A misconception that I really want to point out.
Yes. It's marked MAJOR for a reason because it's very important.
People assume Adrien fell in love with Marinette because she's Ladybug.
And literally he only loves her because she is Ladybug. That's not really true.
I don't think Adrien would have the same reaction towards someone else being Ladybug (like Chloe). He was very skeptic towards Chloe being Ladybug. For Marinette, he was delighted. Okay, I'll be fair because Chloe is Chloe. He's not interested in Marinette because she's Ladybug. It's more of he's interested in Ladybug because she's Marinette.
I mean...that's a very confusing statement. How could that be true?
Cat Noir: Wow. Whoever she is beneath that mask, I love that girl.
Cat Noir doesn't refer to Ladybug over here exactly, He refers to the girl under the mask. Not girls or any girl under the mask. He's referring to THAT girl. A specific girl. Theoretically, he's fallen in love with Marinette. And ONLY her. So, he wouldn't fall in love with any random girl under the idea that they're the girl under the mask because they are NOT the girl under the mask. Same goes this way, if there was someone else under that mask, chances are that he wouldn't have fallen in love with that girl. Because he doesn't love the mask. He loves the girl under the mask.
Okay. Okay. Why does he not see Marinette romantically then? The thing is he does love Marinette. It's just that he doesn't know it. If feelings were that easy, this show would have been over ages ago.
I mean, as we've established, Adrien definitely feels something for Marinette, he's just so oblivious to those feelings and he's pushing them aside because of so many obstacles.
"I've always felt like you were more than a friend to me and now I know why..."
The reason why he feels this way around Marinette is because he's already fallen in love with her. The girl under the mask, that is. It's just that he acknowledges these feelings when she's Ladybug and he doesn't acknowledge him when she's Marinette because there's just this wall they've built between both their alter-egos. It's almost impossible for them to see each other but...
"Malgré ce grand mur qui nous sépare
L’amour traverse de part en part."
"Despite this wall between us; love travels from one side to the other."
I took this from the official song. What does that mean? If the wall is the mask than the sides are the alter-egos. This just PROVES my point. Love travels from one side to the other or you could say that love travels from one alter-ego to the other.
What these lyrics mean is that despite the fact that they don't know each other's identities, despite the fact that they are stuck in a stupid lovesquare, despite that they are convinced that they're in love with one alter-ego and not the other: they still can't stop their feelings creeping up from one alter-ego to the other. They might not know it but Ladybug does theoretically love Cat Noir and Adrien theoretically loves Marinette. There are so many "Signs that Adrien loves Marinette & LB loves CN" videos on YouTube. I'm not bluffing nonsense here.
They can't stop their feelings from travelling to one side to another because they've already fallen in love with that person, they're just facing trouble seeing beyond that wall. Ladybug falling in love with CN is therefore inevitable. So is Adrien falling for Marinette. Because they already love that person, they just don't know that Person A and B are the same person. And the head betrays the heart. They can't force themselves to accept their feelings for the other side because they already love one side and the knowledge of both these alter-egos being different people is in their head, how can they accept their love for the other side as long as they think this? However, since love goes from one side to another, their heart also betrays their head, sometimes they can't help their feelings from creeping up. It's there in their actions and facial expressions (Adrien's soft looks; Ladybug's jealousy and exaggerated reactions when something happens to CN. Her recent soft looks in S3).
You could also argue that if the situation of the Origins were different. Things could've happened differently. Imagine a Reverse Love Square. Or imagine Ladynoir being head over heels for each other and Adrienette being 'just friends' or vice versa. Because at the end of the day, they're the same people, it doesn't matter which side they fall in love with first because them falling in love with each other is an inevitable outcome.
So...say again...
Adrien would only love Marinette because she's Ladybug?
Ladybug would only love Cat Noir because he's Adrien?
These statements cannot be true in any way. It's impossible for them to be true if they've already fallen in love with the person not the mask or the façade.
"Love travels from one side to another."
I'm sorry they just can't help loving the other side too because THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON. Therefore, the idea that they only love one alter-ego and not the other was always a stupid argument.
That's it from me.
