructive variant of Miraculous Ladybug. Through this technique, he can destroy that what was "created" by the Akumatized villain (that is any causal effect originated from the villain/crisis), like secrets revealed through their powers to other people. After Rena Rouge uncovered Ladybug's secret about Monarch's real identity, Cat Noir's Miraculous Cat Noir was able to destroy that revelation from her, causing her to forget it completely.
As Aqua Noir[]
Aqua Noir, in addition to his original powers, has enhanced swimming capabilities due to the fins on his feet as well as the ability to breathe and speak underwater.
As Ice Cat[]
Ice Cat, in addition to his original powers, has enhanced skating capabilities as well as being able to handle extremely low temperatures.
As Astrocat[]
Astrocat, in addition to his original powers, has the ability to survive at high altitudes and in space as well as the ability move freely and quickly while up in the air due to his jetpack.
As Mister Bug[]
Mister Bug calling upon his superpower, Lucky Charm.
He had the same abilities as Ladybug: enhanced skills like speed, agility, and strength, and near invulnerability to physical damage.
Like Ladybug, Mister Bug could wield his yo-yo remarkably well, like using it as a grappling hook, a rope to restrain others, a projectile, and a shield if he spins it fast enough. After an evil akuma was released from its corrupted object, he could open his yo-yo, throw it to grab it, and remove the energy it was charged with, releasing it as a normal butterfly.
Along with his special power, Lucky Charm creates an object that helps him to achieve his objective, and it often was to stop a villain. Though he was usually confused at first, his cleverness helped enable him to perceive how the object could be used to help him achieve his goal. However, the Lucky Charm drained his power and caused him to revert back to Adrien shortly afterward, so he had to use it wisely. Once the villain was dealt with, Mister Bug could throw his Lucky Charm object into the air and use the Miraculous Mister Bug, which would make it revert back to energy and fix all of the damage done since the villain appeared.
As Aspik[]
Aspik calling upon his superpower, Second Chance.
Like Viperion, Aspik had much more enhanced skills, such as speed, agility, and strength, and he was almost invulnerable to physical damage. Like a snake, he also had enhanced senses like hearing and smell as well as infrared vision.
His special power, Second Chance, allowed him to reverse time and change the outcome of an event, in which the power is activated by sliding his finger on his Miraculous.
As Snake Noir[]
Snake Noir had the powers of both Cataclysm and Second Chance, which he used to attack and read his opponents' movements in battle, respectively.
As Rabbit Noir[]
Rabbit Noir had the power of both Cataclysm and the ability to travel through time by using Burrow.
As Cat Blanc[]
Cat Blanc uses Mega Cataclysm.
As Cat Blanc, he possessed the power of infinite destruction. He could use a super-enhanced version of the Cataclysm, known as the Mega Cataclysm. He could also release his destructive power at long range, as a blast, or as a ray. He was capable of unleashing destructive energy that could potentially destroy whole galaxies in a single strike, unlike Cat Noir, who could only destroy one thing at a time. He could use his power an infinite number of times without his transformation dropping or his power source exhausting.
As Ephemeral[]
Ephemeral took the powers of Ladybug.
As Ephemeral, he had the power to accelerate time for another person. He did this by touching someone, causing an orb of lilac energy to get pulled out of them, and then absorbing it, which caused the arrows on his body to flicker as time started to accelerate. When this power was used on a Miraculous holder, after they have used their superpower, their detransformation happened much sooner, going from five minutes to a few seconds.
As Celesticat[]
As Celesticat, he had the power of flight and could glow brightly to disrupt an opponent's sight.
Family[]
Tree
= Male
= Female
= Gender Unknown
Notes[]
- The three deceased members of the family all died due to the Miraculouses and their powers: Émilie and Colt were victims of the damaged Peacock Miraculous after using it to conceive their sons, while Gabriel sacrificed himself by making a wish to save Nathalie. Without the wish, he would have died from Cat Noir's Cataclysm anyway.

Etymology[]
- The name Adrien comes from the Roman cognomen "Hadrianus", which means "from Hadria". In the days of the Roman Empire, Hadria was a town in northern Italy and the namesake of the Adriatic Sea. The Adriatic Sea is known for the dark-colored sand on its beaches, and for this reason, the name is also commonly translated as "dark one".
- This might reference the dark coloring of Adrien's suit as Cat Noir.
