“ | Don't be sad, Nathalie. You know that I agreed to it that Gabriel never forced me to do anything. But he should never try to bring me back, no one should have their life stolen from them because of our mistake we made. You must continue to be happy, even though I'm no longer here. As long as there's love, it is possible Adrien will be well surrounded. He'll have you, Nathalie, and he'll have his father if Gabriel agrees to give up on his madness and on me. Adrien will have all the love he needs to be happy. | ” |
—Émilie Agreste's last recorded video before falling into her coma., "Re-creation" |
Lady Émilie Agreste (née Graham de Vanily) was a minor yet pivotal character of Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. She was the wife of the late Gabriel Agreste, the mother of Adrien Agreste, the older twin sister of Amélie Graham de Vanily, the sister-in-law of the late Colt Fathom and the maternal aunt of Félix Fathom. She was also a former actress who played the lead in the film Solitude.
Émilie was also an aristocrat from the noble Graham de Vanily family who renounced her title to marry Gabriel.
Émilie was a former Peacock Miraculous holder. It is revealed in "Representation" that she used it to create her son, with the Miraculous' formerly damaged nature being the cause of her coma. She was in Gabriel's repository, where she was kept in a glass coffin. In "Re-creation", she and Gabriel went to the afterlife after the latter sacrificed his life to heal Nathalie and create a new world.
Appearance
Physical appearance
Émilie was a thin and fair-skinned woman who greatly resembled her son. She had a small nose, a pointy chin, thin lips, upturned green eyes, thin eyebrows, and long sandy blonde hair which she kept in a side ponytail.
Civilian attire
Émilie wore a light pink long-sleeved jacket with a black stripe on the edges of the jacket over a black blouse with a pearl-amberish white stripe on the edges of the blouse and a silver five-petaled brooch shaped like a flower with five petals and a pearl. She also wore light pink business pants and black ankle-strap heels.

Personality
Émilie was stated to be kind-hearted and loving towards her family. Proven when she and Gabriel took up the use of the jewels the first time, their promise was to keep their son out of harm's way. According to Gabriel, she was stubborn and headstrong when it came to other people's safety meaning she also cared and loved other people, similar to Adrien. Gabriel also said in "Simon Says" that Émilie was "way too overly dramatic". That could also imply that, unlike her husband, Émilie didn't resort to drastic measures to fix a problem.
Since Gabriel called the use of the Peacock Miraculous "their" mistake, it's implied that Émilie knew that the jewel was damaged too showing her recklessness, rebelliousness, and determination like her son, Adrien.
Like her husband, Émilie didn't fully account for the consequences of her actions by using the jewel that put her in her condition everything spiraled into a mess causing the very people she cared and loved about to be in serious danger. And yet, like Ladybug her intuition was right as she knew what was going to happen if Gabriel fell into his obsession mentioning herself that no one else should suffer to fix their mistake. Also as well as likely knowing by the time her husband had figured it out that he could only her or their son she knew that he would have to make an impossible choice or go mad in trying to have them both so she made the choice for him so he wouldn't have too.
However, in her weakened state, she became aware and worried of her husband's obsession with the Miraculouses and that it wouldn't be easy to stop him and also she entrusted Nathalie to help him and to take care of her son, knowing that Adrien would need both of them in her absence, even leaving prerecorded video messages for both of them before falling into her coma, which also demonstrated that she was aware of her fate and accepted it, unlike her husband, in "Collusion".
And yet, just like him, she too knew so little about the Miraculouses as they didn't know back then that the jewels were under the care of the Order of the Guardians. Had they known about them or Master Fu sooner then, maybe her illness could've been cured long ago.
According to her nephew's play in "Representation", Émilie was named the heiress of the Graham de Vanily family because she was born seven seconds older than her twin sister Amélie. Being the first-born twin also made her the owner of the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings. As they grew up, they had opposite personalities; while her sister Amélie was responsible, obedient, submissive, and wanted to please her parents however she could, Émilie was described as curious, brazen, free-spirited, and adventurous in her youth. Despite the prestige of her status, she hated the limitations of the noble life and tried to escape it at every chance.
Although Émilie's unruly personality frightened her parents (her father mainly) and made them question whether they had entrusted their family's future to the right daughter, her mother believed she would mature and fall in line over time. They sent her to Paris for education and discipline. While Émilie was in Paris, she met Gabriel, and fell madly in love with him. However, her family was very furious about her relationship with this ordinary boy who wanted to be a fashion designer and forbade it, but Émilie willingly renounced her title, rank, and wealth to be together with Gabriel, showing that she did not value money and prestige to be happy and was not afraid to sacrifice for the people she loves.
However, she and Gabriel fell into their own form of elation. Shortly after they were married, the only thing they wanted to complete their happiness was a child, but their hopes were dashed when she and her sister Amélie were infertile. Even with the best medical treatments the twins received from their parents, nothing worked. Émilie really wanted to be a mother, showing her strong desire for what she wanted. This news hurt her profoundly, but in "Collusion", Émilie's secret tapes showed she finally accepted her destiny. Still, Gabriel wanted to make her happy so badly and pushed them too far.
She still cared for her twin sister and felt sorry as she was also infertile and asked Gabriel to help her and Colt to have a child with the Peacock Miraculous; this showed that she loved and cared for her sister, even though she didn't have a good relationship with her parents.
Abilities
As a civilian
Émilie was a professional actress, implying considerable skill in this field. In "Feast", after doing a duet with Plagg on the piano, Adrien mentioned that she was the only one who made him laugh in the way Plagg did, implying at some point she learned to play the piano. She also used to teach her son.
As a Miraculous holder
The Peacock Miraculous granted her enhanced physical abilities, a hand fan as her tool, and Amokization as her superpower, allowing her to manifest emotions of herself or others into physical form to create sentimonsters.
Relationships
Gabriel Agreste
Émilie loved her husband, Gabriel. As mentioned by Adrien in "Protection", he and Émilie came from different worlds. Revealed in "Representation", the two met when she arrived in Paris from London by her parents for her education and hopefully lose her rebellious nature. The two fell madly in love to the point where Émilie angered her aristocratic parents but she willingly renounced her noble rank, wealth, and family to be with him. After they wedded, all that was missing for them was a child for their happiness to be complete, but unfortunately, they couldn't due to her infertility, even with the best medical treatments after returning to her parents with him for help. In "Collusion", it's revealed by Émilie's secret tapes she finally accepted her destiny. Still, Gabriel wanted to make her happy so badly and pushed them too far.
During one of their overseas trips, they, alongside Nathalie[6], discovered the Butterfly and Peacock Miraculouses in Tibet and once they found out that the jewels gave magical powers, they agreed to use said powers under the condition they kept their son out of harm's way. In "The Collector", Gabriel told Adrien the Miraculous Spellbook was his last gift from his wife, and he told Marinette that he got the book while he and his wife were overseas. Despite knowing the Peacock Miraculous was damaged, she used its power to create Adrien out of her and Gabriel's love and placed its amok in her family's heirloom rings. Unfortunately, it slowly took its toll on her and she was kept in Gabriel's repository in a glass coffin.
According to Adrien in the webisode "Adrien's Double Life", ever since losing her, Gabriel had not been the same. Therefore, he became obsessed with obtaining Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculouses in order to use their absolute power to erase the past event that caused her condition and therefore bring her back. However, in her weakened state she became aware and worried of her husband's obsession with them and that it wouldn't be easy to stop him and also she entrusted Nathalie to help him and to take care of her son, knowing that Adrien would need both of them in her absence, even leaving prerecorded video messages to both Gabriel and Nathalie before falling into her coma, which also demonstrated that she was aware of her fate and accepted it, unlike her husband, confirmed in "Collusion".
In "Re-creation", Émilie was finally reunited with her husband in the afterlife as her death is allowed to take it's course, after Bug Noire managed to convince him to stop his obsession with bringing her back and Gabriel instead chose to use the Ultimate Miraculous Power to sacrifice his own life to heal Nathalie and while doing so, Gabriel embraced his wife before vanishing.