- His last name Agreste means "rural" in French. It is also the French name for the grayling butterfly. Hence, his full name may be taken as meaning "dark butterfly".
- The name "Chat Noir" is French for "Black Cat". Some sources have called him "Black Cat" instead of Chat Noir or Cat Noir.[91]
- The reason for that change is that the partners at Disney thought that calling him "Chat Noir" might be confusing for young children, while translating it to "Black Cat" isn't very original.[92]
- In many of the dubs (including the Korean, Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Arabic, Turkish, Hebrew, Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, Vietnamese, and Mongolian dubs) Adrien's superhero name is "Black Cat".
- In the Russian and Ukrainian dubs, Adrien's superhero name is "Super Cat".
- In the European Portuguese version, Adrien's superhero name is "Gato Noir", which, like "Cat Noir", is a mix of Portuguese and French, as "Gato" means "Cat" in Portuguese.
- The name Cat Blanc is French for "White Cat" which refers to how in "Cat Blanc", where he was left in an empty blank world after his powers went wild during his akumatization.
- Aspik's name is a version of aspic, the French word for "asp", an archaic name for venomous snakes that inhabited the Nile region that is believed to refer to the Egyptian cobra.
- Snake Noir's name translates to "Black Snake" which refers to a species of snake that lives in North America.
- The name Cat Walker comes from 'catwalk', a term used for the motions and poses done by models on the runway during a fashion show. That's because Adrien as Cat Walker uses the same perfect, gentlemanly golden child persona as in his civilian life.
- In the French dub, his name is instead Patte de Velours (Velvet Paw), which is a slang term for a declawed cat. This is likely meant to reference that he is "declawing" his personality to be a more dependable partner by putting on the persona he uses in his civilian form rather than the Cat Noir persona he feels more comfortable using. This could also double as a reference to the phrase "faire patte de velours", meaning to disguise one's true feelings under a kind attitude.
- "Rabbit Noir" means "Black Rabbit" in French. In the terms of symbolism, the black rabbit means many things, including insecurities, fear of intimacy, lies, or weakening or disappointing relationships – such as the ones Adrien has with family and friends shown continuously throughout the series, especially in the fifth season.
Development[]
- The earliest known appearance of Cat Noir was on the fake cover of issue #12 of The Mini Menace Ladybug.
Félix, the previous version of Cat Noir, with Marinette in the Ladybug PV.
- Cat Noir's civilian self was originally a character called Félix.
- Fans originally called him this, after a famous cartoon cat. For some time, this name appeared on the original French version of Zagtoon's official website,[93] but later disappeared with newer, equally reliable sources calling him "Adrien".
- His design included more formal clothing with black and gray colors, desaturated green eyes, and a tidier hairstyle. As Cat Noir, Félix's hair was much longer in a shaggy bob style and he wore higher boots.
- Félix-Cat Noir didn't have a staff for a weapon.
- His personality differed from current Adrien's – Félix was less social, not openly friendly, and unkind to Marinette.
- Adrien was created around 2012.[94]
- As opposed to the show's current conceptualization of the how Miraculouses work, when PV Félix was Cat Noir, his ring could not come off unless he got a kiss from Ladybug. In addition, while wearing the ring, Félix was cursed to have bad luck.[95]
- Because Félix was Cat Noir in the Ladybug PV, Adrien was never seen in 2D form until the Miraculous: Tales from Paris webisodes. He will be seen again in 2D in the Miraculous Ladybug OVA, as Adrien is confirmed to still be Cat Noir instead of Félix.[96]
- In the "Art of the Miraculous", Cat Noir's powers included Black Storm and Black Hole.
- Adrien was originally supposed to be disabled, and use a crutch. However, the producers and the broadcasters didn't trust themselves to write him well, so the idea was scrapped, and the crutch later became Cat Noir's staff.[97]

- It's implied in "Feast" that Master Fu gave Adrien the Cat Miraculous so that the boy could change his fate.
- Mister Bug, Aspik and Snake Noir were first revealed in concept art shown at the 2018 Comic Con Experience panel on December 6, 2018.[72]
- In the earliest episodes of the series, the background of Cat Noir's transformation is gray. It's later changed to green and remains that way for the rest of the show.