Adrien Agreste
Émilie had a deep love for her son, Adrien. Though the couple had trouble conceiving a child, the couple finally became pregnant when Émilie used the Peacock Miraculous to create her son Adrien with her and Gabriel's emotions of love and placed his amok in the family rings. His presence made their lives perfect; she and Gabriel even called him their little miracle and little prince. But because it was broken at the time, it slowly took its toll on Émilie, eventually putting her in a deep sleep coma. Despite this, Émilie never blamed Adrien for her condition and did not want him to suffer from the consequences of her and Gabriel's mistake of knowingly using the damaged Peacock Miraculous. In her secret tapes, her wishes were for him to be free, have control over his life, be able to make his own decisions, be protected, and more than anything, she just wanted him to be happy and create his own vision of happiness.
Like his father, Adrien was devastated about her disappearance, but unlike his dad, who pushed him away and planned to use the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to bring her back to life, he was able to move on from the tragedy while cherishing her memory. It also became the driving force for Adrien to want to make friends, go to school, and use his powers as Cat Noir to protect others from danger, as he lost his mother.
Nathalie Sancoeur
While their relationship hasn't been much explored, it is stated in "Stormy Weather 2" that Nathalie was deeply affected by Émilie's coma, becoming more saddened for her as time passes and were friends from their teenage years until her own death, shared a house with her even after getting married and went on adventures together.
In "Passion", it was revealed that Émilie left Nathalie some prerecorded messages before falling in her coma, with the former entrusting Nathalie to help her husband to stop his obsession with the Miraculouses and to care for her son, stating she knows Nathalie will take care of Adrien as a mother would, which moves her to tears and makes her determined to use the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to heal herself to be there for Adrien. Part of the reason is implied that she'd knew Nathalie loved Gabriel as well, but did not want to come between him and Émilie.
And because of her video recordings and Gabriel's betrayal in "Evolution", Nathalie decided to honor Émilie's wishes by taking care of Adrien and protect his happiness from his father, and eventually trying to stop Gabriel from using the Miraculouses in "Conformation".
Amélie Graham de Vanily
Though identical twins, Émilie and Amélie had opposite personalities growing up. While Amélie was obedient, quiet, and wanted to please her parents however she could, Émilie was more rebellious, outgoing, and hated the restrictive nobility life. Though she cut off ties with her family, she was saddened that Amélie couldn't get pregnant as well due to her own infertility, she asked Gabriel to lend the Peacock Miraculous to her and Colt, so they could have a child as well, showing she still cared for her sister.
Mr. and Mrs. Graham de Vanily
Émilie worried her aristocratic parents growing up, due to her warring personality and not taking her responsibilities for the noble family's legacy seriously. Hoping she would get her act together and for her educational purposes, they sent her to Paris, where she fell in love with Gabriel Agreste, a modest tailor at the time who went by Gabi Grassette. Her parents were frustrated at their daughter falling for someone so ordinary and gave up everything for him. Despite this, they were willing to help the couple have a child, due to her infertility.
Félix Fathom
Not much is known about her relationship with her nephew, but it's shown that Félix loved her, based on him looking at the portrait in Gabriel's office in "Gabriel Agreste", though he had been fooling her and Gabriel when he and Adrien were younger. Émilie had Gabriel loan the Peacock Miraculous for her sister and brother-in-law Colt to have a child.
Colt Fathom
In "Representation", it's revealed that Colt despised Émilie, calling her the "curious and futile sister" who gave up her rank, wealth, and family to marry Gabriel, the "inferior tailor". Despite his feelings for her, Émilie had Gabriel loan the Peacock Miraculous to him, so he and Amélie could have a child as well, leading for Colt to use its power to create Félix from his jealousy of Émilie and Gabriel having a child before he and Amélie could have Félix.