Miscellaneous[]
- Jokingly, Thomas Astruc said that Adrien's middle name is "Perfection".[103] and as well as once joked that Cat Noir's suit is made of "boyfriend material".[104]
- One of Adrien's names, Émile, is reminiscent of his late mother, Émilie Agreste, and maternal grandfather, Emil Graham de Vanily.
- Cat Noir has displayed many feline behaviors throughout the series – caressing his tail after it being pulled, responding positively to his chin being scratched, cleaning himself by licking water off after getting wet, purring, growling at villains, running on all fours during battles, and so on.
- Cat Noir often comes to the Grand Paris hotel when he's feeling down, as shown in "Lies".
- Cat Blanc made a brief reappearance in "Sentibubbler" as one of the people terrorizing Marinette in her nightmare.
- The episode "Destruction" reveals that Cat Noir carried a silly message written on a piece of paper inside his bell for a long time as part of a plan Ladybug made in case Monarch discovered where she lives.
- Before this information was confirmed in "Representation", there've been hints throughout the show suggesting that Adrien is a sentimonster:
- Adrien's appearance has all of his mother's genetic traits, such as the colors of his skin, eyes and hair, but he doesn't have any genetic traits of Gabriel.
- He is always very obedient towards his father, even in small situations.
- In "Ladybug & Cat Noir", Gabriel tells his son that he "is not like anyone else" after Adrien complains about not being allowed to go to school and make friends.
- In "Simon Says", Gabriel states that Adrien is "the image of perfection" while showing a frame with his picture to Ladybug.
- In "Ladybug", when Ladybug gave the titular sentimonster freedom, Cat Noir made an awkward shocked face.
- Also, in the episode's end card, an amok was placed near Adrien.
- In multiple episodes of season 4 (such as "Mega Leech" and "Ephemeral"), Adrien does as he is told by his father after the man rubs his wedding ring, just like how sentimonters can be controlled using their amokized objects.
- The commercial for Adrien the Fragrance includes feathers around his pose.
- In "Félix" and "Risk", Félix criticized Adrien for always doing what his father told him to, and not being free enough.
- In "Gabriel Agreste", when Félix gave one of the twin rings' copy to his uncle, Gabriel burst into anger claiming that he knows every and each scratch from Émilie's ring, finding out that it was actually a fake one.
- When Gabriel entrusted one of the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings to Nathalie in "Risk", he said that he was entrusting his son along with it.
- In "Wishmaker", Adrien/Cat Noir's childhood dream, exposed by the titular villain, is very simple, unlike those of the villain's other victims.
- In "Emotion", when Argos created his new free world after making everyone disappear, Adrien was one of the only three remaining people in Paris.
- In "Representation", when Adrien escaped from London to see Marinette in Paris, Gabriel retrieved the ring from Nathalie, saying that he would only obey him.
- Not counting his creators, Gabriel and Émilie, only six living people know Adrien is a human-sentimonster: Marinette, Amélie, Félix, Nathalie, Kagami and Alix, and nine characters in general, adding Duusu, Nooroo and Tikki.
- The number rises to ten if Colt Fathom, who passed away, is included.
- Marinette and Tikki found out in "Representation" through Kagami and Félix's play.
- Alix found out as Bunnyx through the Burrow.
- Colt and Amélie found out after Gabriel told Colt they used the Peacock Miraculous to create Adrien.
- Félix found out after his father's death.
- Kagami was told this by Félix.
- Duusu, having the power to manifest sentibeings, would be aware that both Adrien and Félix are human sentimonsters.
- It is unknown how Nooroo found out, though it is likely Gabriel/Hawk Moth or Duusu told him.
- In "Syren", it is revealed that Adrien owns Ladybug and Cat Noir figurines and that he always wanted a pet goldfish.
- In "Penalteam", Adrien doesn't know how to play soccer, even though he shouted "GOOOAL" in "Furious Fu" and even owns a foosball table.
- In "Werepapas", it's revealed that Adrien never knew that his father changed his last name from "Grassette" to "Agreste" due to Gabriel never mentioning it to him.

- ↑ In "The Bubbler", it's Adrien's birthday. Later, in "Gorizilla", Gabriel refers to his son as "a 14-year-old boy". According to multiple characters in "Félix", a year has passed from Émilie's "disappearance", and since Émilie "disappeared" before "Origins", less than a year would have passed since his last birthday. This is further supported by some of Thomas Astruc's tweets, in which he states that all events of the show happen in the same school year.