Duusu
Not much is known about Duusu's relationship with Émilie, but it was likely similar to her and Gabriel, that she also knew the reason why her former owner overused the damaged jewel. Just like Gabriel, Duusu was heartbroken and saddened by her wielder's fate. In "Representation", possibly after hearing that Émilie couldn't have a child on her own, Duusu felt sympathy towards the Agreste couple allowing them to use her power to create Adrien.

Trivia
- Thomas Astruc revealed Émilie's existence by releasing an image of her hugging Adrien as a sneak peek with the caption, "Where is she?"[7]
- The image of Émilie used as Adrien's computer background is actually a real-life photo of voice actress Tara Strong, with the top changed from magenta to blue and Émilie's face edited over Tara's face.[8]
- The writers admitted at an event that they modeled Émilie's design on Tara, whom they favor because of her work.[9]
- At Tara Strong's 2016 Q&A panel at Indy Popcon, a fan asked her if she was aware of the photo resembling her. Though she agreed, there were definite similarities, she had no knowledge of it until then.[10][11]
- There is a portrait of Émilie in Gabriel's atelier in the Agreste mansion where it resembles Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, commonly known as The Woman in Gold or The Lady in Gold.
- Behind the painting, there is a secret safe, in which Gabriel keeps the Peacock Miraculous and a booklet that reads "TIBET" in big green letters in front of a picture of her.
- The painting has hidden buttons that open the secret entrance to Hawk Moth's lair.
- In "Party Crasher", it's revealed that Émilie had a collection of old records, which Adrien keeps in his room.
- In "Gorizilla", it's revealed that because of the emotional attachment that Gabriel has to the film Solitude due to Émilie's role in it, he forbade his son from watching it, though he later changed his mind.
- A picture of Émilie is inside of the Butterfly Miraculous.
- Throughout many episodes, it's hinted that Gabriel wants the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to bring Émilie back from her coma.
- In "Evolution", Gabriel used the Rabbit Miraculous and traveled to the day he gave Émilie the Peacock Miraculous to save her from becoming sick, but he lost his chance because of his obsession with Ladybug and Cat Noir's Miraculouses.
- In "Santa Claws", it's revealed that Émilie disappeared sometime in the last year as it is Adrien's first Christmas without her.
- A future episode will track the relationship between Émilie and Gabriel.[12]
- However, it's unclear if this episode is "Representation", where Félix reveals to Marinette how his aunt and uncle met and got married.
- In the Miraculous Secrets webisode "Gabriel", Gabriel says he and Émilie used the Peacock Miraculous and if they hadn't, she "wouldn't be where [she] is now", revealing that the Miraculous is responsible for her current condition.
- It remains unknown as to why and how Émilie used the Peacock Miraculous enough to render her comatose. However in "Representation", it was revealed by Félix that Émilie was infertile and used the Peacock Miraculous to become pregnant with Adrien and his amok is in the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings.
- It was confirmed in "Evolution" that Gabriel gave her the damaged Peacock Miraculous as a gift asking if she was ready to use it and Émilie said yes, this could imply that Émilie was aware that the Miraculous was damaged and the risk it could have for her.
- On Twitter, Thomas stated that Émilie's "death" is public knowledge and there was a funeral for her.[13]
- Due to her having English origins, Émilie is the second Miraculous holder to have such origins followed by her son and nephew but preceded by Dark Grimalkin.
- Like Gilbert, she was second person to use a Miraculous but not in same place she was born in.
- She was sent to Paris for her education and discipline in her youth.
- She was born with the title of a "Lady", like her sister.
- Because of her resigned title of Lady, her father is likely a Duke, Marquess, or Earl (The British equivalent for Count) to the British nobility.
- She was seven seconds older than her twin sister and chosen to be the family's heiress because she was the first born twin and inherited the Graham de Vanily Twin Rings the day she was born.
- She was the second British character to appear in the series, following her son, Adrien.
- According to the writers' interview for a French television company called "TF1", she did not appear in "Re-creation," but her twin sister appeared instead, meaning she and Gabriel are in the afterlife.[14]
